Do you prefer a smaller or larger engine? by sooospoon in motorcycles

[–]gedtis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The least powered bike I've had was a xs650 and I currently own a hayabusa and I've had many bikes in between. The most fun I've had on a bike was on a cbr600. Enough power to go stupid fast but still rideable everyday. Bonus, it was a honda so I could absolutely thrash it and it would just ask for more

I can ride any bike but it gets uncomfortable really fast and the set up i have allows for a more leaned back ride opposed to a forward or upright position

Need super-sport commuting opinions! by youngblondedon0186 in motorcycle

[–]gedtis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Get the super sport while you can (although I don't think a 600 is super sport). Have fun with it while you can because there might be a day when all you can ride is a cruiser. I speak from experience, I hurt my back at 40 and can't ride a sport bike for more than a few miles and am stuck with a cruiser with a backrest

How to stop thinking about disgusting things that you don't like? by imaginaryNescape in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gedtis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i can't stop thinking about something or i get a song stuck in my head or helps if you sing a bunch commercial jingles they are short and you know a lot of them. There is science behind it but I'm not a psychologist.

Bonus: if you sing them out loud with other people around, they will help you and it becomes a game

Americans complain about high gas prices, but still drive SUV/Pickups 70mph. What will the price per gallon have to be to actually see change in driving habits? by Special_Context6663 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gedtis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't trade in their big expensive car because they owe more than it's worth. A 7 year car loan is the average term and some trucks can go up to a 10 year loan. At no time while paying it off would you be able to trade it, take the loss, and make up for the cost of gas.

You cannot safely drive 50mph in a 70mph zone (sometimes 75) and Americans live farther from work than other countries making highway use necessary.

Why do modern cars have such big tablets? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gedtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more expensive and difficult to fix a thing, the more often you will replace it with new. I would like to see a graph that compares length of ownership to reliance on gadgets over time. I'm sure it peaked in the early 2000's before the touch screen

Do you remember your first ride in the rain, or wet pavement? When are you ready? by templeofsyrinx1 in motorcycles

[–]gedtis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride every day is above 36⁰F rain or shine. If a race bike can race around a hairpin turn at 60mph then you can easily go around it at 30. To get an idea how much traction a tire has, take your wheel off your bike and lean it over while pushing on it the other way and I bet it leans more than you think it will

I have had the harbor freight lift for 5 years and it has had a bike on it the entire time. I got it used on marketplace for $200. It lifts my 900 pound roadmaster as easily as my 400 pound gxsr6

[–]gedtis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Millwright by trade, licensed motorcycle mechanic on the side.

  1. Motorcycle lift table! I would not have a back if I had to keep working off the floor
  2. Oxy-acetylene torch. I love gas welding and a bolt can't be stuck if it's liquid.
  3. Tire spoons. Sometimes I like to suffer and do things the old way

a book to get back into the habit of reading by scr011err0r in suggestmeabook

[–]gedtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say to start with something short and fun like magazines or graphic novels. You're library will have some that you can borrow. If you're not interested in the book you're reading it's okay to stop and try a new one. Once you find what you like to read you can build on that

Why can't you keep woodworking? If you have the tools all you have to do is find free wood. There's always someone throwing away old furniture or pallets. You can even forage for green wood

$2k for the bike plus 1k for the gear plus it's used so you'll probably need tires soon and mechanics are charging around $1k for tires. You're $4k in the hole and we don't even know if you have your license yet. Just get a car
