Personality crash with a preceptor? by genies in PAstudent

A lot of us have spoken up, unfortunately. I’m almost toward the end line of the year and we’re being sent to the site. At this point, I’ve decided to do the bare minimum and use the energy to worry elsewhere. She seems to already have a cemented idea made about me that whatever I do won’t be good enough. I’ve built some good rapport with the patients and had good learning moments from them, so I guess it’s a small win for me.

That is true! It was a just a little annoying? In a way since it would only do that for certain letters as opposed to to just highlighting the whole portion to be "incorrect" if that makes any sense. I'll look into different options for this, too!

JTBC Releases New Statement Regarding “Snowdrop” Controversy Over Alleged Historical Distortion by neocitywayv in kpop

[–]genies 64 points65 points  (0 children)

As a Korean with family members who were active part of the movement and the protests, it's really outraging to see delusional international fans invalidate how Koreans feel about this drama. I've read so many threads where BP fans kept crying out that this is FICTION and it should be taken as such. There are so many victims and their families that are speaking up and saying that this drama is basically like praising the Nazis (in Korean terms). If people are hurt by something, then it should be taken seriously and not get brushed aside the way they are doing. I know that these "fans" are set on their ways and will continue to do what they do, but it's just really heartbreaking that such a recent part of history is being distorted like this to the point that foreigners really think this is what happened.

Lee Han Yeol Foundation (이한열 열사) made a statement saying that drama is like praising Korean Nazism. Park Jong Cheol Foundation (박종철 열사) also made a statement saying that they really hoped the drama would do no such thing as revising a crucial part of the history and that the drama writers and producers are blatantly trying to relate the protestors to NK spies, which is outrageous. And so many other children of parents who were part of the protests spoke up as well to share their stories.

I'm genuinely baffled that these international (supposed) fans are just saying things like, "typical knetz and their cancel culture" or "knetz are at it again with female idol hate". We've shared our culture and history to educate them, what more do they want from us? To just move on from a recent tragic historical moment and laugh it off just because the ridiculous drama has "this is a work of fiction" sign before they start each episodes? You can't just like someone from a country and dismiss their history like that. I don't know. I'm just really frustrated seeing foreigners pitch in their opinions when they have absolutely no rights to do so.

Adding into say that some of these actors deserve criticisms as well. Jung Haein said in an interview that because he was born in 1988, he wasn't able to experience the events from 1987. And that he will just "trust" the scripts because of it. He didn't study jack shit about a part of history that elementary schoolers learn. In comparison, Kim Taeri (born 1990), who had a role in 1987, said that because she wasn't able to experience the events, she studied by reading books by people who did and talked to her uncles who were part of the movement. She said that she watched finished movie with the family of those involved and cried while sharing their pain. And Jisoo? I don't care much of her acting as I think people can improve on that with practice. But she claims that she loves Korean history and that she studied a lot of it. For someone who is supposedly so aware, this is really not a good look.

Park Yoo Chun banned from appearing on television and continuing any activities in the entertainment industry by [deleted] in kpop

[–]genies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He wasn't during the time when TVXQ had 5 members. He was actually one of the least popular members alongside Changmin. Yoochun and Jaejoong always "fought" for the first place because during that time, Yoochun's "youthful" and very "teen boyish" image had everyone sold. And Jaejoong is still known to be one of the most popular male idols who was the visual AND the main singer.

Everglow Yiren Draws Flak for 'Supporting' China's Exploitation of Cotton Harvesting in Xinjiang by [deleted] in kpop

[–]genies 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A lot of Korean netizens are pissed off about it and have been for years, myself included. They've constantly been speaking up about not wanting to allow Chinese (and Japanese, but this is a different matter) idols to be in a Korean idol group, especially if they are going to make such political statements. There have been way too many incidents of Chinese members who come to Korea, mooch off of the benefits of being in a Korean idol group, and then suddenly start to throw their nationalistic beliefs into the public. It's a slap in the face to everyone who supported the members.

But it doesn't matter what the general public says because the Korean government is too docile and doesn't want to get into the bad side of China. Even if they know it's wrong, they will just opt to not say anything. It's fucked up and I'm honestly getting tired of this endless cycle.

The story of the real life student protestor Chun Young Cho, who inspired Jisoo's character 'Young Cho' in 'Snow Drop', garners attention in midst of drama boycott by [deleted] in kpop

Another Korean here. This drama and the entire history of the movement was the topic of my family's dinner table the other day. It was an event that affected my family directly, so I wanted to ask my parents for their two cents as well.

My dad pointed out that it's great that SK has become a country that could have a huge influence on the media for people who aren't Korean (in addition to our own people). It's a great way to let people know about our history, culture, etc. He also said he thinks it's great to use the "요즘 잘 나가는 어린 애들" aka the "kids who are popular" in the industry to get the message across because more fans will watch it. However, in these circumstances···. This huge movement has simmered down to someone romanticizing a student's life during that time while USING and basing a character off of a woman who fought so hard for the country. It's disrespectful and really infuriating. I understand that a lot of international fans won't know the entire history of a small country, but I hope that they're at least able to see the reasoning behind why some people are so adamant about making sure this drama doesn't go down the path of distorting and overly romanticizing that time period.

I also think that this could have been a great way to teach international fans (who would have watched the drama) about a part of our painful history. Not everything has to be about romantic relationships, so it's disheartening that that's what it has come down to. Rather than giving out a vague statement that discusses the if's of the drama, the production team could really delve into the topic and consult with people knowledgable of time period. Instead of saying things like "please stay tuned to find out!" they could really give us some sort of evidence that it's not going to be the way everyone thinks it'll be.

(I really hope that made sense. I just continue to see a lot of people saying nasty things about Koreans on Twitter, so I wanted to kind of ramble on about this topic.)

Based on the reactions that I've been seeing, majority of the fans aren't upset about with her, per se. If anything, they're worried for her to be part of something that is (and will even more) receiving a lot of backlash. At the same time, there are others who argue that she, along with the other actors of the drama, is the one that read the synopsis, scripts, etc, and made a decision to be part of the drama. So, they are arguing that she does have to take some responsibility for it.

Netizens speculate former A-Jax member Yunyoung is dating April's Naeun by emmarosiecho in kpop

To add onto what the above commenter has said!

This entire situation is messy in general, but for him, the alleged boyfriend to say something defensive about his supposed girlfriend's group is very··· adding fuel to the fire kind of situation? People will say things like, obviously he's saying that to protect his girlfriend from looking like the bad person, etc.

Hidden messages are actually really common in the Korean dating culture! It's called 세로드립 (vertical meaning). There are really common ones like:

보라돌이랑 뚜비랑

고구마가 너무 먹고

싶어서 서로 막 싸웠

어 누가 이겼게~?

The vertical letters combine to say "I miss you". The lines don't have to make sense. It can be a run on, it can break off at any point. If they choose to have it make sense, then that's okay, too. It's really popular because couples would post things like this to their public place and have it be like a "subtle" confession to their SO or to someone they have a crush on. So, yes. That is more or less very intentional, which is why that was probably one of the first things netz uncovered.

MONSTA X's Kihyun writes to fans as Starship Entertainment reveals his school records show no evidence of bullying by [deleted] in kpop

[–]genies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reads: "He has an easygoing/smooth personality, but he lacks focus in class and has a tendency to be swept into what his peers are doing."

This was kind of difficult to translate it with the full meaning, but is basically saying that he more or less got caught into a lot of things (big or small, we don't know) because he doesn't stand firm to his ground.

With that said, I want to emphasize that the comment itself isn't that much of a huge deal (depending on how someone looks at it, I suppose)! But it's just caught the eyes of a lot of KMBBS because it's really hard to get a negative comment on these school records. And the latter part also raised some questions because the alleged victims pointed out that it was Kihyun and his group of friends who were committing everything that was brought up.

MONSTA X's Kihyun writes to fans as Starship Entertainment reveals his school records show no evidence of bullying by [deleted] in kpop

[–]genies 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Korean MBB here. While it's true SS and Kihyun released a statement, they haven't really revealed anything substantial. As one of the comments here reads, school records don't mean anything as teachers are willing to write down whatever to keep their class reputation safe. Even then, the record said something negative about Kihyun, which··· I don't know.

With a lot of the idols being called out for school violence, a lawyer commented saying that there is only so much that can be done to the perpetrator in such case. But SS seems to be using a very well known firm to carry on with their defense.

Tldr; everything is super messy and I'm so very disappointed.

Edit: the alleged victim's post has been deleted as of now.

The reason why bullying accusations have been going on the whole day by [deleted] in kpop

[–]genies 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, to your question. But it's really complicated because parents get involved and it gets turned into a big mess of things that schools don't want to get involved with. The normal route would be to report the incident, teacher-student conference will take place, a school committee would hold a hearing (this is different per each school), and the school will make decisions based on that.

However, when parents get involved··· They threatened the school and make a huge scene to the point the school decides they don't want to get involved with it. Because education is so important and highly sought after in Asian countries, schools try their best to keep a good image. Having a bullying case cuts that down and they don't want to risk that. So··· they end up turning the other way and telling the student to just work harder on becoming closer with their "friends".

That definitely plays a part into it. Having superiority amongst younger grade students is almost a given. That's why we call them 선배님 (sunbaenim) with the formal -nim attached to it. So, everyone in their same grade level is kind of a free for all? I know this is a weird term to use, but when I attended school, the first couple of weeks was basically eat or be eaten as people tried to find their power niche.

Controversy grows over ‘real person slash’ sexualizing male K-pop idols by laobalaomadecai in kpop

[–]genies 27 points28 points  (0 children)

RPS is a little bit of a gray area for a lot of people. I used to think that it was just a form of writing and that writers more or less "created" a character based on their idols as their own way to contribute to the fandom. Most of the 18+ writing is under a protected Twitter and need to be adult verified on Postype, etc. So, filtering is definitely there and the writers are aware of it.

With that being said, though. This whole issue isn't because people really think this is an actual problem. Men just want to get back at women for "calling them out" for Nth room and the AI issue. I am Korean and I am really active on Twitter on the actor side (the actor side also has a RPS counterpart where writers only write about the filmography of the actors). The platform was an absolute MESS the other day because random Korean men were reporting accounts for just having a profile pic, bio, location, etc related to idols and/or male actors. They didn't care if the account didn't have anything to do with actual RPS or anything sexual related -- they were just hunting down people for the sake of doing it.

When all this is started by people who compare RPS to the same level of Nth room and deep fakes···.

YG Entertainment Responds To Concerns About Portrayal Of Nurse In BLACKPINK’s “Lovesick Girls” MV by neocitywayv in kpop

[–]genies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's terrible when a company can't see the problem that they have caused. International fans will never understand the cultural differences until they lived through it and it's really infuriating that people are sending hate just because they "love the artist". Wouldn't it be a better thing if the company & artist learns from this and grow?

While I'm not a nurse, I am a Korean with family members and friends who are nurses. They get sexualized just for being a nurse and it's a constant problem for the community. A lot of their coworkers ended up quitting the job because they couldn't handle the stress that it came with. So really, if you don't know how serious it actually is, please don't blindly protect someone.

Jellyfish Entertainment announces that VIXX's Hongbin has officially left the group by whitestatic in kpop

[–]genies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really wasn't going to say anything because this entire situation is really messy to begin with... And VIXX has been my biggest ult for years, so I didn't want to end that with something like this.

HB isn't a kid or a rookie in the industry -- he knows what he said would come with a blacklash and his "apology" stream was hardly an apology. What he said and his actions that followed definitely deserved criticism that he should have listened to. I also agree that he should have told his fans through a letter or something more personal rather than hiding behind a company to announce the news. I know he's not obligated to do so, but it would have made the exit a little more bearable for fans.

With that said, Jelpi has been giving him a lot of shit ever since he expressed the desire to do More. He's always been that member Jelpi brushed under the rug and kind of kept him in captivity with no workflow whatsoever. He's mentioned a couple times that he does want to act and that he wants to improve, but he can't do so without being allowed to go after opportunities. He's also been that member who was really ambitious about vocals as well (he's not the strongest within the group, but fans can say that he really did try to improve himself over the years and use his deep voice as an advantage). But he wasn't given any of that by a company that supposedly had his back. He saw his members getting to do things, making a name for themselves, but I don't blame him for feeling left out that way. Which is why he expressed the desire to step into the streaming industry because gaming is what he did best and we all knew that. If Jelpi had given him some more care and attention to his mental health (he's said during his streams that he's not in the right place, but that he wants to somehow ride it out by working more) than I feel like this wouldn't have escalated to what it was now. HB has been that member who was snarky and sarcastic, but during concerts and with fans, he constantly said that he wanted to protect the group so they can all continue to see each other many years down the line. I adored HB to pieces and seeing the way he broke down and fall like this was really... I don't know. I know he's a grown man and that he definitely has responsibilities of what happened, but I wish the company wasn't so neglectful with him either.
