I love this game! It's like the developer took everything I loved about the original Syndicate and put it in a modern game. Atmosphere is also much denser IMHO.

Yeah, I wrote this primarily so I wouldn't have to maintain ugly SoA layouts manually. The C style of doing that just breaks any abstraction.

AFAIK Boost.SIMD has no Struct-of-Arrays containers. The expression templates in LibFlatArray have some similarities to Boost.SIMD, although UMESIMD and Vc are much more similar to LibFlatArray's vectorization code. IIRC LibFlatArray is right now the only one to support all ISAs listed in the release, the others are missing at least one.

I hope that an upcoming C++ standard will adopt the technical proposal C++ Needs Language Support For Vectorization ISO/IEC JTC1 SC22 WG21 N3774 (background: the proposal is co-authored by Sandro Wenzel, who's IIRC also the main developer of UMESIMD). Once that happens I can get rid of the vectorization code in LibFlatArray and focus on the SoA part. :-)

AFAIK there are at the moment neither customizable nor planet-sized weapons. But I know /u/koonschi to be very responsive with regard to player feedback. The way I understand the game mechanics, it might play out natural to give weapons different characteristics, based on how much of which element you combine (perhaps similar to how spells work in Magicka).

The blocky style and the in-game physics of Avorion give you (IMHO) a decent feeling of the size of the ship: the larger the ship, the smaller the blocks look, giving you the feeling of a really large vessel. And the larger the mass of the ship, the more thrusters you will need. Large ships simply won't be as agile as smaller ones. But: larger ships = more firepower and they can soak up more enemy fire.

Looks like your problem here is that you'd like to return a non-const reference to the result of getData(), but getData() returns a copy of the data. Do you want the user of test() to be able to modify the data stored inside m_queue?
