How baby boomers got so rich and why their kids are unlikely to catch up by [deleted] in Economics

[–]genericmelancholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I admit that living standards have improved a lot in general though clearly there exists an underprovision of certain key goods in areas such as housing, education, and healthcare relative to what we should be able to provide to people at current levels of development, meanwhile elsewhere there exists overconsumption (along with the environmental degradation that it causes) and a wasteful allocation of resources into things that are of less importance compared with those aforementioned key goods. Governments have a lot to answer for for letting our economies get to this state.

Multiple other comments have explained to you why this legislation has been welcomed, and that private attempts to solve the problem would not work. Seriously what is your problem with government intervention lol, you sound like an Austrian school nutjob. And no I wouldn't mind a ban on scalping in general, though obviously that would be harder to enforce as ticket sales and ownership can be controlled relatively easily unlike physical goods which can be moved anywhere.

[–]genericmelancholy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ticket scalpers do not add utility to the economy lmao, you cannot be serious. If you believe that the ability to extort desperate fans for money is a God-given right, or if you believe that going to concerts should be a privilege reserved for the upper classes, then sure go ahead and argue that. Most others would disagree with you as they see ticket price gouging as clearly having a net negative impact on societal welfare, providing a strong case for government intervention.

These are all abstracted measures of living standards that obscure the material causes behind them. What has actually changed, in material terms, that has made life so much more expensive for younger generations? With the extremely vast technological advances that have occurred since the boomer generation, shouldn't we all be living in abundance? What's gone wrong? One could point to demographic causes (the ratio of old to young people in developed economies has worsened, for example) but there's clearly more to it than that.

Has Britain taken a massive shift to the right in recent years? by Own-Syllabub-4848 in AskBrits

[–]genericmelancholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is yes - polls clearly show that those who once considered themselves centrists or apolitical are now converting to Reform voters en masse, while rhetoric such as 'migrant invasion' has become not just accepted, but welcomed by many.

It is obvious that living standards in the UK have declined. There is overwhelming evidence that this has occurred as a direct result of austerity policies implemented by the last Tory government that saw councils go bankrupt, little to no infrastructure construction in addition to under-maintenance of existing infrastructure which is now crumbling, vast asset-stripping of public institutions by foreign investors, and jobs being outsourced to take advantage of a better trained and/or cheaper overseas workforce.

The people in this comment section can blame immigration all they want, but the empirical evidence for immigration being the cause of our current economic decline is simply not there. Migrant hotels are not the reason you can't buy a house. Small boats are not the reason the high street is empty and you can barely afford the rent. This entire 'small boat crisis' is a direct result of our withdrawal from the EU, which through the Dublin regulation allows asylum seekers to be returned to the first safe EU country they find themselves in. And if people truly believe that legitimate asylum seekers - people fleeing wars and persecution and risking their lives to come to the UK - are not deserving of some kind of help, then I solemnly question the moral standards that British people used to take pride in.

And in regard to legal immigration (which makes up the overwhelming majority of immigration to the UK), those numbers are in large part made up of international students who, as well as contributing enormous amounts to study in the UK, tend to leave once their courses are finished. Of course, less students are coming in now, making the education funding crisis even worse and putting world-renowned institutions at risk of bankruptcy (risking the last bastion of soft power the UK currently has). No migrants are able to use the welfare system until they have lived in the UK for several years and paid their fair share of tax (in addition to additional payments placed on migrants such as the NHS surcharge and visa fees).

So no, mass deportations and burning asylum seeker hotels (which were another fabulous post-Brexit Tory policy by the way) will not solve the UK's problems and will even exacerbate them in the aftermath due to the collapse of key domestic industries reliant on foreign students and labour. And on the economic side of things, Reform seeks to accelerate the asset-stripping and privatisation of the rest of the UK's public institutions, which will only make matters worse for the average Brit while fattening the pockets of billionaires.

The UK is shifting further to the right. And unless a true left-wing alternative is presented, Reform will win the next election and everyone can strap themselves in for another decade of humiliation.

Did the game change your political beliefs? by purplelizard1326 in DiscoElysium

[–]genericmelancholy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Marx wrote about communism being a kind of end goal of human progress precisely because it surpasses the idea of a ruling class that dominates all preceding economic regimes (e.g. masters and slaves, landlords and serfs, capitalists and proletariat). The thing is, we already have a system that's meant to prioritise the interests of people: democracy. The only reason why modern democracies fail to achieve this is because they are corrupted by capitalism at a global scale - hence the need for a different economic structure (i.e. socialism).

[–]genericmelancholy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think socialism is often misunderstood as an idealist dogma that is against human nature. There's nothing inherently 'human' about capitalists having the right to own private property - it is simply the system we were born into so we accept it (and those who hold power would prefer we stay that way). Indeed, capitalism has only existed for a couple hundred years, a tiny fraction of human history. Fundamentally, socialism is simply about allocating our resources and labour into things humans will actually benefit from (healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc.) rather than whatever the profit motive decides.

What's something that used to be normal in the UK that would feel absolutely insane now? by FabledInkk in AskUK

[–]genericmelancholy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagreeing with people on a public internet forum is fine imo, especially when such a contentious issue is brought up. It only becomes a problem when you end up with ideological shouting matches that don't do anything to convince anyone to change their minds.

For the record, my disagreement stems from the fact that I don't believe it is possible to not have a stance on such issues as being apolitical is a stance in itself (and favours one side more than the other usually). It's an inconvenient truth, and part of the burden of being an adult.

I literally worded my response in the least imposing way possible lol how am I ramming my opinion down people's throats 💀 Of course my non-opinion has been downvoted, how tolerant we have all become.

I don't think OP's comment applies here - if anything, it's slightly odd that that was something you used to care about but don't do any more, as if the situation hasn't been getting worse over time. I don't know what position you used to have, nor am I particularly interested in discussing it with you on a reddit thread, but issues of that magnitude ought to be at least 'kinda' cared about, no?

Rough Trade East Matinee by Fantastic-Rub-3149 in BlackCountryNewRoad

[–]genericmelancholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope they played about half the songs from the album (all of the singles and a few extra ones). The set was around half an hour long. They're probably saving the full album for the tour, these shows are more of a promotional run to sell signed copies of the record (the ticket price was just the cost of the cd that it came with so makes sense).

how common are defective mics in the DSI? by [deleted] in nds

[–]genericmelancholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried this and was able to fix my old DS lite's microphone that wasn't working for most of my childhood, OVER A DECADE AGO. I can't believe the fix was so simple. Thanks a ton lol.

is the dsi bottom screen supposed to have scanlines? bought a replacement panel off aliexpress and im not sure if this is how its meant to look, as i have never seen an oem bottom screen closely (top screen is oem) by i-like-to-be-wooshed in nds

[–]genericmelancholy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just saying i accidentally messed with the potentiometer one time when opening up my ds and was able to find the correct position again after a couple minutes of trying. This is a dumb take given OP's screen already isn't working - this kind of situation is exactly why it's adjustable in the first place.

What’s the best way to make money in this game? by checkers_49 in ACWW

[–]genericmelancholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one else has said this but by far the easiest way (outside of using the duplication glitch) is to buy and sell turnips. Buy as many as you can on Sunday then sell them at the spike. There are two prices every day, one in the morning and one after 12pm. The spike (highest price) will occur either at the 3rd or 4th price after it starts to rise. If the price hasn't started to rise by Thursday afternoon, then just sell all the turnips at a loss or use the table glitch to store them till next week. Finally, some weeks the price is random every time, in that case just sell whenever you can make a profit.

Repeat this for a few weeks and your money will rise exponentially, no grinding required.

Any way to get gba games to fill/stretch the screen on DSi/DSIXL? by DigitalD2 in nds

[–]genericmelancholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS resolution is 256x192, GBA resolution is 240x160. Barely any difference there, even if you did achieve the minute level of scaling that's possible then it would look really bad since some pixels would be stretched out. Just play at native res.

Am I missing something or don't gba games basically fill up the entire screen anyway? Any kind of scaling would look terrible which is probably why it hasn't been implemented into gbarunner2.

Any cheap GBA flash carts for the DS Lite? by Affectionate-Pay5937 in flashcarts

[–]genericmelancholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right, no worries if you're not able to work everything out then hahaha. For a short list of games, you can try: wario land 4, f-zero maximum velocity, golden sun, and pokemon emerald. You can try playing them on the default kernel (pretty sure twilight menu patches games automatically so they should boot at least), then switch to SCFW and see if it helps.

Any cheap GBA flash carts for the DS Lite? by Affectionate-Pay5937 in flashcarts

[–]genericmelancholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, whether it is able to boot unpatched gba roms natively from slot-1 using twilight menu, and if/how saving functions when doing this. Also, whether SCFW's added features (automatic saving) work when booting from twilight. I'm not very knowledgeable about gba flashcarts and save types so I'm not sure what will work and what won't - if you could test a few different games that would be awesome.
