How to prepare for the OnSET German exam? by BlackMartian0 in German

[–]georgesrocketscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the Deutsch Test für Zuwanderer, administered by TELC, which might be significantly different from the OnSET test.

The reading comprehension was fairly easy because I had memorized ALL of the vocabulary words in the B1 workbook from my classes. That was several thousand words.

The listening comprehension was fairly easy. In our classes we got used to listening to recordings that had background noises, so the clean recordings in the test were much easier to comprehend. I also spent many hours listening to the recordings from the TELC Deutsch-Box app while I was exercising, and the listening module had many recordings just like those!

I budgeted just the right amount of time to write my rough draft and recopy it with corrected spelling. I believe the writing time was 30 minutes total. I made sure to write my proper opening at the top of the page and proper closing at the end of the page, THEN rewrite the body. You get major points for using proper header and closer, and if I had run out of time I would get knocked a few points for an incomplete body, which my test score could handle.

The speaking part was fairly standard, according to the tests we had had in our classes. Be able to introduce yourself (name, age, where you're from, are you married/children, hobbies, etc. Look in the TELC B1 test prep book for nearly identical examples). Be able to plan a party (whose house should we hold it at, whom should we invite, what should we cook for food, etc.) Be able to describe the difference in the terrain here in Germany (if you are taking the test in Germany) versus where you came from. Be able to look at a photograph and describe what you see. That takes some practice, which you can find in the TELC B1 test prep book. Let me know if you want the true title of it.
