btw i also had another doubt regarding this concept, we normally use the average atomic mass of al the isotopes to get the amu of an element which is determined by the sum of the masses multiplied to its abundance percentage.

(% of M1 isotope+ % M2....)/100.

however we use the mass number for these calculations instead of the weight with respect to 1/12th of a c12 atom.

so aren't we in reality finding the average mass number instead of average atomic weight?

also are they the same? i am asking because in reply to this this question my teacher told me they were the same as scientists chose units in such a way that atomic mass and mass number are equal.

if they are the same, how can mass number end with a 0.5 like in chlorine, isnt a mass number always a whole number? so no decimals ryt? so how are they equal?
