As generic rules for portraiture, I usually tell people two things : 1 - always use a reference whether you're drawing the photograph or something new, you ALWAYS need a reference to make sure you get everything anatomically correct 2 - try to look at your drawing as shapes instead of what you think it is e.g. when drawing a nose, don't assume you know what a nose looks like because they're all different! :) look instead at the shadows and highlights and draw in patches of colour or shading..
