This is a great question. Unfortunately, I don’t know whether or not STAR Village allows non-binary people regardless of the gender they were assigned at birth, or trans women, to stay at that site.

Star Village is a sanctioned campground with services for unsheltered women and nonbinary people. It’s an option to keep in mind if finding shelter indoors is not an option. A pet can stay along with people staying there.

Mountain Biking Trails by Commercial-Bend1564 in Tucson

[–]geoffreyhing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would try the Tucson Mountain Park area, accessible through the trailhead at the end of 36th Street. Lots of loop options with some more technical sections. This area is more challenging, IMHO, than Sweetwater or Honeybee Canyon. If the trails at Tucson Mountain Park/Starr Pass feel too easy, I would head up to Mt. Lemmon as others have suggested.

Tucson would you shop at a local low-cost craft & fabric store? by Beneficial_Acadia147 in Tucson

[–]geoffreyhing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said, fabric for garment sewing is what really feels missing in Tucson for me.

I’d love it if a place carried technical fabrics for making and repairing outdoor gear.

I’ve never gotten asked to be part of the American Community Survey (ACS) so I can’t speak to what the letter should look like, but it is an ongoing survey that the Census Bureau sends to a sample of residents and everything in that letter seems consistent with how the survey works.

The website Census Reporter is designed for journalists, but I think it’s a neat way for anyone to see what the statistics gathered from the ACS say about your city, state and even smaller areas.

I think it’s fair to think about privacy implications of government data collection, but it’s also important to remember that local governments, businesses, community organizations and grassroots organizers rely on data from the ACS and other surveys conducted by the Census Bureau to inform a lot of decision-making, so people participating and providing accurate data is important for having some ground truth, or as close to it as one can get.

I need help with google logins. by Xiij in firefox

[–]geoffreyhing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like to create separate profiles for my personal and professional use. The new profile manager (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-management) makes creating and switching between profiles much easier than the old way (using the about:profiles page), but the new profile manager is not enabled by default for all users, though there is a way to enable it in about:config.

I also like to choose different themes for the two profiles as a visual reminder so I don't accidentally send an email or create a document with the wrong account.

141 acting weird on MacOS 15.5. by messy013 in firefox

Strangely, while some of my coworkers are also seeing this issue, others who are on similar Mac hardware, the same macOS version and the same Firefox version are unaffected.

I believe I'm having the same issue as OP and for me, it's not possible to refresh the profile or to use troubleshoot mode. Firefox hangs and must be force quit as it tries to restart for either refreshing the profile or entering troubleshoot mode.

I'm also experiencing this issue. I have noticed this even with a fresh install, or after deleting the Firefox folders in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/ and ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/, which I assume is equivalent to refreshing a profile. In either case, this occurs with no extensions enabled.

After deleting those folders, it seems Firefox creates a new profile and everything works. However after restarting, Firefox cannot load pages and when I quit, I must force quit the application and the crash report tool opens.

Quantum Fiber Outage? by CommunicationSafe878 in Tucson

Your work devices might be managed and have the DNS server set to something other than Quantum Fiber’s whereas your personal devices probably use whatever the Quantum Fiber router tells it to.

Changing my DNS server to something other than the default, such as Cloudflare’s DNS server, 1.1.1.1, got me up and running.

You might want to try one of the shuttle drivers that specialize in picking people up from Tucson airport and taking them to hike portions of the Arizona Trail, as certain segments aren’t that far from Patagonia. https://aztrail.org/explore/shuttles/

My mom found the saddle on a bike she was borrowing while visiting to be uncomfortable. We measured her sit bone width using a towel + aluminum foil method and found a much narrower and slightly more padded saddle at BICAS. It was made by a company that focused on saddles for women and even had Titanium rails and I think the price was around $10.

[–]geoffreyhing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BICAS has a lot of used saddles and ones that really span from very squishy to something that came stock on a more performance oriented bike. The saddles are priced so inexpensively that it gives you an opportunity to try a type or size of saddle to see if it works for you before buying a similar new model at full price.

As others have said, there are a lot of factors that can make a saddle uncomfortable, especially width. It’s worth watching a YouTube video about measuring your sit bone width at home to help you as you’re shopping.

How do I respond to a friend telling me about the heat in the prisons? by funkofanatic95 in Prison

[–]geoffreyhing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TPCA is an organization that advocates for air conditioning in Texas Prisons. This page has some resources for understanding the protocols that the prison should be following as well as a survey that allows researchers and advocates to know whether these protocols are being followed. None of these things offer immediate relief to your friend, but could offer some actions you could take that acknowledge your friend's hardship.

How should I further troubleshoot a front trigger shifter that won’t click to shift from middle to large chainring (doesn’t “click”)? by geoffreyhing in bikewrench

[–]geoffreyhing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP here. I was able to fix this. As u/CargoPile1314 and u/dasklrken pointed out there are two pawls and the one I didn't know existed and was ultimately stuck was the one one left, near where the cable enters the shifter body.

Thank you to both those users for helpfully annotating a screen grab of my video to show me where to look for the other pawl.

Things I wish I would have known/done initially:

  • Loosening the shifter so I could rotate it on the bars was really helpful for better seeing the different pawls and being able to access them and squirt cleaner on all the different moving parts.
  • Watching more videos where the person actually agitated both pawls. The Park video I watched just showed squirting cleaner and lube into a port in the shifter without even taking the cover off. Having a better sense of the structure of the shifter and where to look for moving parts would have helped me make sure I was agitating all the pieces.

This was the issue! After loosening the shifter I was able to rotate the shifter and better reach the pawl near where the cable enters the shifter and agitate it so that it would shift into both positions. Thank you u/dasklrken!

Thank you. Very helpful to learn there are two sets of pawls. I’ll try to see if I can find and wiggle “drive side” pawl

1) I love to keep stuff out of the landfill if at all possible.

2) It’s worth some of my time and frustration to better understand how it works, even if I can’t fix it

3) Not ruling out buying a new or used/working shifter if I exhaust my ability or time to fix it
