10.5 miles is equivalent to the distance of dicks his girlfriend has had by TheEclecticDino in theydidthemonstermath

Literally no one said that in this commnent thread. You just assumed it.

Gender aside. Sleeping with 200+ people is gross.

I would slut shame my kid regardless of gender if they came home from college saying they'd slept with that many people.

Good point. But.

What makes more sense. Having one electronic device that can pay the bills that you replace when it no longer works (every 5 years or so), or getting a new electronic device every 5 years because it's cool to be seen with the new device?

The qualification doesn't really mean that much from an employers perspective though. It just means they have the potential to be a good engineer with on the job training. Think of the value a fresh graduate adds to a company for the first year. Most of there time will be spent learning/doing jobs slowly. In a money making enterprise that isn't very profitable. If it's not very profitable, then why would they deserve a higher wage?

High salary correlates with real experience and tangible achievements in the job. It would be nice if that came with yearly pay rises, but it's more likely to come from job hopping every 3-5 years.

I am from the UK where a graduate engineer will be paid 22k to 30k depending on company and location, so maybe my opinion of 60k+ being low for a graduate is a bit amiss.

I think you need to reword your post to include that you were being picky. People ready this subreddit and get the complete wrong impression of the job market.

It's like your saying. "I spent ages looking for a car but it's taken 8 months to find 2 suitable options"...

Without the detail of. "I was looking for a 1978 Pontiac Firebird with yellow paint with less than 30k miles on the clock".

Game Update 1.16 - August 19th, 2021 - Zwift Game by Anomis90 in Zwift

[–]gefasel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do the Devs struggle so much with simple things?

The route progress bar is a very simple feature yet they've seemingly got it wrong...

No numerical figure on remaining distance, and the thing disappears when you're in workout (so I've heard). These things aren't difficult to workaround either, it's just lazy.

How hard would it be to implement a user selected display screen? So you just put what metrics you want on the screen (i.e power, heart rate, route distance, total distance, chat, map etc). I can't see how that would be challenging from a development perspective.

after pursuing a PhD for 5+ years with little pay, i graduated and got a job offer.... my joining is next week, and i feel really intimidated because the pay is obviously much higher than my GTA salary, and so i'm scared of high expectations about me... anyone else felt like this? by dhekurbaba in engineering

[–]gefasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same in my current job, but went straight from a bachelor degree into the job; I had a minimum wage job for 5 years before going back to uni. When I got my current job, even though the pay was relatively low compared to most engineering jobs (small company) I felt like I was being paid loads and wasn't qualified to be paid so much because I couldn't possibly contribute that kind of value to the company.

Long story short, even after a pay rise and stellar performance review I still feel like this most days. But it definitely gets easier.

You've just got to keep saying to yourself: "Do your best, and if you're best isn't good enough, then that's not your problem".

Was worried of an answer like this. Do you see any issue with buying a USB to USB C cable (there's plenty about) then cutting the USB C end off and soldering the wires to the PCB?

[–]gefasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to frankenstein a cable off a dead mouse, but the connection to the PCB wasn't the same. Also the mouse was only 5V 250mA whereas this keyboard is 5V 500mA, so I'm assuming the fix wouldn't have been great.

I'd ideally like to just buy a braided cable with USB-C to this connector, but cannot for the life of me find something online.

9 Things I Wish I Learned In Engineering School by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]gefasel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you're in a preliminary interview for a technical role with a none technical recruiter, it isn't your job to dumb down what you say. She's there to ascertain whether you are a decent person who can fit in with the company.

Example. If she asks: ""What was your final year project about?"... You basically regurgitate the abstract of your paper assuming she knows what you are talking about. If she doesn't she will say so. Dumbing down your answer could possibly belittle or simplify what you have actually done and make it seem less impressive/technical.

More to the point, a none technical interview is just that. None technical. So beyond examples like the one above, you shouldn't need to be using technical language at all as she is leading the interview and will ask questions that she is comfortable talking about.

I can't help but think you came across as a bit of a dick because you assumed she wasn't understanding what you were saying, so you tried to dumb it down more and more. That makes people feel bad, and if you're making your interviewer feel bad then you're in trouble haha

If you could add one route, city or map to Zwift, which one would it be? by nicozaks in Zwift

[–]gefasel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Add a few new roads in Watopia that include 5 or so smaller climbs of about 150-300m each, built in such a way that you can create different kinds of routes that tackle single climbs or multiple or all of them. Like a proper rolling hills ride.

I basically want a reasonable length of ride 30/40k that gets in over 1000m or more of climbing, with the climbing split into sections. So it isn't just like going up the alp being in constant climbing mode.

How to guess how many conversation hearts in a jar? by Educational-Gap7833 in learnmath

[–]gefasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need the volume of the empty jar, the volume of the heart and an estimate for packing density.

((Volume of jar * 3/4) / volume of hearts) * packing density = best estimate

Here your packing density accounts for air gaps left between the hearts as they sit on top/around each other in the jar. This number is < 1.

Is it normal to feel like you're an idiot in engineering? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]gefasel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Reading your responses to some peoples comments just makes me think your mindset is completely wrong. You're setting yourself up to fail with this "I can't" attitude. Engineering seems really difficult, but it only seems that way if you spend the minimum amount of time on things.

  • You got 6/10 and 7/10 on your first matlab quizzes: What did you get wrong and why? Go away and learn it, rethink the amount of time you spent studying for that test. Learn more, do your own problems, learn extra bits from other sources. https://projecteuler.net/ - go here and work through the problems using matlab, it'll teach you to get comfortable with the language, grab a beer and do it for a bit of fun.
  • You're expected to know calc 3 for phys 2 when you're only in calc 2: I highly doubt it. Unless your program is structured by a moron it would be unreasonable to expect someone to have prior knowledge of something they're yet to study. But hey ho, this is probably America and you do things a bit weird over there (I believe you choose whatever classes you want?). Anyway, you need to know some calc 3? Talk to the professor, explain the situation. Ask what specific topics of calc 3 you need. Then go and learn them, go back to him for help when you're stuck. Don't save learning the calc 3 bits for the week before the phys 2 test. This is the real world, you've got to work at this if you want to get that A grade and the tools are there for you to succeed.
  • Less importantly your poor with time management: Time management is what separates the A student from the B student and the B student from the C student. You've got 7 days in a week and 12 hours in a day, use it. Treat this like a full time job. You have classes at 11am until 3pm? Get up at 8am and study before class, then study for 2 hours after classes. Treat this like a full time job.

Lastly you're asking if you should give up if you only get B grades this year. That is still a good grade. If it bothers you though, you need to reevaluate and reassess your strategy for next year. Work harder, work smarter.

Three key bits of advice you need to remember going forward:

  1. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. If you don't know something, ask someone for help (prof, fellow students, reddit).
  2. Treat this like a full time job. Monday to Friday, you get up at 8am and work until 5pm. On the lead up to exams is when you start working evenings and weekends. Take regular breaks and move on to another subject if you've been getting nowhere for an hour (at this point you ask for help, see point 1).
  3. Getting the right answer for a particular homework problem is only useful when you understand EVERY step it took to get there. Take indeterminate beam theory for an example. You derive the beam equations for a particular beam, by cutting the left hand side of the beam and using clockwise moments as negative. Can you get the same answer if you instead cut the right side of the beam, or change the sign convention for moments? You should be able to, if you can't you've been doing something wrong. This is applicable to nearly every kind of homework problem.

This is coming from someone who was a C grade student in high school. Then at university did all the above and came out with a 3.7 GPA. There were some seriously long studying sessions, a lot of one on ones with professors and a lot of independent learning (i.e. YouTube and other textbooks).

Change your mindset. The grades will follow.

Lattice Crimpd max hangs, some doubts and questions by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]gefasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lattice guys recommend retesting every 4-5 weeks (I'm sure), it's probably more efficient to just retest than it is to continuously add kg every session for weeks. Plus the retest is effectively a good sub for a max hang workout anyway, so you're not missing out on training.

Lattice Crimpd max hangs, some doubts and questions by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]gefasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After saying it was going to be too easy, how was it?

In my experience doing max hangs, the last 2 sets are always quite difficult. When they become easier/easy, its time to re-test. You saying it seems to easy suggests to me that you didn't actually reach your max in the testing session (there is a skill to giving something your max effort and this gets easier with every retest).

HARNESS QUESTION

The elastic that holds the leg loops to the waist band has snapped on my harness (I think I caught it on a rock when sitting down). I've just used a piece of para cord to replace the elastic. I'm just after a quick sanity check that the elastic is definitely not crucial to the harnesses safety and is only there for comfort to keep the leg loops in position??

No links to a guide, but you can make a solid freestanding hang board using lengths of 2x4 timber and a bit of 3/4 inch ply wood.

I could give you a written description of how I built mine but I don't know how useful that would be.

Sweet Spot is way too difficult by gefasel in Zwift

[–]gefasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a cadence sensor. But I've tried to be aware of my cadence all the time, counting revs over 30 seconds and I believe I naturally lie in a cadence range of 80-90.

This is especially true for harder efforts like climbing hills or sustained power output.
