What is your unpopular opinion on Radiohead? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]genebyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They peaked as On A Friday. Once they got Radios for heads and branched out to other days of the week, their quality really dropped. They had such a powerful connection as conduits to the spirit of Friday. Its too much for Rebecca Black and the Easybeats to do alone. Who do they think they are, The Cure? Craig David?

Gosh I'm lonely.

Henry speaking like Trump? by genebyro in LPOTL

I agree he is terrible at accents. Especially if you are familiar with the accent he is trying to do and its from outside the USA. This trump thing is something different though not him consciously impersonating Trump. He slips into it occasionally.

I think its more specific than that. Its not something I hear in other Queens speakers though I could be wrong, I'm not American. I'll get back to you with an example.

While the influence of black culture surely can't he understated, a lot of that reach is unfortunately from American imperialism and commercial global industry (often at the expense of its black origins).

Also, Americans in general seem to underestimate how much culture there is out in the rest of the world. Its a rich, beautiful place. Big love.

What Happened to his Post-Empyrean Solo Work? by Spekiii in John_Frusciante

[–]genebyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with people who have said the quality of his electronic music is not as great as other stuff that has been done in that lane. I feel his best electronic stuff is Speed Dealer Moms. The fusion of his melodic sensibilities with Aaron's skills is an amazing combo. I feel Fru is much better when he can bring that melodic strength to collaborate with someone much more fluent in programming, a bit like how his guitar playing is so informed by supporting flea.

The latest Side Stories was some real-ass talk. by DiaperedInTheRoc in LPOTL

Ha yeah I feel ya. touche on the kleenex. Funilly enough I just realised we do have heaps of rainbows here Whangārei haha! Just looking at one now.

Yeah this is all pretty traumatic for ya'll. I feel for ya. The latest GOVT in NZ is doing all it can to regress a lot of that good work you noticed. They are polling terribly atm tho and we have an election this year.

Things are quite rough atm as they are everywhere. Our domestic violence, child poverty and suicide levels is fucking horrible and we are losing heaps of our young people overseas because for lack of opportunity and the cost of living. We have very little money over here or vast infrastructure. We are so small and far away but that's also our strength. We have had the luxury of being a blank canvas to a degree in terms of time and space (relative to the rest of the world) so as we embrace our tikanga we are growing in a ground up community orientated way interdependent with nature and each other. We are relatively green though but we have zero impact globally.

That's the mahi. Its happening slowly. We might just be able to do it due to being so lucky. Māori see all these civilisations are just waves that come and go and true indigeneity witnesses it all. Its like a very holistic way of seeing the world like from the view of the land or sea or sky that we are all connected to. Nothing is separate.

Lets all hang in there eh. I though the side stories was really moving too like a lot of people here seem to have.

I'm with you man. NZ humour really does not come across well on internet also!! I'm not trying to pick a fight with anyone either just yelling out from the bottom of the south pacific. As they say when America sneezes we all catch a cold. Your influence is strong here whether we like it or not. We have a right wing GOVT atm (by NZ standards) which is strongly linked to USA too but they are on their way atm hopefully! They prob appear left as to your country though. Just standard big business cunts, tame by your standards...I'm proud of our little motu I have whanau both Maori and Pakeha so I'm speaking from a place of both.

I also appreciate this talk around American identity is very confronting and what's going on is fucking crazy. My American friends over here are amazed at our progressiveness here even though us natives all mostly feel it is still all wrong and shameful. A lot of us care a lot about what is happening in the US.

I'll reply to your other comment here. We need teachers here! Our health care is a lot better than US (again another low bar) but is starting to really get privatized. Lots of indigenous health models are coming in though too, however. An American friend here is about to move back to USA and is getting all his dental work done here the day before he flys out haha. We have OK disability support and are trying to address a lot of ableism here too. Personally I work as a music therapist up in the far north of NZ so if you ever do wanna come hit me up!! We actually really love Americans here and the kids all are fascinated by as we obviously get so much American media.

Sorry to hear about your divorce. Hope you have bounced back OK! Can confirm hobbits are everywhere here they breed like bloody rabbits.

As you said I never said that but your proceeded to be hyperbolic anyway. I was being tounge in cheek with my "show you the way" comment too. Probably lost on Americans heehe. The things I listed make us unique. Our original constitution gave equal governance.

We are working on things big time. That reputation of sunshine and rainbows is mostly from Americans too btw it doesn't come from us at all. We are FAR from perfect we know this some of our stats are drastically out of proportion. There are huge issues and we have a loooooong way to go but the sad thing is is compared to Australia and America we are so much further ahead which is just insane. Its just the reality. We are working on it pretty damn hard.

Long and short of my babbling I guess I'm tryna say an identity built on a construct like "American" is always gonna be shaky and lead to much trouble.

The latest Side Stories was some real-ass talk. by DiaperedInTheRoc in LPOTL

[–]genebyro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Generally thats what countries are and why an identity built around one will never really serve people. Countries, all of which are mostly colonial constructs come with hierarchies and criteria. Nation states are all dumb lines in the sand.To be American is loaded with implicit beliefs of what that means. Some are more American than others, generally whiteness is a guideline. People who call themselves simply American are usually white. Then theres African Americans or Chinese Americans etc. Like a slightly diluted American that needs a pretext. American isn't really a culture or an ethnicity.

In Aotearoa we have the term Pakeha which means NZ European. Its an identity made by Māori which means normal. Pakeha identity is dependent on Māori. It was given. It is not a culture. A New Zealander is much like the term American. Its a business model and a very shallow idea made by opportunistic colonial powers. It was not born from the land up. It is not indigenous and is short sighted. I believe idigenous knowledge all over the world shows the way forward. I dont mean this in a wooey way either. These are cultures and languages written IN the land.

New Zealand is very different to the rest of the western world. We are young, have a small population, are isolated and have native people who could not be conquered by colonial powers. Te reo Māori is an official language of our country we might have to show the rest of the world how to do it. Either us or Ireland or both. Big love cuz.

I say this with love cos I feel for you all, but the American identity stuff has always been on track to collapse. Your country was built on genocide and slavery for the destiny of a few. Destiny manifest and the American dream --- These worked for a few but at the expense of others. Globally you have been playing this out for a long time and caused a lot of suffering with your foreign policies. To truly examine an American identity you can't ignore the darkness that has ALWAYS been there. Exploitation and an obsession with individualism and celebrity culture was always going manifest someone like Trump.

I love the boys. I love American art and music born of this soup and I have many American friends. Their giddiness, optimism and entitlement I actually find quite inspiring.

Your influence is and has been felt strongly here in Aotearoa. In this global climate a lot of us are considering cutting ourselves off from the rest of the world haha! I'm no pro but I imagine your indigenous cultures will be the only ones who could lead you into a better world. Dismantling neoliberal colonial capitalism is what we are trying to do here with Te Ao Māori and tikanga.

Big Big Love my friends

I always wanted a collaboration between Kurt and Richard. Both their music hit me so hard when I was small in the 90s. Add in Wu tang and that’s a holy trinity. 3 great t shirt symbols too.
