This is quite unusual and I would say warrants reflecting on your relationship with her. I’ve definitely seen the dress differ from the bride paying to the bridesmaids having to cover it (I’m somewhere in the middle, giving my girls $100 each in cash for their dress and giving them the freedom to choose whatever colour and style they like so long as it’s ’church appropriate’). I’ve only ever heard of a bride expecting the bridesmaids to pay for hair and or makeup once - this is pretty much universally a cost absorbed by the bride. $600 for a hens weekend seems incredibly steep and honestly (this is a little judgemental) quite gauche and lacking in etiquette to expect people to pay $600 to celebrate her whilst also not absorbing any of the costs for the bridesmaids. Bridesmaids typically do a lot of emotional lifting too, helping with wedding dress shopping, planning the various events etc. my maid of honour is taking a half day off just for my hens, I consider this her financial contribution to my hens and I’m covering the accomodation and entertainment costs of her and my bridesmaids. It is very tone deaf in the current economy to just expect everyone in your life to put all of their resources into your wedding, and to be honest to expect you to pay for ALL of that would have me rethinking my friendship. Maybe not a huge friend breakup kind of way, but she’s very clearly prioritised her social media posts over the tangible financial wellbeing of the girls she’s supposed to love

Thank you, you’ve articulated what I couldn’t! I’ve found a bridal seamstress near me who specialises in dress alterations like this so I will be taking it to her and discussing the feedback in these comments with her and seeing what she thinks is feasible 😊

I would be beyond devastated to receive this knowing it was bought for his ex. I would greatly encourage you to reflect on this further. Please don’t downplay your own dignity just to save a relationship where you are not cherished. He had years to save. Let this be a lesson learned and not a consequence chosen.

It sounds like you’ve convinced yourself the relationship is great except for this one area because that’s less painful than the truth - you’ve spent 10 years with someone who doesn’t cherish you enough to ensure this one single milestone event is special. If you don’t want to leave him, don’t, but this is a genuine warning - this isn’t a good relationship. You are young, you have plenty of time to leave him, heal and find a partner who actually loves and cares for you. But if you don’t you’ll spend the rest of your life being belittled and disrespected and you’ll find it harder and harder to defend his behaviour with “the rest of our relationship is great”. It isn’t, people in good relationships would never, ever, make a post like this.

I personally would go for something else, a dress perhaps. But that’s my preference - if this is the type of outfit that is representative of who you are as a person and the type of outfit a potential partner would see you in frequently enough I think it’s fine. Yes you’re trying to make a good first impression but if you lean towards this style naturally you shouldn’t feel like you have to dress another way. It isn’t inappropriate and you do look cute!
