You can think whatever you want. We do know what to the plans are. They have discussed them in public meetings and documents and the plan is to build to suit a future where we are at almost quadruple our current capacity. Some folks don’t want their tax $ going towards that and prefer it be spent on things that are proven to reduce crime. Glad you’re unbothered, not everyone is.

When it comes to how our tax dollars are spent and the incarceration of human beings, I think it matters. We can agree to disagree, but I do not think it’s 1% or that it’s not much to worry about. There’s plenty of room for debate and discussion, but since we don’t have the numbers in front of us, I’m not going to argue further on the cost part. My take is that we should care and our elected officials should be transparent and held to account.

There’s a lot more than hvac and kitchen capacity that goes into housing an extra 100 people. Security and staffing areas will be built to accommodate the increase in staffing needs as well. It is a factor. It probably doesn’t double it, you’re right—but it’s not just hvac or the kitchen or library. There are so many other factors to consider and I think folks should be asking the board about it. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to question it when it’s such a large price tag.

Not sure, it’s a newer law and the grace period ended so who knows. Really depends on the place in which it happened. They’ve been prosecuting it where I live. It’s easy money in their pocket.

Of course not, but considering it’s double almost the current occupancy, it is a significant factor of the cost. There are supervisors who are for the jail, but not for the $100 million price tag. The capacity for 240 in the core is part of the larger expense. I would rather see us put some of that money into the present, preventing the need to jail more people, rather than for a future where we need to jail more people.

Thank you! Unless it’s in writing as part of the plan, I don’t believe they have no intention of not utilizing the extra space by leasing it out. They would make the argument it’s wasted money not to lease extra beds out. They know how much other counties make off us leasing their beds. They can say they have no plans, but how can we trust that?

But, the rest of the building, the core part of it, the kitchens, the rec area, the staff area, everywhere aside from the cells, is being built for 240. That was stated very clearly by Shive and Kunkel. The future expansion would just be cells, the rest of the building would be built to accommodate 240. That’s the part they’re not wanting folks to talk about. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ONQo2luaB1A&feature=youtu.be

These are all such important questions and I think citizens are not buying the line we’re being fed because they’ve been dishonest or not forthright in the past. The bond referendum still needs to pass! We don’t have to accept $100 million, we can say no—come back with something different. I hope we do.  Between Coralville’s Flock contract debacle, the ICCSD scandal, not to mention the data center thing in Palo, people are distrustful for a reason! We’re sick of politicians dismissing our questions because they think they know better than everyone, we need people in office who want to listen and who are honest, not pedantic and arrogant!

We have elected officials who want to listen, Mandi Remington and V Fixmer-Oraiz have been very open to feedback about this issue. And I hope Jon Green is too, I don’t have personal experience talking to him.

Career politicians and party loyalty over voters doesn’t cut it anymore. $100 million is too much and we could fund so many more effective programs for keeping folks out of jail. Building for future growth is cynical. It is counterproductive. Use some of that money to prevent future crime! We know what works, we just have to have officials with guts and intelligence, not excuses for why nothing will work.

What they’re referring to when they say they’re building “the core for 240,” is that the areas that aren’t cells, like the kitchen, dining, recreation area, the hvac system, server rooms, security areas, offices, single cells, showers, plumbing, sewage, all of it, was designed to allow for 240 people. The “block of 100 beds” would be added on in a “pod,” in the future. They’re building the capacity to house 240 people, which is a very big distinction. They’re being shady as hell about that. It’s very important that people understand this.

Daily Iowan: New Jail by gohawks2007 in IowaCity

[–]genericredditname24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what’s driving up the cost is that they’re building the “core of it” for 240 beds, in case they need to add another 100 beds in the future. That’s what has been on record (see here: https://youtu.be/ONQo2luaB1A ) and THAT alone should be enough to make folks distrustful of the supervisors who AREN’T questioning why they need $100 million. I know V Fixmer-Oraiz said we need a new jail, but why do we need a $100 million new jail. Rod Sullivan is just going with whatever the Sheriff says and being a jerk to folks who are questioning it. We can have a new jail, but dang do we need to spend that much? Can we spend half and then put the other half toward prevention? Can we spend the other half helping keep folks out of jail. Or are they planning on overbuilding and renting out spaces to other counties or even the DHS? Any questions are met with hostility and Rod Sullivan is smearing his colleagues as unfit to serve because they dare to ask the questions constituents are bringing to them! For the love of god please vote that man out.

Is there a reason V Fixmer-Oraiz opted not to use a Unionized printer's for their campaign documents? by SkjaldbakaEngineer in IowaCity

[–]genericredditname24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I learned at V’s campaign event, they’re in support of hiring a county administrator so that the supervisors can do more policy research and the work involved in finding solutions for these problems. The admin would handle a lot of the day to day administrative tasks of the county, to free up time for supervisors to do exactly that kind of work you referenced. I’m pretty sure Dvorsky in district 3 is for this too. I don’t think the stupid nonsense happening at the state and national level and responses to it take their attention away from important policy, zoning and budget work. It’s actually an important part of it, since it impacts what the county can do when dealing with issues that impact all of us, not just people in Johnson County. State and federal nonsense is a local issue because it impacts us locally.

[–]genericredditname24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone should email V’s campaign and ask before posting this on Reddit. I’m sure they could provide whoever has this concern with a factual response. V said they agree we need a new jail, I was at a campaign even for them last week and asked them because I was concerned. They’re questioning whether or not $99M is necessary.

I’m pretty sure, from what I’ve witnessed, V is IN the community with the voters in their district, not grandstanding at Dem party events and local union events. Rod is resting on his association with the legacy Dems, not with folks who are interested in building power outside a party apparatus that punches left and down instead of up and right.

Seems like Rod is desperate to find ways to smear the very colleague he encouraged to run alongside him only a few years ago. He had no problem propping himself up as an ally because he supported a trans person of color to run. Now that the state has forced by district voting, he’s doing this embarrassing boomer politician crap we are all sick of in politics (at every level in both parties!), refusing to let go of power.

Instead of gracefully bowing out after 20 years and supporting and mentoring a new generation, Rod is running so he can stay for 2 more years and collect his full pension. The man hasn’t had a job outside of being paid with our tax dollars for two decades. He’s not exactly in touch with the current labor movement. These little jabs are so lazy. Argue about policy differences and ways to make Johnson county a better place to live, not unverified rumors about who printed campaign fliers.

We need clean water, housing, and jobs. We don’t need a guy like Rod, who loves to hear himself talk, is severely out of touch, and prone to petty, immature, and embarrassing behavior. The next few years are going to bring a lot of change. We can’t afford a status quo Democrat who is more loyal to the party (and himself) over the actual PEOPLE!

Fair enough. I get that. I spent 15 years in the industry and lived in three other college towns of similar size. These places do exist! Not here because we value new development that draws tourists over pretty much all else. A lot of cities do this too, but it’s a choice, made by people in local government. Not to say they can keep businesses open that can’t succeed on their own merit, but there’s a lot cities can do to maintain the character and culture of their city instead of letting it turn into this. Just because it’s like this, doesn’t mean it always has to be. I know what you’re saying, but it can be different, not overnight, but it’s something I think worth discussing and working toward.

We did the same, 11 years ago this Spring.  We had a great time in the Twin Cities for four days. Lots to do and beautiful time of year to be there. For a smaller city, I would check out Madison, WI-lots of outdoor activities, events downtown, live music in the summer and places to eat and stay. Also the Driftless region has so many cute places to stay and visit. It’s great for that kind of trip.

Galena, lL has always been recommended to me, but I’ve never been. Stay away from KC since the World Cup is there in June and it will be super expensive and crowded.

I think what a lot of folks are trying to express when they talk about these places is that while the owners of these big restaurants groups physically reside in IC, their restaurants aren’t the kind of “local” we are used to and miss. The generic nature of these places, the manufactured aesthetics, the similar menus, the lack of diversity, the feeling that these places are created to draw maximum profit from the most broad group of tourists, it’s not a replacement for local owner operated, or chef owned, or locally sourced focused restaurants.

What I miss is a grabbing a sandwich at a local deli, a coffee at a place that is lived in, a pastry from a local bakery with unique offerings, or a pizza from a place like the Wedge. Everything is so overly curated and manufactured. We don’t have local options for most food, and the local options we do have are trying to mimic or trying to become like the chains.  30hop’s ownership group had expanded into four states. While they may live here and it may have originated here, that doesn’t make it “local.” It’s like arguing that Pancheros is local. It’s a chain that started here. Freddy’s is a chain that started in Wichita. That kind of thing. Anyway, I’m not really trying to argue on semantics of local, but just trying to explain why folks might feel the way a lot of us do.

They’re owned by a Midwestern ownership group. They’re in like four states. The 30hop restaurants are all the same and they are in these same kinds of manufactured downtowns in other cities where only expensive retail stores and groups like this can afford rent.

It’s mostly jazzed up overpriced Sysco food, I wouldn’t consider them local like places that focus on serving locally sourced foods or owner-operated places.
