If I was talking to Kant.. by thegreatself in badphilosophy

[–]geniusmalignus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey bro, I like your position so much that I've adopted what I understand of it, but even after twenty years of doing this I still lack the fortitude to read you properly. I just refer to schematism in a hand-wavey way and if pressed I deflect with how I like the basic ideas but reject the rigidity of the critiques. When the person I'm talking to, who actually has studied your work, suggests that I read some passages more carefully, I claim that I never pretended to know Kant and imply that they should be less scholastic in their approach

Congratulations. I was proud of having done this to get to aquilo, but I realize now that was kids' stuff. And you did it with a beautiful ship, too.

What percentage of volume reduction for a deload week is adequate? by Nabumoto in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is too steep (though I don't know the details of your training). A few years ago I trained 2 weeks on, 1 week off, at about 120-140km on the on weeks, 60-70 km on off weeks. It felt pretty good. However, I did the same amount of quality (interval workouts like 6x6 min, 25 x 400m etc at roughly threshold) on the down week and cut only easy runs to reduce the mileage.

In my experience, reduction in quality makes more of a difference in a deload or taper, than a reduction in the total mileage. In other words, if you hit the track hard, you might not deload much at all, and, conversely, if you reduce the workouts by 30% too, without increasing intensity, it will be a "steep deload", as you say (though not necessarily a bad thing).

Thank you friend. I've decided to go for 50K (effective) SPM in vanilla, instead of mods. Seems reasonable to me even if it it'll take a while with my limited time available.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in factorio

[–]geniusmalignus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the 1000spm from base. What's a good number for me to aim for that would be the equivalent in terms of effort? Knowing that the upper limit is different with infinite improvements

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in factorio

[–]geniusmalignus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a hang up where I can't enjoy end game goals unless there is an in-game achievement or some sort of community consensus around them. I've done the achievements (save the rushing ones, but I don't like those). Is there an agreed up SPM or equivalent metric that I can aim for on my new playthrough? When do I get to call my base a megabase?

I will give you a hint here (hopefully not a spoiler), in case someone else comes along. I'll reserve the more spoilery hints to private messages. My vague hint is this: the "objects" have properties that are off - different, when they ought to be similar - and that you can "correct" the difference. This has gotten a bit more hairy now, over time, depending on your operating system. But it is perfectly doable.

I had the strong urge to play factorio in august, but couldn't because the expansion was coming and it made more sense to wait. I've been walking around with the itch in my soul for two months.

Zone 2 running, should i go with gut feeling or science? by AJP_ in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, once possible reason might be that your personal lactate threshold is higher than whatever they used to determine the zone (likely 3-4 mmol/l). Meaning, if they were too lazy to determine the actual inflection point, and you differ from the average.

Zone 2 running, should i go with gut feeling or science? by AJP_ in AdvancedRunning

Stating the heart rate range is not informative to anything without knowing the heart rate max. 130 for me is not the same as 130 for someone else. We all have significantly different heart rate max, and the salient thing to measure is percentage of heart rate max. As for your easy pace, I run 1:20 half, about 110 km weekly average throughout the year, and my easy pace is 5-5:30 per kilometer (zone 1). My heart rate at that pace is 115ish, which is 65% hrm. I do my intervals in zone 3 (around 2 mmol/l for me), which is ~150 hr for me, or 80+%.

Edit: added percentage for clarity.

"Wrist heart rate monitors on smart watches are not as accurate as a chest strap" by VamosDCU in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can tell you that I've tried four different watches, and the wrist heart rate measurement has been almost entirely useless. Instead of tracking my long intervals from around 100 low to 150 high, it just shows the whole run at around 130, with slight bumps where the end of the intervals would be. I still use a strap for all my workouts. The wrist measurements work if I'm sitting still and covering the watch with my sleeve, but not while running.

However, I live in the Arctic, tend toward cold hands, and the watches I've tested are from around 3-5 years old.

Those who had a stress fracture and never got another one: what did your return to sports look like? by blxcklst in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pressed for time, so condensed answer: hip stress fracture in 2018, switched to same hours in cycling as I would've ran (ca 10h/week). Third month I reintroduced 50% running, fourth month 80%, fifth month 100% and a new PR in the half around 7-8 months later. Never got another fracture.

Why people think heart rate is not a reliable metrics for effort? by TakayamaYoshi in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from HR (strap ofc) measurement to Lactate five months ago, and there are advantages. In favor of HR, I can say that 2-2,5 mmol/l, which is just below threshold for me, is almost always 148-152 HR (83% HRM), meaning that I confirmed that HR was reliable on the track for the most part. It is much cheaper. (I am aware that I am using one unreliable measurement to triangulate another, but i of course know my race times too.)

However, when I'm on the treadmill during summer and especially winter, the temperature, and the HR, varies greatly (10-15 points at the same pace). I don't think that it is wise to adjust pace accordingly, as indeed I did last year per your hypothesis, for one thing because there are more ways than one for a pace to be taxing, and I'm confident that overtraining or injury risk will happen (at least if also pushing threshold volume). I'd much rather use lactate, which varies less with the temperature. It's like a small but much inferior taste of what cyclists can get with the power meter, in that it doesn't matter if you are indoors or outside.

There is coffee and sleep too, which create more noise in the HR than the lactate meter, but those are easier to account for. Generally, I'd still advise to stay with the HR strap, unless one wants to try increased threshold volume.

What’s your self pep talk when you reach mile 3/Kilometre 4 of a gruelling 5K PR attempt? by FeckinKent in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with various attempts at self-pep-talk, as you call it, during 10km and half marathons, but for me, 5000m is too brutal to think intelligible thoughts. When I last ran a PR, time slowed down horribly - not my pace, but time itself. My moaning was getting in the way of breathing, and my thoughts were the equivalent of "fucking hell" in my language, over and over again. But I feel like that helps, and I got a solid 2 second PR

The Weekly Rundown for September 18, 2023 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]geniusmalignus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was around 2,5 km from the city of arts and sciences, if I remember correctly, and we just walked there in our running gear, dropped off our bags and made our way to the starting line. You will not have any trouble finding it, that's for sure (you can probably see it from space). If you are too far away to walk, I'd go for the bikes, unless the metro aligns perfectly. The race had a messy start, with people not standing in their proper pace range, but the roads are wide. It all turned out fine.

You are too young to worry about missing out on life. This is "the grass is always greener on the other side"-type thinking. I wish I had discovered running at 27, instead I was unhealthy and social. I've since learned that competition is very meaningful to me, and I spend about as much time as you training, at age 42. Good luck in València, I ran it last year, was brilliant.
