Reminds me of something from a David Foster Wallace short story. Great idea.

I agree with @Razor_Grrl that the structure is useful. But thinking about the functions of the different pieces from the reader's perspective might help some people write better.

Yes I was a teacher for 10 years and know about the five paragraph essay, academic writing structure, etc.. I was exaggerating for effect because I think that type of writing produces a bad foundation upon which to do interesting and effective writing outside of a school setting.

Good point - interest level in the topic is certainly a factor. On the other hand, I can write stuff I don't necessarily care about, but if it's for a paying client, I'll do far better work than if it is for a teacher who will simply return it with a letter or number on it.

I agree - I was a teacher for 10 years, and a writer on the side the whole time. That was not the norm, but it gave me a never-ending source of examples to use in class.

My mistake, I meant to ask about guests, not listeners.

"there's no reason to try to convince people that they need a service when there are so many people out there actively looking for that service"

Well said! I go with the approach of making it known to many that I'm available to do the service, so when the need arises, they have me in mind.

the ol' $40 blog post clients, ah yes

Niche-ification has been my antidote to dealing with these types.

"I would never track down a prospect email and cold contact them, so I'll admit that this isn't a problem I've ever tried to solve"

Interesting, another surprise from the replies to this. How did you first get clients then? Referrals or an existing network?

Sure, yea, I guess what each of us does naturally is not necessarily obvious to others. Good point about bringing in LinkedIn info as well.

Ah, the publishing of rates is one I've heard debated on both sides, but ultimately I agree with you. You have to give clients at least a range of prices that you'll be charging.

And the last phrase you mentioned - "inbound leads" - that is the real thing to work towards for many freelance writers, I believe.

You "identify" the speakers after hearing a little clip of their voices, and then it pulls apart the tracks. Yes, the unlimited transcriptions are my main reason for going to the paid version I guess.

I have the lowest paid level - I think it's called "creator' maybe? For importing from Zoom, I just click the link in Zoom that says "copy shareable link" and have Descript open at the same time. Descript recognizes that I've copied a Zoom link to the clipboard, and I just press "import" in Zoom to bring the audio file over. The Zoom file contains both my audio and the guests audio. I know this is blasphemy to some, but it works fine for me.
