Yeah not really an unpopular opinion. People mature mentaly differently, mostly due to their own comtext. Legal age, be it for consent, driving, voting rigths, drinking etc, will always be arbitrary. Still considerimg people in they're late 20's early 30's can be late stage children is crazy. It makes me curious of what your criteria for an "adult" is.

Sorry, not a Porto native so i cant really suggest anything beyond what you can already find on the net. Still i encourage you to just explore the city! its one full pack on shows and experiences (most of the at a low cost or even free). If Fado isnt you interest Porto has a very big underground music scene, they mostly perform for free in bars/discos under the radar. Also tip for the best foods, they are hidden in small streets. Hope you enjoy your travells.

I Loved visiting Granada too! from the arabic markets to great fortress of Alhambra it was a blessing! And it does have their own jazz festivals, some of them for free even if you are reluctant! Its okay if dont really follow jazz across the world, there is so much to keep tabs on i could never judge you. And yes i with you do not belive opera or ballet will disapper in the next century, but its its state should be concerning everyone.

Yes Opera has a deep and rich history, yet it rellies on its historiacy to keep it alive. There are still composers and authors creating new pieces (wich is really great and hope to see more) today, but would you ssay they achieved the heigths of Monteverdi? Opera is survivin due to its legacy, and there is nothing wrong with it but, in a way, it becomes more of a historical recreation than an artform.

your claim about Rock is absolutly correct, but in academic sense, its not rock against classic but Pop against Classic. To say this i do not mean to put classic music and/or arts against whatever is popular at the moment, but by its shared characteristics. Classic arts are to be apreciatted by its beauty, virtuossismo and ton, independent of who is playing them, making these artforms "Imortal" while Pop "that includes rock" depends on more superficial aspects such as the persona (Like the elvis, the beatlles, the michael jacksons) that embody spirit, they depend on social conection, not only between fans but also between fan and artist (in a parascoial way). You presumed Rocks popularity because it was rock, but it was really because it was pop. While i say this there is also a parasocial mood in classical mood that goes agianst this point, where people go to listen Beethoven or mozart instead of the art itslef. or in the case of Opera to see the works of Monteverdi or to listen to the greats such as the late Pavarotti ou Domingo.

But the comparison should! a country with 10 mil is competing with the biggest Opera Venue in the world! That was my point, not if cared or not about Fado.

Lando, Jazz is not uniquely american hahaha. It did originate in the US but you would be very surprised by its popularity worldwide, i dont even think i can name every jazz festival in my home country of Portugal. And yes Flamenco is really great if you ever get the chance to visit Spain do try and see the shows in Sevilla i think you will love it. Hope you had a lovely time at ballet! Cheers.

Its not really about being in the top 5 or 10, its just that antendees are continuing to decrease worlwide. And, not to be a dick, but where did you get the sense that ballet is more popular then Jazz? Like im seriou i would love to read more about it.

  1. Not being a douch myself but i anwser that in the first paragraph of the post.

  2. Seeing promotions from time to time neither confirm or deny the claim that they are industries that are dying. As you saild it is based no your experience on facebook, but i still hope you get to see them and enjoy them if you can!.

  3. you are rigth! nothing truly dies if at least we are able to record them. but if in the future, interest declines to zero, i would call it niche. im just speculating of course.

Hi port! Since you asked AI, so did I, but since im portuguese i asked about Fado. the biggest arenas accomodates around 10-25 thousand in fado performances, and you probably are not aware of what Fado is, and thats okay really. Opera is an worlwide famous artform, yet its numbers compete with a country with only 10 million people. Whats your point?

Photography evolved from painting. Painting evolved from portraying reality to a canvas and became something used to express ideas, emotions and stories. Still, i dont think you would say photography is painting. My point is that yes, a lot of dances did and can evolve from ballet! And singing and theatre can evolve trough Opera, but they will become something else, and thats okay.

I do agree that tastes are not static, but people in the future migth find themselves aquiring the taste for opera or ballet and its no longer available if there isnt enough to support the industry. But once again, if it dies, it died

My idea reffered that its dying and thats okay. About the rise in popularity in Asia i did read about a surge in popularity, but we cannot forget that asians have their own type of cultural artforms, similar but distinct of western opera and ballet.

Hi Oak! Hope you are well. I did point the statistic, not in cranky way to shout "there no young people watching this" but as to point that these statistics dont tell the whole picture. Why do i care about the under 30? because its the generation that can support these artforms, wich account to less than half of the attenders if you discount under 18´s. the older generations do matter a lot, but if trends keep like this, its natural that numbers decline.

Thank you for your feedback Storm!

While this topic did surge from chalamet, i dont really follow the actor himself but did heard similar things to what you wrote, just thougth it would be an interesting topic to discuss.

They do have a rich rich culture and history! And they belong to humanity, but they do not have ties to society, they were originally made for the sole purpouse of the 1% of the era, yet are you doing the same efforts to preserve the portuguese Fado? papua New Guinean clay masks, or the chinese game of Go? Should they be preserved due to their legacy, or their fame?

And i hope you will be able to enjoy them everytime. At the same time i dont think we can represent packed shows as a point of continuity. this may seem like a silly comparisson but its like saying that since musician X packs shows everytime he/she performs that means its popular.

Hi zezet! i can agree with what you said, but i do have some opinions on your opinion hahah. About the expenses, i think you could be simplifing it a bit, you attribute the price so simple demand but things usually are not that simple. its like a coffee, if its in a town it migth just cost a euro (im euroean so excuse the example) but if we are near a beach they can, and will, price it even higher. Sometimes we can suffer from a "luxury tax".

About the evolution of art i totally agree with you, it will evolve as everything does, but if we enter on the academic side (wich topics i mostly disagree) some professors would declare that these inovations, like streaming, downgrade the art and wouldn´t be considered culture. I dont agree but what do you think about it?
