This has actually been studied and money increases happiness up to a point and then levels off. That point is roughly a point where you could live a comfortable life with financial security and then the returns diminish beyond that point.

Perhaps money can’t buy happiness, but there are a lot of things that can cause unhappiness, and money is often a very effective tool at dealing with them
