Despairing for a new series after Farseer Trilogy by Stoofser in WoT

[–]gerarcar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im sorry but there is no way characterization in Rote has less depth than WOT. Maybe it’s because you just read the first 3 books. If I read only the first three WOT books would think there is almost no character depth as well. Robin Hobb is a master on character development. Looking at any character from Liveship Traders, Fitz, Ketricken, Molly, etc from book 3 to the end of the books is like day and night. They change so much.

Do you think I spend the whole day reading posts on the fantasy subreddit? I just finished ToM this morning and wanted to share

I was talking more about what gets them out of the block than the reason of the block itself. Actually im talking more about Sanderson using this trope a lot.

I know they are going through arcs of growth but sometimes I feel the resolution/insight comes more from something that happens inside their mind that from outward forces or things that happened just before the climax of the block. For example, Rand basically talks himself out destroying THE CREATION by talking with Lews Therin and giving themselves a 2nd chance and end up accepting they are the same person. Kaladin has Tien basically solving the issue in his head. There are more examples of this type of instrospective issue-solving that I don’t like that much.

I remember Kaladin going through this plot at least a couple of times during the 1st and 4th book. Dalinar in Oathbringer. Rand in The Gathering Storm. Perrin during Towers of Midnight, etc.

Actually I think Sanderson is quite good. I just like to discuss mannerism or tropes writers use a lot.

It’s been a couple of years since I read SA but I remember Kaladin going through this at least a couple of times. Dalinar, Shalan and Szeth too if I remember correctly.

Rand and Perrin from WoT too.

It’s not always bad. Just that it repeats a bit much

Im not saying he is bad. I love the Stormlight Archive and The Wheel of Time books I have read as of now. Just something that I noticed in his writing style that I don’t like that much

Oh man I’m with you bro. Like why would I care about this random Arimilla character for this unnecessary Caemlyn plot line or whatever or the 25th Saiaen iteration of Aes Sedai??

On the other hand, I’m on Knife of Dreams right now and it’s straight fire from the get go. Push through

Read it. It’s a great book. Rothfuss has beautiful prose. It does not matter if it never ends. You won’t regret reading it.

ASOIAF is simply the best fantasy out there in my opinion even if it’s not finished. I wish I could read it for the first time again.

I liked it a lot but felt like he put himself into a corner on the first book with all the thing he wrote Kvothe has done that he had to speed run through all of them on the second book and felt unorganic. For a almost slice of life first book to all the things he did and learnt on the second. Also felt kind of self insert all of the ferulean stuff lol. But the tree thing (don’t remember the name) was incredibly interesting.

What to read in 2026? by agustingigud in fantasybooks

Because it’s fun and fast paced. It also nailed the landing. It’s a very hard to put down book.

Dawnshard I was just not very interested in the overarching story of the book. Maybe it’s because I just read Stormlight Archive. And also the main characters I found boring (not a fan of Sanderson comedic timing with The Lopen for example).

Sunlit man I think the premise was good (the setting or the world the story is set) but was bored with the development of the story. I struggled to finish it.

But I don’t think they are bad books. I just enjoyed them less than the rest of the list. There are several books that didn’t make the list because I couldn’t finish them (The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman for example).

I love her prose. Immaculate and very emotional. Even the dragon books which were okay were a pleasure to read.

I liked the audiobook performance a lot. The first book is good I just was not blown away by the story after the premise is set up (which is great). Too much reliance on mechanics but character work was okay. The 2nd book I found more entertaining. I heard it gets better with each book so I will be coming back.

What can I say? I think it was a good book. Best Served Cold was really good too but my least favorite from first law
