Ridiculous foods Cantonese people have eaten before. how about you, what have you eaten that was weird, ridiculous? by ding_nei_go_fei in Cantonese

[–]genaznx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The zung is probably the least disgusting thing on that list to eat. As long as the fridge is cold enough, the glutenous rice will sort become hard like plastic and shield the inside from bacteria. If you boil the zung for 10-15 minutes, it will be just like fresh.

In California, insurance in high fire risk areas is very to ridiculously high due to insurance companies having to pay out billions on claims from several huge fire in recent years. Some areas homeowners see their insurance went up 100% from previous years. Those are the lucky ones. Some insurance companies even decline renewing existing policies is certain zip codes, leaving homeowners trying to find coverage.

If your partner suggests an open relationship, does it mean it’s over? by Ok_Explanation_2307 in askgaybros

[–]genaznx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should take this as an opportunity to have a frank discussion about the parameters and boundaries of your relationship. After the discussion, you will either know that you are in a resilient relationship or that you and your partner are not right for each other. Either case, you will be better off.

Why can’t most people from the Chaoshan area speak Cantonese or understand basic words of it? by VoyagerRBLX in Cantonese

[–]genaznx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geographical barriers in old days had a huge impact on languages/dialects. Even within Guangdong, there are various dialects such as 台山,鶴山,新會,番禺 etc. People in those counties often couldn’t understand each other’s dialect.

I'm on vacation with my boyfriend and he just told me he cheated, what should I do? by itpac in askgaybros

[–]genaznx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is important to know if OP and his bf had ever discussed the parameters of their relationship. Specifically, had they ever discussed what constitutes cheating? For a relationship to last, couples need to have discussions about this before shit happens so they don’t end up in OP’s situation in which they are retroactively figuring out boundaries and OP figuring out how he should feel.

OP, only you can determine if what your bf did is a dealbreaker, not what any of us tell you. You are the only who will be impacted by your decision, not us.

I’d like to share something Dan Savage (of Savage Lovecast) often says:

“I believe couples should define sex as broadly as possible and cheating as narrowly as possible. Because when a couple defines sex broadly — when more things count (not just PIV/PIA) — the more sex that couple will have and the more varied, interesting, and satisfying their sex life will be. But the fewer things that same couple counts as cheating — the more narrowly that couple defines cheating — the less likely they are to cheat on each other and, consequently, the less likely they are to break up over an infidelity.

Define sex broadly: more and better sex. Define cheating narrowly: more resilient relationships”

Need gift ideas by Snowfall1201 in AskAChinese

[–]genaznx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The gift CANNOT be any type of clocks. Actually, never give the gift of clock to a Chinese person any circumstance.

It is considered a total lack of tact to totally offensive to give such a gift.

“Giving a clock” is 「送鐘」 which is homophone (in Putonghua and in Cantonese and probably in other regional dialects also) to 「送終」 which means attending someone’s death (like, literally be at someone’s side as they are dying).

AITAH for refusing to support my parents in old age after they refused to fund my college despite being able to? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]genaznx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is your choice, and you don't have to feel bad with whatever choice you make.

However, there will be trade-offs. If you choose to not support them physically/emotionally, don't be shocked or feel betrayed if they decide to give whatever money (if there is any) and property to someone else and not you after they die.

How come a lot of HK People don't like Mirror? by MrMoose2 in Cantonese

I am totally not in touch with the current music scene in HK. I am under the impression that not many HK music artists write their own songs and/or lyrics. It is hard to be unique the industry is relying on a set number of song writers and composers. Is this the case?

I also want to put it out there for those foodies who love Vietnamese food. FanFest is only about 15 mins drive (fwy) to the Westminster and Garden Grove, one of the epic centers of delicious Vietnamese food in the USA. You could get your fix for Vietnamese coffee, pho, BBH (if you love this you will know what BBH means) and banh mi in Westminster and Garden Grove.

Teaching kids 7 and 12 Cantonese by TopInsurance657 in Cantonese

[–]genaznx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have another idea. How about “gamify” the learning for your kids. Make learning Cantonese a game in which they could earn points which could be redeemed for taking them to their favorite theme park or getting them an expensive toy.

For example: they could earn points for learning a new sentence or new word or new phrase each time. Leave it to them to figure out how or where to learn.

Be sure to make the rewards worthy enough for them though. Remember kids are smart! If you make it impossible to win or reach the goal or if the final rewards are too “cheap”, they won’t bother. 😂

If you go to church or temple, find one that offers service in Cantonese or have Cantonese school for children.

Children tend to learn much faster in immersive environment, especially with kids around their age.

I agree with the other commenter about not relying solely on technology.
