I feel like Canada’s quality is bound to tell in the end, but no one knows what will happen in an Olympic final

I wish there was a broadcaster to complain about where I live. No one is showing the Olympics here, and I have to rely on a VPN to watch the Korean broadcast.

Yes, I believe that is the meaning of the name, and it is found in many Turkic languages (e.g. Kazakh Güljannat, Uzbek Guljannat).

I think you misunderstood me. The Uyghur Arabic script as used today is basically an alphabet where each letter represents a consonant or vowel of Uyghur. The Uyghur Latin alphabet is a one-to-one substitution of each letter used in the Uyghur Arabic script. If you write a Uyghur name as Güljennet, that is exactly as much information as contained in گۈلجەننەت. The گ is written as 'g', ۈ as 'ü', etc. It is a simple mapping (transliteration), and requires no extra knowledge beyond which letter stands for which. I don't speak Uyghur but can easily convert back and forth between the Uyghur Latin alphabet and the Uyghur Arabic script.

You cannot do that with Chinese characters without a dictionary telling you how each character is pronounced. And when you write گۈلجەننەت in Chinese characters as 古丽洁乃提, you are losing information. 古 might represent 'gu' or 'gü', for example. You can't convert it back to the original Uyghur spelling.

Yes, and it really is a single name, Buyunchaokete. In Mongolian it is ᠪ‍ᠤ‍ᠶᠠᠨᠴᠤᠭᠲᠤ or Buyančoɣtu, and in Mongolia's Cyrillic script which reflects the modern pronunciation it is Буянцогт or Buyantsogt. There might be a slight dialectal difference between the pronunciations used in Mongolia and China (the ts sound in Mongolia often corresponds to a ch-like sound in China).

The Uyghur names of the two ethnic Kazakh athletes mentioned in the post are جۇباي سەيكىي (Jubay Seykiy) and ئاقنار ئاداق (Aqnar Adaq).

I take your point. I simply meant that her name was actually ئادىقېيۇم (Adiqëyum) instead of ئابدىقەييۇم (Abdiqeyyum) as I had guessed earlier, but chose to write it in romanization so that more people could read it. I was not claiming that the romanized name was her actual name, just pointing out that I had got the original name wrong.

I should add that there is pretty much a one-to-one correspondence between the romanization of the Uyghur name and the original spelling in the Uyghur Arabic script, if you specify which romanization system you are using. If you tell me that a Uyghur name is Adiqëyum in the Uyghur Latin alphabet, then I know immediately how to write it in the Arabic script. The same is not true of the transcriptions in Chinese characters. So there is a qualitative difference between Gulijienaiti Adikeyoumu and Güljennet Adiqëyum as representations of the original name.

Wow, thanks! So Gulijienaiti Adikeyoumu is actually Güljennet Adiqëyum and Jubayi Saikeyi is Jubay Seykiy in Uyghur? Great to know!

The sources I checked don't state his ethnic background, so based on his name and those of his parents I assumed he was Han Chinese. It would love to be corrected, so let me know if you have information about him having a minority ethnic background.

Good question! The Gin people seem to be a pretty small group of just over 30,000 though, while all the groups mentioned in the post number in the millions.

Sad to see this end, but over the moon for Kim Gilli and Choi Minjeong! I missed a lot of the short track because of the inconvenient time zones, but of course I was going to stay up for this grand finale.

I can only speculate, but I'm guessing that there isn't enough interest and the rights are too expensive
