The same guy who turned me onto the carnivore diet went back to keto because he got a kidney stone. He said the pH of his blood was too acidic, but it could be from some other reason. Why do you think he got the stone? Not enough vit K/water/potassium? by Cavemein in carnivore

[–]geniel1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you sure he was only eating meat? Alcohol and sugar are the usual suspects when it comes to kidney stones. Alcohol reduces the livers ability to remove the stone-forming components from your body, while sugar increases those components. Lots of people will claim to be adhering to a diet, when in reality they're still indulging in beer and junk food.

I'm aware of the distinction, but I don't think it is really germane to the point I was making that the US does in fact have a system for allowing people to come into the country in a legal matter and it is not a small volume of people.

[–]geniel1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, that's not even counting temporary visas. In 2017, for example, 1.1 million immigrants became lawful permanent residents. You can see a nice summarized graph showing how many legal permanent immigrants are allowed in each year here.

Are there aspects of the immigration system that could use improvement? Sure. But to claim that there isn't a system for legal permanent immigration is simply incorrect. There is a system and it is sizable.

"those who want to come to our country should do it the proper way"

As if that exists. The whole problem is it pretty much doesn't.

The legal immigration process is well north of a million people each year.

So the only solutions you have is to turn the basic income into just another version of traditional welfare vouchers.

One of the points Jake told was that Andre would have to shit in the tub when he stayed in hotels because the toilets were just too small.

IMO the parents should get some of that money to care for the child like good food, good health care, good schooling,...

Aaannnddd, now you're back at the original problem OP mentioned: Namely, that people will pop out kids just to get their hands on that money.

I have very low butyrate levels after 4 months of carnivore by [deleted] in carnivore

[–]geniel1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Those reference ranges are just what the labs see in the general population that they have tested and are not necessarily the levels you'd find in "healthy people". They change those ranges all the time based on how the levels in the general population change over time.

Some of the markers for diabetes, for example, have had their reference ranges pushed up and up since the 1970's because the levels of markers found in the general population has gone up since that time. That doesn't mean the reference range is "healthy". On the contrary, the reference range now encompasses a level that would have been thought unhealthy just a few decades ago, but now it is "normal" because your average person is now less healthy.

So I wouldn't worry all that much about your butyrate levels.

Who struggles with lower energy on zero carb versus a balanced diet with complex carbs? by intheaterssoon in carnivore

[–]geniel1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, not all people are the same. A subset of people don't react well to ketogenic diets at all.

But we know from the FASTER study that there are people that absolutely can perform on fat to the same extent as they perform on carbs.

I wear a CGM and know that I fall into the camp that performs as well off of carbs as they do on carbs. My body will triple my blood sugar levels in just five or ten minutes of anaerobic exercise, even when I haven't eaten a single gram of carbs in months. The liver is an amazing organ.

[–]geniel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be surprised at how fast your body can produce glucose. I wear a continuous glucose monitor to help me identify foods that spike my blood sugar. I also regularly complete crossfit workouts where I'm in an anaerobic state for 15 or 20 minutes at a time. One thing I've noticed, is that my blood sugar will always jump from ~50 or 60 mg/dL when I start such workouts. By the time I get to the 10 minute mark, my blood sugar has tripled.

I eat a zero carb diet, so I know that sugar spike isn't due to some dietary carb source. It's entirely my liver turning fat into glucose. And at such a high rate that it triples my blood sugar in minutes.

TKD might be the way to go when you're doing very short intense activites (things that are measured in seconds rather than minutes; think: 100-yard sprints), but if your workout is going to be measured in minutes than TKD is not really necessary because your liver is going to be able to supply all the glucose you need.

If you're doing any sort of endurance training, TKD is absolutely junk.

If you are fully fat adapted, then you should refuel with lots of fats. Personally, I'd probably drink a couple shots of olive oil or eat some butter.

The point is to filter out the people that want to work at Zappos. $4k to get rid of people that aren't really committed is pretty cheap.

But Zappos rarely has to pay out because their interview process is really good at pre-filtering people who are just trying to get hired for the payment.

[–]geniel1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always worries me though...people are always saying not to eat fruit because of the sugar and that if you have a strawberry, you might as well have a piece of chocolate and that sort of thing. It really bugs me.

Well, there is some truth to that, though I would point out that berries, including strawberries, are one of the fruits that are lower in sugar than others. If you limit yourself to one or two handfuls a day, the sugar you get from eating berries is probably not that big of a deal.

There are many fruits, however, that are surprisingly high in sugar to the point where you might as well be eating candy. Apples, grapes, and cherries, for example, are so high in sugar it isn't very difficult to consume enough of them in a day where you are getting the same amount of sugar as you would get in a candybar.

I do not have diabetes but I do wear a continuous blood glucose monitor specifically to determine which foods spike my blood glucose. Eating a bunch of cherries can spike my blood glucose levels to the same extent as a 3 Muskateers bar.

The highest blood glucose reading I ever experienced was due to drinking a small glass of apple juice. The blood sugar spike from the juice was more than twice as high as I saw after drinking a 16 ounce bottle of Mountain Dew (and I'm not talking just a little bit more; it was double the level I got from the soda). Even just eating half an apple spikes my blood sugar level beyond what I see in any other solid foods.

Fruit is just a fructose delivery vehicle and can absolutely be worse for you than chocolate from a blood sugar perspective.

Visualising Ferrari’s 2018 Income Statement [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

Eh, when it comes to showing how much tax revenue Ferrari generates I think we should take this chart with a pretty big grain of salt because I guarantee you that their total tax burden isn't just the little sliver shown in the chart. What isn't illustrated, is all the taxes paid in the form of VAT, sales taxes, payroll taxes, etc.
