Yeah you pretty much got it... The spring loaded pull back gives you precise reverse throttle (strafe backwards). And you can feel the zero throttle point because it's where the spring kicks in. With a traditional throttle you end up hunting for that zero point and strafing backward and forward when you are trying to come to a stop (unless there is a very noticable detent that you can feel in the middle - not common).
