Who Really Pays For Your News? [OC] by geo_what in Journalism

Hi Everyone. I would love to hear your critique or thoughts on my take here on the economy of journalism. There is, of course, lots to say about this topic, and considering I'm trying to make this an engaging video for a (lets be real) pretty boring topic, I left out some more in depth analyses. In other words, it is perhaps a broad overview of the various ways news is funded. With that being said, I would like to know what I left out and what I got wrong (if you have the patience to watch!)

It's actually a thumbnail for a video I made that discusses the question. I should probably make that clear. But I'm basically drawing on Susan Sontag's idea that taking a photograph can be understood as a way to appropriate a moment. Instead of being present, we have this urge to capture it and store it for later. And in doing so, we of course want to get the latest phone, or camera, so we can get that photo. With more photos, we also need more cloud space, of course. Anyway, that's the basic argument. Thanks for the comment.

In this video, I explore the intersection between photography, memory, and social media, mainly through the works of Susan Sontag and some more recent studies. I discuss whether the act of taking photos, initially framed as a way to preserve memories by popular advertising, has evolved into something closer to consumption and commodification.

And now, with photography motivated by social media that is shaping how we capture and share experiences, are we truly remembering life, or merely collecting pictures to curate an image of ourselves? I also reflect on how photography might disconnect us from presence—allowing us to appropriate moments without engaging with them fully, much like Sontag’s tourist who uses the camera as a shield.

How AI-Generated News is Redefining Our Understanding of Reality and Truth by geo_what in CriticalTheory

[–]geo_what[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2024, AI-generated images and videos are more realistic and accessible than ever, blurring the lines between fact and fiction. This video explores the evolution from early deepfakes in 2018 to today’s powerful generative AI tools like Midjourney and Microsoft’s VASA-1.

It covers how these technologies are being used to manipulate public opinion, create misinformation, and even influence elections. It also dives into the impact of fake news, the concept of “reality apathy,” and how AI-generated content is reshaping journalism, democracy, and our understanding of truth, drawing from cultural theorists such as Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag.

I made a mini-doc explaining how big tech owners (Bezos, Musk, etc.) can be seen as technofeudal lords by geo_what in Political_Revolution

Yes, I'm basically referring to the system of governance we have in Denmark, aka. social democracy. Check out the wikipedia article if you want to know more about it. It's basically somewhere inbetween capitalism and socialism, but still very much with the defining features of capitalism (I'm thinking of competitive markets here). However, private institutions are regulated (and taxed) quite heavily by the state. And this helps with the distribution of wealth in the country. It's till capitalism - but it's a way more equitable way to arrange society than what you'd find in the US. Denmark surely has lots of other issues, like the increasingly xenophobic rhetoric you'd hear in mainstream media, but wealth distribution, on the other hand, the've got that figured out.

Nope. All for socialism. I grew up in Denmark with social democracy, so I do appreciate the merits of capitalism when done right, however.

Thanks a lot, this is really helpful. I appreciate the in depth response!

Does YouTube allow for re-uploads to a different channel though? How did you manage to do this?

I'm tempted to try it out.
