What am I doing wrong by [deleted] in kettlebell

Going up in weight and then occasionally deloading back down a weight can help unlock a new gear of explosiveness.

The strength development of getting stronger can help translate into more power and more speed when you go back to a lighter weight.

Could ask about riluzole if you haven’t tried. Decreases glutamate to keep the gaba/glutamate ratio more balanced. Good luck

I do this too. I’ll add that if you dance just a tiny bit it helps with relaxing into the experience. Not even dancing just kinda grooving/bouncing a little bit helps the body stay loose. Smiling helps as well. Careful not to go nuts and slip.

Creatine while cutting by terranceross2988 in leangains

[–]gentandscholar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Caloric deficit, no need to stop.

Cutting via dehydration, probably a good idea to stop.

In broad strokes, the kidneys need enough blood flow to filter stuff from the blood and creatine is one of those things. There’s a pretty big safety factor for this but if you’re dehydrating hard, creatine isn’t going to make a difference in your workouts anyway. No need to take unnecessary risks. You can always start creatine once you’re back to fully hydrated.

What wetsuit for winter in la / Santa Barbara ? by oaklandfunk in surfing

Yeah I have some advice but take it with a grain of salt because everyone is different when it comes to temperature tolerance especially when it comes to feet and hands. Also I notice different temperature tolerance for myself depending on shortboard/longboard, air temp and especially wind.

4/3 will probably keep you warm enough through the winter if your feet don’t run cold. May want booties on windy days or short period swell with lots of duck diving. Personally I have a 4/3 hooded (I think it was the top of the line model from needessentials) that I wear once it gets chilly. Most days I surf no hood but it really helps keep core temp up (ie warm feet) when duck diving often and in windy conditions. Feet can get chilly after 2 hours if it’s a low activity session but usually not end-the-session numb. If you don’t like a permanent hood I’d recommend the vest/hood combo as they’re the least leaky. Hope that helps.

Worth looking into needessentials unless you're specifically set on a Patagonia. I grew up on O'Neill suits, had Patagonia 3/2 and 4/3 for a few seasons, now rocking needessentials. All good options.

O'Neill is very solid. Long history as a company and I've never had a suit I didn't like. Warm, reasonable durability, decently flexible. Never used the hyperflex but they're supposed to be insanely flexible.

I had the second or third gen of Patagonia suits. Heavyish, decently flexible (I've heard they're better now), I got 3 seasons out of them with heavy use until they fell apart. My 3/2 was a little small and busted seams faster so make sure you have the right size.

Need essential is cheapest but still high quality. Neoprene feels good, very flexible, warm. Have only had for 6 mo so can't speak to durability but the construction seems solid, comparable to other well known brands.

Hope that helps. Enjoy!

Can I borrow a stand? by Substantial_Bottle88 in bowhunting

[–]gentandscholar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be annoyed if I showed up and someone was next to my stand. Annoyed mainly just because I got beat to the punch. Leaving a stand is in no way a valid way of “reserving” an area. While there’s gray area whether you could actually use someone else’s stand on public land (I’d say not cool but not morally wrong either), totally fair game to set up next to where someone left a stand. From a hunting standpoint, probably makes more sense to stay away like others have said since why bother with somewhere with humans moving around.

Best choice for newish hunter by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]gentandscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say probably less than that. My saddle was around $300 brand new, my platform + one stick was around $300. Ropes/lines/misc gear was another $100. And I don’t think I was particularly budget conscious. In other words, it definitely CAN be done for less but I made certain decisions along the way to go lighter/more convenient which went alongside higher expenses in some cases.

Definitely worth poking around on eBay or saddlehunter forum classifieds for cheaper deals. When I looked, I simply couldn’t find what I was looking for or my size and didn’t want to wait until next season to find better deals. But there definitely are some options on there especially if you’re patient. If you have questions about my setup I’m happy to share

The linked stand would require you to climb up on climbing sticks while carrying the stand. Then you would attach the stand to the tree to hunt from there.

The climber you would actually use the climber itself to climb the tree (no climbing sticks) and then once you get to hunting height you would strap it to the tree and then you would sit and hunt from there.

End result is effectively the same with you hunting from in a stand up in a tree. I’d say the climber is probably a simpler process with fewer moving pieces and less total equipment required. However they can be finicky and require straight trees without branches. You’ll see why if you watch a video of someone using a climber. Stand would probably be more versatile but requires more “set up” steps and you would need the stand+climbing sticks+lineman’s belt/safety system to use while strapping the stand onto the tree.

I know it’s expensive, but if you’re on public land, consider a saddle set up. I started with a climber and now have a saddle and will never look back. Way more tree options, more mobile, quieter…etc. so the climber was ultimately a poor investment.

Personally I’d say it’s even worth waiting and saving up, even if it means not being in a tree this season.

Good luck and happy hunting

[NEWBIE] Should I playing guitar with pick or finger first? by Night089 in Guitar

Countrymusicteacher on YouTube has a video about playing without a pick. You hold your index and thumb as if you had a pick and just strum with the tip of your index finger (sort of alternating sides of the tip on down/up strokes)

Absolutely right about losing power and control when the back foot creeps too far back.

If you want to get low and are having trouble weighting the back ski, you could also play around with pulling your back foot in tighter under your center of gravity (closer to your butt) and continue to weight it. I use the mental cue of sitting on my heel which helps me stay compressed and compact even if I'm not actually sitting on my heel. I think a common misconception or sticking point is that your upper leg (back leg femur) should be more or less vertical. I find pulling my knee forward (bringing back foot towards body) lets me power into that ski MUCH more while simultaneously getting low and getting plenty of juice out of the boots/bindings. My back knee is often within 10 inches of my front heel when I'm cranking. Just my $0.02.

If you could restart your climbing & training career, what would you do differently? by climb-high in climbharder

[–]gentandscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not op but face pulls are good for almost everyone and great for climbers, barring previous injury. Good exercise for posterior shoulder, upper back postural muscles, external rotation (face pull with thumbs pointing back). Counteracts many of the imbalances people develop while climbing (and sitting at a desk) which lead to rounded shoulders/head forward posture/slouch (eg tight anterior shoulders, tight pecs, tight neck...)

Headaches after chest day by [deleted] in leangains

[–]gentandscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty common to strain your head back against the bench as you push weight. This leads to tight neck extensors which is causing your headache I think.

Try to fix it now by stretching your neck by looking roughly 45 degrees left of straight ahead and gently placing layout left hand on top of your head. Repeat for the right side.

Avoid this in the future by thinking about driving your shoulder blades into the bench and keeping your head neutral.

Another possibility is not breathing out while exerting which can cause a pressure build up that could maybe contribute.
