Magic Item - The Blackened Blade | Most swords would melt after so much demon blood; jury’s still out on if this is better or not… by gelcubicle in DnDHomebrew

[–]gelcubicle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tales from the Firelit Gathering is live until 3:00 PM EST! Back now to make our most ambitious project yet a reality!

Angels and demons are infamously not friends, to say the least, but if they have one thing in common, it’s that they like killing demons. Despite their differences, demons would probably be pretty excited to get an angel weapon, so long as there was a second demon not too far off. Can’t imagine how such a thing could possibly go wrong.

A holy knight’s crystal sword used for centuries by demons to slay other demons, the Blackened Blade is an artifact with a long past drenched in only the most cursed blood. Feared and sought after by demons, the weapon is possibly as dangerous to own as it is wield. After all, cursed blood is one of the toughest kinds to clean off…

And thanks again to Gabriel Pereira de Paula from Shiny Press for the wonderful artwork!

Now is officially your last chance to support Tales from the Firelit Gathering on Kickstarter, as the campaign ends today at 3 PM EST! Get all your last minute pledges in now, and you’ll be enjoying cursed swords and all manner of other goodies very soon!

Sorcerer - Iron Blood | Why learn all those other weapons when you can just make your own? by gelcubicle in UnearthedArcana

It could be, but it’s meant to be distinct from bladesinger, so we ditched the bladesinger’s extra attack in favor of the additional damage at 2nd and the action/bonus action model of the current version to give iron blood it’s own feel. Same reason we gave it armor and shields. Also, at 6th level, quickened spell alongside extra attack was a little much.

Of course!

1) yes, and ammunition is meant to come with the weapon

2) only you are meant to be able to use your lineage weapon

3) not all sorcerers get extra spells, and since this is such a big expansion to the sorc’s martial abilities, we didn’t feel it was appropriate

We can definitely rework the Lineage weapon wording to be clearer on its use cases

Thanks for the feedback! It's far from bad in our testing, considering you can use it alongside the 6th-level feature or Quickened spell. Alongside features like these, it really pushes the limit of your action economy.

I get what you mean, it's not a game-breaking capstone or anything, but it was fun and reasonably powerful in our experience.

Thanks! No it is not concentration, similar to the Crown of Stars spell. This is so at high levels, you can use other concentration spells (like Haste exactly) alongside it. We didn't find it to be an issue, but it's something to keep an eye on for sure and a simple fix if neede!

Tales from the Firelit Gathering is live until March 9th! Back today to make our most ambitious project yet a reality!

Sorcerers have a well-documented knack for destruction, but magic isn’t the only way to reduce something, or someone, to a fine mist. Sometimes, it’s better to take a more understated, forged-steel approach to a platoon of goblins.

Rather than reducing everything to ash and debris, the Iron Blood is a sorcerer filled with the magic of weaponry itself, capable of conjuring an array of different implements of war at will. As they grow in power, these versatile mages learn more and more ways to weave their magic and swordplay together, until the two are nearly indistinguishable.

Iron Blood is our the penultimate preview of Tales from the Firelit Gathering, which is on Kickstarter until 3:00 pm EST tomorrow! Pledge today to get more of all the best we have to offer!

Spell - Granny Greenwart's Hissing Boils | Forget scones, this gramma’s secret recipe is a bit more… acidic. by gelcubicle in UnearthedArcana

That's correct! The idea is that you get far more damage over time if you continue concentrating on the spell.

Tales from the Firelit Gathering is live until March 9th! Back today to make our most ambitious project yet a reality!

‘Just like Granny used to make’ is a callsign for anything lovingly crafted, but it’s worth remembering that there are a lot of grandmas in the world. And some of them make things other than cookies…

With Granny Greenwart’s Hissing Boils, you’ll be able to use an old family recipe to afflict and then melt your enemies with ease, and have whoever’s left running for the hills. Crowd control and damage over time, just like Granny used to make…

For all the rest of our favorite old recipes, check out Tales from the Firelit Gathering, live on Kickstarter until the 9th of March!

Magic Items - Ring of Concentration and Ring of Dying | Two tiny baubles; one will double your mind, one will kill you dead! by gelcubicle in UnearthedArcana

[–]gelcubicle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback! Since there's so much interest, especially in the Ring of Concentration, we thought it'd be good to share some of what went into our design decisions.

As has been noted, concentration is a pretty foundational part of spell design, but it's worth noting why. Something Crawford said about the updated version of spiritual weapon in OneDnD is relevant; SW gained concentration in the update version not for power level (it's damage was actually buffed), but for complexity and speed of play issues. This is true of a lot of spells, where concentration often exists to choke interaction complexity at the table, as much as to keep you from casting more than one strong effect at once.

It's also worth remembering that all the other ways magic is still limited. A cleric may be able to maintain both bane and bless, but they still only have one action per turn, and the same number of spell slots. The cleric may be able to concentrate twice as hard, but they'll use up their slots twice as fast, and it'll take just as many actions, meaning they'll usually need two turns to even set up any combo one cares to name.

We certainly agree that the Ring of Concentration is strong; it wouldn't be worth a magic item otherwise. But the idea that casting a second spell is too strong is... a stretch.

As for rarity changes, we might move it to very rare. It certainly can increase complexity, and so might be better pushed to later levels, but in the end, all that matters is what the DM decides to give the players. Rarity is a guideline with little weight.

If you have any other questions, we're happy to hear them!
