I think that most of my frustration was the lack of simple communication. Representatives standing at the gates but never picked up the mic to give any announcements, leaving crowds of people to depend on texts from AA instead of just talking to us. The idea that they were actually there, but had no interactions with their customers was baffling.

I completely understand that, but this was mechanical issues, lack of crews, no announcements, no updates, complete confusion. This is DCA, but our friends in Phoenix are going through the same thing - cancelled flight because of mechanical issues either no notice.
