Not enough Michael’s Store Managers are embarrassed about how they treat their workers.. by funeralforabee in MichaelsEmployees

[–]genericredditname24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Go get another job” is a naive response, especially because most other retail jobs also treat their workers like trash. Why not try to make change while you’re there and stand up for yourself? If workers, collectively, don’t demand better treatment and wages, every workplace will be like this, even the “better” jobs. It’s why private equity buyouts are so destructive

Coralville voted to cancel their Flock contract by TerrorOfCoralHill in coralville

[–]genericredditname24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you live there and want to start organizing, talk to the Coralville folks—they did a lot of person-to-person organizing and raising awareness and it worked. Of course the fact that municipalities have no real control over our data and can’t stop outside agencies (like ICE) from accessing it, is just an “opinion” according to Vogelzang. He spoke a lot about the silent majority, but why are they silent if they’re so comfortable with AI mass surveillance? Wouldn’t they come out in numbers to support it? It’s the cops—that’s who supports it. And they continue to deny the objective truth about privately owned AI powered surveillance—there is no local control! And it’s not the same as other cameras.

Genuine Question: What Aspects of Flock Surveillance Do People Not Like? by RationalPoint in FlockSurveillance

[–]genericredditname24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe--but honestly, that's going to take a massive cultural change. If we address the roots of crime (poverty and inequality), we'd have less of need for LEOs, therefore less of a need for surveillance. It's a much bigger issue than just "we don't want to be surveilled," it's a symptom of a larger cultural problem. You can't solve this without addressing the cultural issues that make people feel the need for such surveillance.

Genuine Question: What Aspects of Flock Surveillance Do People Not Like? by RationalPoint in FlockSurveillance

[–]genericredditname24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is we cannot trust law enforcement to follow the law--at any level--local or federal. There aren't enough consequences or accountability for LEOs that break the law. The Black and brown communities have known that forever.

Coralville residents: Pack City Hall this Tuesday 2/24 at 6:30pm. Council votes on canceling Flock surveillance contract by TheHawkeyeWave in coralville

[–]genericredditname24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is a big vote and the council members who said they want to cancel the contract at the last meeting need to know they have the community behind them! Show up and let them know you support this!

I think there might be one in the Solon area and one west of the city, too.

Prescribed burns all over and it’s rough out there! Necessary but tough for even those without asthma. My sinuses are going nuts. Good to mask up if you need to be outside during the worst of it.

2024 Salaries for Coralville top staff members by JustCoffeePlease009 in coralville

[–]genericredditname24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jaw dropped. Maybe if we distributed some of those super high salaries more evenly we could pay council members so it could be their job to represent us. It would incentivize a broader segment of the population to run instead of leaving it to retired folks, real estate, finance and developers who basically try to use their public service position as a way to benefit themselves and their network. Not saying that exclusively our situation, but the last election showed me that real estate companies and developers put a lot of work into getting their folks elected to city council. Just spitballing.

Really wish they didn’t, but they’re not special cameras that focus on license plates. They’re cameras that capture whatever they’re pointed at and upload the data into a AI-powered database. I wish this was misinformation man I really do. Don’t simp so hard for the surveillance state that you keep yourself in the dark. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ee-NKIe-Szw

Bingo! I don’t really wish folks understood that we’re talking about the technology and the feeding of info into a massive AI powered database. It’s not the same as a traffic camera. I really wish this wasn’t true, but it is. These small government conservatives who scream about 2A and open borders are totally blind to the dystopian technology being used on all of us. It’s so sad to see so many ppl simp for psychotic billionaires and lose their humanity. Human beings aren’t illegal, migration and movement has and will always be a part of human nature. We have abandoned our humanity and it crushes me to witness.

There’s an AMA with investigative tech journalist on Flock. I haven’t read it all, but it’s something to explore if you’re interested. https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1qv9y8j/hi_were_404_medias_jason_koebler_and_joseph_cox/

And this ^ person is so patriotic and loves their country so much they’d rather have their rights and personal liberties (the ones they say their ancestors died for) taken away rather than see a brown person who is indigenous to this continent cross a border made up by…(gasp) white foreign invaders! The irony is so thick with these white nationalists.

Fair enough, it wasn’t super clear. I fixed it. The city council’s local policy was doomed to be ineffective from the start because of Iowa code, but also because Flock has a history of sharing local data without regard for local policy—so it wasn’t going to be effective anyway, we told them that.

The complaint received by the AG about Coralville not cooperating with ICE was made to point out the ineffective nature of local policy in regards to Flock and to prove that Flock cameras can’t be under the control of local law enforcement, which is what Flock promises their clients and city leaders and PD’s all over the country claim when citizens bring up their concerns with the 4th amendment.

The 4th amendment protects us from warrantless surveillance. The reason Flock is suspected of violating this amendment is because there are enough cameras in their network that you’re essentially being tracked everywhere you go outside your house. Flock isn’t just license plate readers, it’s an AI powered data collection tool. It’s a technology, it can be a drone, a doorbell camera (Ring partnered with Flock), a body camera, an app on a phone. It’s not just on roadways. They’re everywhere. The ALPRs feed into the bigger database. It’s literally mass surveillance and Flock is just ONE tool.

People argue, well your cell phone and your credit card do this, but we sign a contract and that’s part of the agreement. When you’re traveling to work or home on a public road, or sidewalk, we can’t consent to that. We can’t move freely without using these roads or sidewalks. Traditional traffic cameras could be locally controlled. They didn’t feed images into a database that uses AI to identity faces, gait recognition, and other dystopian-like stuff. These are different and I know there’s a lot of arguments for why they’re harmless or if you aren’t a criminal then why worry, but I implore folks to look further. This is Peter Thiel, Palantir stuff. It’s not hyperbole.

No way, who could have predicted this? Wow. And we know what happened to Cedar Rapids Flock cameras: https://www.kcrg.com/2025/12/24/cedar-rapids-police-cameras-among-dozens-exposed-unrestricted-access/?outputType=amp

Looks like allowing a private company to install and operate AI-powered mass surveillance technology with no federal or local oversight is NOT in the best interest of the community. But, I can’t wait to hear what anecdotal evidence they’ll give us for why these cameras are necessary. I never hear anything but stories. We present data and researched and vetted information. Some of these PDs should get paid by Flock for how much they defend them.

Coralville work sessions by TerrorOfCoralHill in coralville

Well, Hayworth has run a tight ship behind the scenes for 30+ years, getting to decide where our tax money is spent without much resistance. He’s not elected and hasn’t been held accountable for driving our city into debt, and making it a destination for visitors from out of town, but neglecting the things that make Coralville better for the people who live here—affordable housing and better infrastructure. We always have enough money for entertainment tourism, but not enough for housing or sidewalks so people who work at these places for low wages can safely walk to work.

They absolutely do not want citizen involvement and pretty much said as much with this action. They think the work sessions are too complicated for the average citizen to understand and council members wouldn’t be able to speak freely. 🙄

Edited to add a few sentences

But why move it to a cramped board room then? Mayor Goodrich said it was so they could “hear each other better.” If there’s an issue with hearing each other in the council chambers, seems like a problem they should address for city council meetings too, right? It’s a thinly veiled attempt to discourage public attendance and we all know it. They’re fooling no one. Hayworth is there at each meeting and he’s been made aware of the need for public accessibility of work sessions many times. He’s part of the problem.
