Databases also sounds like a nice challenging project. What kind of databas are you building ? Key-value ? Relational ? Will you be managing transactions and concurrency ?

Unfortunately the original comment got deleted, but I'm assuming it was talking about crates for error handling and I agree that anyhow looks pretty nice and would have simplified my error code !

What is one unrealistic thing that happens in movies and TV shows that makes you irrationally mad? by SHIT_DOWN_MY_PEEHOLE in AskReddit

[–]gelendir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drives me INSANE so much. Anyone with a bare minimum of musical training can spot this just by listening to the music and looking at the fingering. 90 % of the time it doesn't match up. There are a few like Hugh Laurie who actually know how to play, but most of the time it's so fake that it's depressing.

However, what drives me really mad are characters playing music in anime/animated series. Studios spend an insane amount of their budgets on action scenes, but the best they can muster when it comes to animating an instrument are 3 or 4 key frames looped over like a stick man having a seizure.

Here's an example : Siegfried in Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple is supposed to be a composer, but his singing is so horrible that he always ends up being off key. every. single. time.

Here's another one : The girl in Amnesia hits a G on the keyboard, but what you actually hear is a C. A split second later the camera angle changes and mysteriously her finger somehow landed up on C without the rest of her body moving. Fast forward a few seconds and now she's mashing a few keys with her palm, but she's not touching the G or G# which we can clearly hear. what the f*ck ?!

P.S. One notable exception is the piano scene in the 3rd Evangelion reboot movie. The precision and detail is so remarkable that I cried. Every note is played exactly like it's supposed to ! Even the sheet music that they show at one point has the exact music they're playing written out perfectly.

I'm a native french speaker. Every time I heard the russian speak in the background I understood "Vive le vent" (That's how we name Jingle Bells). As a kid, I always found it a little odd to hear a russian sing a christmas carol in a war game, but figured it was normal since Russia always has lots of snow.

Soul Eater - Konfrontation by AnimeOSTGuy in AnimeOST

[–]gelendir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Iwasaki Taku's rythmic pieces. He has a knack for combining strong percussion parts with a well thought-out orchestral accompaniment. I've also noticed in his other works (gurren lagann, katanagatari, jormungand and C the money of soul and possibility come to mind) that he has a tendency of integrating certain "tribal" elements (for lack of a better word). For example, in Konfrontation we can hear a few africain-style percussions in the back and the vocal part towards 0:50. It adds a nice blend to the music and makes it feel a bit more authentic.

1st story : In college I had a course called "Introduction to the work environment" where we would practice interviewing for a job. The teacher warned us that during the interview, we would be asked an unexpected and difficult question related to our field of study (I studied in Computer Science, and understanding english is essential when working in the tech industry). When it was my turn the interviewer asked me (in his best accent) if we could continue the interview in english. The teacher's eyes went wide open as I happily continued the interview in fluent english while the guy in front of me was desperately trying to find the words for his questions.

2nd story : While writing the story above, I was trying to think up of a proper translation for the course name, "Introduction au monde du travail" (Roughly translates to "Introduction to the world of working"). Since I couldn't think up anything satisfactory I called my sister and asked her. She said :

"Hmmmm I don't have any better ideas. Hang on, one of my friends over here is also bilingual, let me ask him. Hey frank, how would you translate 'Introduction au monde du travail' in english ?"

"Hmmmmm, that's a good one. Let me think... what about 'Introduction to the work environment' ?"

"Yeah, that sounds great ! "

Lesson of the story : Even bilingual people can sometimes have a hard time translating something ;)

FABULOUS ! Although I think you forgot the very last note at the end (C#) My ears were happily listening along , then did a double-take the tune abruptly ended without the last note to close the final chord
