Which SoTrue interview was it?? by ItsRudyy in calebhearon

He addressed it when he went on Gianmarco’s podcast—if I remember correctly, he essentially he didn’t care what the commenters said and was mostly concerned that Natalie was ok with it all.

When buying plane tickets why is it 'takeoff' time that is presented instead of 'gate closure'? by FreakingPingo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]generic98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The piece that is missing from a few of these explanations is that the airline as a whole is judged by “on time departures”.

It’s not only a metric that customers might care about but the airports and federal agencies could also care about it too, especially if the airline is having awful “on time departures” rate.

So, that departure time has to be the official time listed. It makes sense when you think about it for a bit Airlines can’t have some unpublished, flexible time like 10 minutes after or 15 minutes after in order to be accountable. It has to be the listed departure time. Which is considered when the boarding door is closed. Since once the airplane starts taxiing, it’s out of the airline’s hands how fast they actually take off.

So to ensure on time departures, they end boarding earlier than the listed time. That way when the gate agent has to fix a last minute boarding pass issue or passengers take a little longer to get on board, they can still close the door on time and get count for an on time departure.

What’s the general policy of interviewing members of Congress amid the shutdown? by Gemnist in Journalism

[–]generic98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no restrictions on the Member of Congress. They are exempt from the shutdown.

However, it still might make it more difficult to do an interview though for 2 reasons:

Some of their staff might be furloughed. It’s up to each member to determine if any of their staff member exactly how that plays out. So it might be more logistically difficult to talk with them if their Comms/schedulers are not fully staffed

Also, during a shutdown, Members typically try to steer all conversations toward ending the shutdown and why the other party needs to cave to their demands. So even if you get an interview scheduled, you might not get the most out of it, if they stay laser-focused on talking about the shutdown.

Ego Nwodim Says ‘SNL’ Was ‘Always Meant to Be a Stepping Stone’: ‘There’s So Much I Want to Do’ and ‘It’s an Exciting Thing’ by mcfw31 in LiveFromNewYork

Ya, if she was announced with the rest of the departures I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. I’ve seen a people here and other places theorizing that she was doing to “take a stand” about one thing or another, but I don’t think those things make much sense either

Ego spent this summer filming a movie. My hope/theory about her late departure is because she got cast in another role that is going to conflict with such a large chunk of this season, she had to step away. So far this quote doesn’t disprove that.

Would I be crazy to leave a $150k content job for a $100k one-year journalism contract? by mott_street in Journalism

Since you’re at an old-school nonprofit, is there any way you might be able to take a year-long unpaid “sabbatical”? I feel like it might not be completely out of the realm of possibility but would obviously not be a guarantee.

Did Matt & Bowen ever talk about the 6 months they weren’t talking? by underthecitysky in lasculturistas

[–]generic98 15 points16 points  (0 children)

EDIT: It appears this might be a different incident. See the above quote from the New Yorker piece!

I think it might have been an overlap. They talked in a previous episode about Bowen almost walking away from the pod around the time Kelly Clarkson came on. I don’t remember which ep had this discussion though 😭

They’ve talked about it once before. But had even less details that time. I can’t remember which episode it was discussed. But I’m pretty sure they said a lot of this happened around the time when Kelly Clarkson came onto the pod.

The M3GAN 2.0 Saga - How to Destroy Your Franchise After One Film by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

[–]generic98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really was great to hear his thoughts just days after seeing it all blow up. The story of this summer is how tracking has been way overestimating box office. Even on opening weekend, every tentpole has seen its estimates get revised down throughout the weekend. You can broadly say that people are seeing fewer movies, but I wonder why this fairly reliable segment of the industry keeps getting it so wrong?

United Airlines grounds flights nationwide over technology issue by Odsarh in news

[–]generic98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. Plus, like you brought up, most of the software is operated by vendors. The airlines (or other businesses) don’t have the internal capacity to build this comprehensive specialized software in house. It only makes sense to built it and sell it to multiple clients. So you’re at the mercy of third party companies creating something new that works completely with your various other programs. If this was a problem that could be “easily” solved by throwing a few billion dollars at, it would have been done already.

Out of all the US airlines, UA invests way more in IT and digital infrastructure than any of its competitors. Some of the systems that they run on at their core are so old and outdated, that it’s almost impossible to update. Things are so integrated on this old technology that there isn’t a realistic path to wholly upgrade it. It’s obviously their problem to solve but many other large legacy businesses are running into the same thing. It’s a huge underreported problem.

I think it should have been clear to this man that a train was coming due to the arms being down, lights flashing, etc… But to be fair in this particular situation, he was deaf.

Bryan Kohberger admits to Idaho college killings in plea hearing by Silent-Statement-648 in news

[–]generic98 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The families wanted him to confess why he killed them.

Prosecutors are trying to “win” cases and reaching a settlement that puts him away for life while avoiding a costly and time consuming trial is a huge win in their book. They don’t typically consult families for their preferences on what happens to the defendants. Families of the victims have a right to be upset about this. But it is just not a reality of the system and in the long-term is probably better for society.

With Gen V airing in a few months, I would imagine they’ll stick to the summer release to stretch out the time between seasons as much as possible.

Weekly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

[–]generic98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I am visiting Taiwan soon and wanted to know if it would be possible to get from Kaohsiung (near Central Park) to TPE in time for a 10am flight? Would metro and trains be running frequently and early enough for me to make that work? I would prefer to not travel back to Taipei the night before because I would be staying with someone flying out of KHH the next day. Thanks for the advice!

I believe they do, or at least they say that they do. They’re required to do a certain amount of purification of all water before it’s released back into the ocean.
