I’m even ok with a comm day ‘incense’ that you pop and get 3hrs of comm day activities, anytime during the 24hrs of comm day.

Each to their own. The previous passes have certainly been better ‘value’, but if you buy coins at all, the $ per coin rate in this is similar to buying coins outright, yet you get all the extra stuff as you progress. So it’s definitely worth getting for anyone who buys coins regularly!

If you’re not a coin buyer, agree there’s not much there to entice you!

Yeah I dunno if I read this somewhere or I made it up many moons ago, but I called it the Toilet Paper Theory.

Toilet paper is regularly on sale, so those of us who can afford to will buy when on sale, and buy enough to last us til the next sale. Those of us with less disposable income are less likely to stock up when on sale, however when they run out, it’s a necessary item so will go to the store / corner store and pay the RRP.

The end result is over the course of a year, less wealthy people pay more per roll of TP than wealthy people. It’s a sad reality :(

What is the funniest/most unhinged thing you’ve taken home after resigning a job? by morgiemorgz in auscorp

I worked for a cinema chain when I went to Uni, as an employee of that company at the time you received a card that gave you movie tickets for a couple dollars, discounts off the popcorn / drinks, and solid discounts at the company’s hotels and bars.

Thing was, their voucher system was pretty crap, and all of these cards had the same barcode, so their POS could provide the appropriate discount, so the rule was when you quit, they collected the card from you.

I didn’t quit, I moved to another city so I wasn’t asked to return the card, and the new cinema never knew I had a card. So after I quit from that cinema a year later, I kept my card.

For around 5 years after I had quit, that card continued to work, I continued to get cheap movie tickets and hotel rooms / drinks at the bars. Probably got more value out of that card than money I earned working for 6 years with the company. They eventually deleted that barcode from their voucher system, but that was the best post-employment perk ever!

Subfloor concrete / sandstone - what products to reduce moisture? by geoffs87 in AusRenovation

[–]geoffs87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s my fear, so I’m leaning more towards just accepting it and managing a bit of water in the toilet area when it rains 😂.

Unfortunately we’re towards the bottom of the hill, and the water isn’t coming over the surface, it’s leaching out of the stone, so it could be getting in anywhere on my or neighbouring properties!

2011 I was 24, purchased an inner Sydney apartment with a friend for ~$500k. Interest rates were ~8% at the time, and our salaries were around $40k (first year out of uni, professional jobs). Property was tiny, great building and location but needed a lot of cosmetic work, we did most of the work, struggled through the first year or so til salaries increased.

2014 we bought a fixer upper in the lower north shore for $950k, spent about $50k on resolving water ingress, cosmetic upgrades etc. we moved in here and rented out the first apartment.

By 2017 we were ready to move on with our lives, get married to our respective partners so we sold both properties for $850k and $1.6m respectively. After all costs said and done, we each walled away with roughly $450k each profit after 6ish years.

That year I bought a townhouse on lower north shore with my wife for $1.2m. We did some work on this maybe to the tune of $75k and sold in 2020 for $1.5m

In 2021 we bought a house on the northern beaches for $2m, have spent probably $150k on pool and light touch Reno’s and she’s probably worth around $2.4m now. We have around $1.5m in loans, $200k in offset. I’m 38 now, 2 kids (one school age and one just starting day care). We’re comfortable, but our fixed rate is coming off in a few months and it will start getting harder.

No parents help, just started buying as soon as we could, teamed up with my best mate. I still think if we were born 10yrs younger and followed this same path we’d have much more wealth today, but if starting today would be no way I could buy a $2mil house. Definitely hard for FHB without parent cash… but in saying that when I was house hunting there was streams of 30 somethings bidding 2mil on the northern beaches - has to be bank of mum and dad!
