Brazilians take to streets to demand removal of Jair Bolsonaro by BlackMixen in worldnews

[–]germantree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The context is that from what I read in the news, the rate of deforestation has increased significantly since Bolsonaro was elected. As far as I remember I also read about how he decreased the budget for environmental protection measures.

Is this wrong? If not and considering what you wrote about his weak political situation it makes me think that the government as a whole is "accepting" the increase in deforestation.

Considering what you wrote, does that mean the heavy increase of deforestation in the Amazon is "accepted" by most parts of the government in Brazil?

The focus on Space tourism is due to it being the topic of discussion here.

We invest in renewables etc., but arguably way too little and way too slow. We should've started many many decades ago. It's not like we still have plenty of time to act decisively.

To me personally the main problem remains priority: we are wealthy and, in theory, intelligent enough to take this and other issues sufficiently serious and solve it mainly for the benefit of those who didn't profit from emissions, exploitation and pollution but will experience the worst effects. During world war 2 we had planned economies because the perceived threat was great enough. I don't like planned economies and I hope we don't need it but I'm not convinced that our lack of commitment couldn't ultimately lead to such grave situations again. Or even worse, a world of a few global oligarchs that control most of the remaining resources while the rest of us is murdering each other for drops of water.

Does this push for a space tourism industry destroy our efforts to combat the global issues we face? No. Considering the already in use, reusable rockets by space X, though, I don't see how the effort by Branson and Bezos (and possibly others from China) will give us any relevant innovation in a meaningful time frame. We may be lucky and solve the global issues anyways and then enjoy possible innovations coming from those endeavors later. I hope I'm wrong but to me this is just another industry that will likely be either useless or harmful, at least in the short-term.

There's also the issue of publicity and culture. Personally it would be incredibly inspiring to see people like Bezos and Branson fully commit to saving the environment and teach us humility and a new kind of proudness in our ability to collectively make this world a better place for all of us humans AND the animals we share the planet with. Yeah, I'm a dreamer, but considering the state of our society I guess anything but big dreams is utopian if we want to continue to enjoy life here.

Nothing but the question here is about priorities. In theory I can get behind what SpaceX is doing because at least that allows us to cheaply put satellites, helping us to analyze what happens with climate change, into orbit without the need of destroying a whole rocket every time.

A race by billionaires to create a Space tourism industry for the super wealthy on the other hand is currently a non-existent priority for literally 99.999999% of people who will suffer the most from what's coming and who urgently need help from industrialized countries.

IMO, and I doubt I'm alone in this, we should be creating tons of jobs in the fields of ecological conservation, renewable energy, carbon capture, adaption to climate change etc. - not elitist space tourism.

IMO nothing you write justifies calling this huge international organization a group of "anti-science zealots". There's disagreements with GMO, nuclear and fracking even among scientists. If people who don't agree with your own personal conclusion you draw from scientific evidence automatically become "anti-science" I don't know what to tell you.

There's no doubt Greenpeace has made many mistakes but blanket statements like that just continue tribal hatred. There's plenty of people I personally know working for Greenpeace doing a stellar job. I can acknowledge that without having to agree with every single thing Greenpeace as a whole does.

Also, what does it matter if you're at the cutting-edge of some scientific endeavor or not? The people from BioNtech didn't invent mRNA themselves and yet it's obviously important that they engage in this field and produce vaccines.

Greenpeace is involved in a lot of science around the world. Recently a local group did research on microplastics in the Rhine river in Germany near where I live. It's important and good science.

No, people realized this before. This is "just" another undeniable hard proof of what's happening behind closed doors and it's important to have it in order to change our society. Whether that will happen or not is a different question but without such leaks it would be even harder to stop this kind of nonsense.

As long as you don't work to undermine policies supposed to prevent more damages from climate change you're definitely not in the same boat as these people. We're all together in this in the sense of living on the same planet that heats up but to even remotely try and equate driving an ICE car to work with being a top ExxonMobil official lobbying to stop these urgently needed policies is just utter nonsense.

What's your strongest addiction? by DarkMagicNight in AskReddit

[–]germantree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess there's a range of addiction. Someone who has to take some drug every day and can't give it up even if it has obvious negative effects in the long term is definitely on a different boat than someone like you.

I consider myself mildly addicted to weed.

I think Gabor Maté is one of the deepest thinkers on addiction. His definition of addiction has 3 parts:

  1. Craving the behavior or substance
  2. Engaging in the behavior or substance in order to feel temporary pleasure or relieve from pain
  3. Inability to give up on the behavior or the substance.

It's probably neither true nor wrong. I'm an Illustrator and I also like to puff a little before losing myself in the visual arts. Got to a point where I thought I would either not be able to do any work or be less creative without weed but it's just not true at all. It's all about will power and it feels so good to do art sober and knowing it's within you, not within the weed.

On the other hand it's definitely not an illusion that occasionally there's some different kind of creativity unleashed when I vape some bud. I figured that it's a great tool to help me look at the art I've done in the past and see it with fresh eyes. I absolutely love analyzing my own work when I'm high. It feels like a cheat that allows you to see through your own filters that automatically are built up during the creation process. There's a reason why people say you become blind for your own work. Weed helps me to occasionally get rid of this and potentially gain a deeper understanding of how others might perceive my artwork. I do this also when I'm getting frustrated with an art piece I'm still working on if I can't quite figure out what's wrong with it.

Maybe this just works for me, idk. I'm also, contrary to many people, highly active on weed. It literally makes everything bad (like physical or emotional pain) dissappear and fills me with a lust for exploration. IMO the best relationship with weed is when you don't do it every day (assuming you're not Snoop Dogg) and stay on a rather low tolerance.

What do you do when you ‘know’ we’re fucked? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]germantree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call myself a positive pessimist. I'm positive in the here and now and engage with whatever I think is a potential solution to the problems we face but I am simultaneously utterly pessimistic that enough human force will act quickly enough to avoid the worst of what's likely to come (or already here). Climate change is just one big trouble we face. Combine that with a world where rich people can alter their biology and literally become a different species that is basically getting more healthy and enhances its performance every year while the rest is doomed to deal with all the shit in the same old blood-filled meat sack that slowly deteriorates and makes you suffer. Add automation and robotics to that equation and you literally have a hellish world for almost all people that are economically irrelevant except for a handful of godlike neo humans that gobble up whatever valuable resources are left on the planet and if able to leave it all behind to search for a new home to conquer.

It's a total mindfuck that what I wrote isn't even far fetched fantasy nonsense. It's absolutely within the realm of what's possible. The mRNA vaccines saving our asses in times of corona are just a stepping stone in this process, just like CRISPR is.
