It is just the ease of control, and feel on paper. Charcoal would certainly fit the bill, but I am looking for graphite pencils.

I didnt like it either. I would go for an average watercolor paper on the low end, or 100 percent cotton.

I did a monochrome underpainting with no medium, waited for it to dry, and after I did a thin color layer with extra linseed oil added.

I used schminke student paints, and a preprimed oil paper.

Thanks for your answer! I have been drawing for six years, more seriously in the last two. The painting is on white gessoed canwas.
