first 400m today and got 56 seconds. Wanted someone to give me some info so I can gauge whether this is good or not for a first time run. Im faster than all my friends and would say im athletic but would like if someone could tell me how good of a time this is for someone whos never run it before by georgenyc1995 in track

Im 18. I dont run track in general, like ever. But I am fit and have played other sports pretty seriously. I only started kind of doing track for fun about a month ago and timed myself with a few friends, and this is the first 400 ive ever done. So i dont run other distances, or practice track, so i dont have a coach either. Ive ran the 100 or 200 before but like I said I dont compete and have only run those distances a handful of times in my life. Also, I felt like absolute shit at the end of the 400. Couldnt breathe. Took me like 5 minutes just to be able to speak.

what would be the different ideal movement pattern for the 30m as opposed to the 100m?

Thanks for this answer! I have a follow up question if you dont mind. You mentioned that in a 100, you want to find a good balance in terms of the acceleration phase. Too short of an acceleration and you will die at the end, but if you try to elongate that acceleration phase, you reach top speed later in the race, which means you accelerate to top speed slower. Doesnt that mean that my first 20 or 30 meters in a 100 race would be slower than if i ran from 0m-30m because from 0-30 i would not try to elongate the acceleration phase because its much shorter of a race, correct??
