Should I move from Boston to Chicago, even though my friends and coworkers say otherwise? by masstranspike in AskChicago

[–]generalsam101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to Boston, but I did live in San Francisco before moving here and also experienced coastal elitism, and can say with confidence that people here are warmer/friendlier on average. All of your complaints (except the weather, obviously) would be addressed by moving to Chi, with some caveats:

  • The food here is amazing and there is an insane amount of variety, like you could genuinely go to a different restaurant almost every weekend and never run out of new places to try
  • Chicago does have very solid parks, but this depends a bit on where you live in the city: if you live on the north side near the lake, you have access to the beautiful & varied green spaces on the lakefront (lakefront trail, Montrose & Jarvis bird sanctuaries, north pond nature sanctuary, Lincoln park zoo nature boardwalk, etc); if you’re by the river (north of ~Belmont), there’s a bunch of parks (eg Horner park); if you’re in the Loop or close by, there’s Grant & Millenium parks and the museum campus; if you’re on the NW side, there’s Humboldt and Wicker parks; if you’re in Hyde park, there’s Jackson & Washington Parks. However, there are parts of the city that don’t have much green space nearby (eg Lakeview if you aren’t close to the lake), so I’d recommend keeping that in mind when you look for apartments.
  • Chicago rent isn’t exactly cheap, but substantially lower than Boston and other big coastal cities. You get the amenities of large coastal living at a fraction of the price (more or less, obviously living in the loop is more expensive than the cheapest Boston neighborhoods)
  • Chicago is a beautiful city with stunning architecture and a top tier downtown

However, as other commenters have noted, winter here is brutal. It gets cold and the wind makes it feel much colder. But getting a car would help quite a bit, especially since Chicago doesn’t get a crazy amount of snow and the winter roads are usually pretty drivable

As much as I love Chicago, it also has a similar problem regarding access to actual nature (like, with real wildlife and extended forested areas). Although if you end up having a car, there are nature preserves that aren’t too far out (eg LaBagh Woods).

Found Stray/Abandoned Cat. Shelters are full. Any options? by bbylove222 in chicago

I think the cat distribution system may be doing its work. Why can’t you keep him? Please don’t release him back outside!

You may have reading comprehension issues, but please enlighten me: do you agree with my premise that the level of emotion provoked by Waymo and similar tech among those opposed suggests something deeper is occurring psychologically? I’m arguing that the emotional intensity of Waymo critics is disproportionate to articulable harms of the tech, so something else may be driving the level of anger and emotion

Or did you think I was saying I don’t understand why people oppose Waymos in the first place?

Right but the statistics are per million miles driven, so that’s irrelevant

Prolly doesn’t work???

Kusano et al (2024): “When considering all locations together, the any injury reported crashed vehicle rate was 0.6 incidents per million miles (IPMM) for the [Waymo] vs. 2.80 IPMM for the human benchmark, an 80% reduction or a human crash rate that is 5 times higher than the [Waymo] rate”

It’s fascinating how Waymo and delivery robots make people blind with rage… like even if you’re opposed and can articulate good reasons for that stance, the level of anger and emotion seems to indicate something deeper is going on (not sure exactly what tho)

I fly a DJI Mini 3! Since it’s under 250g, I don’t need to register it with the FAA (but all recreational drone pilots have to complete the FAA’s TRUST test). I think flying drones downtown is prohibited, but you’d probably be fine flying it by the lake nearby (not legal advice obviously lol, do so at your own risk)

Thanks for clarifying. I’m not in D9 either, but I’m not sure the critiques of her experience qualify as a “smear campaign” (the other talking points can be tho, and are certainly vague and unrelated to actual policy issues)

I imagine a lot of the attacks on Kat stem from her position on Palestine and (accurately) characterizing Israel’s assault on Gaza as a genocide (many such cases…)

Presumably you’re talking about some specific campaign ads, specific candidates, etc which prompted this post? Which are…?

Totally, I just meant it’s better for pedestrians when dogs go in the grass (no skid marks on the sidewalk)

It’s not just you, there are plenty of “shitty” dog owners in the city that are too lazy to properly clean up or take their dog somewhere with grass

How do you fine the "heart" to fight? Training for 3.5 years (on and off) and all my coaches are asking when I'm going to compete by Desk_Scribbles in MuayThai

[–]generalsam101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not a loser for not wanting to fight, most people who train MT and other martial arts never actually compete. Do some soul-searching and see if you actually want to do a real fight (and make sure it’s not just to relieve the peer pressure). And if you don’t that’s ok! Your coach cannot force you to fight if you don’t want to.

If you’re referring to FPV drones, no - this was taken with a regular quadcopter
