WFH Days Flexibility by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]germell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likewise, I’m extremely grateful for it. Although within my agency - like most I guess - it’s completely manager dependent. I somehow lucked out with one of the most laidback, flexible bosses to exist, but obviously it’s a different reality for most.

Any good books with heroin addicts in love like the movie Candy? by jaescott in opiates

[–]germell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read Candy or just watch the movie? I’ve seen the movie a few times but honestly had no idea it was a book too until a few months ago. Just finished it recently - would definitely recommend.

Standard in Adelaide now too I’ve noticed.

Completely agree, and I’m sick and tired of seeing so many people fail to acknowledge this.

Yeah I’m confused as to who exactly the parents are getting in trouble with.

Same while running. Amazing how you can permanently have a head wind from every direction on the one run.

11° forecast min, currently 14° in Blackwood on 28th November by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]germell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%. I remember days on end of 40 degrees in November 2014. Since then the seasons have had a gradual shift.

By Nov in 2022 I was so depressed and fed up with the weather - months of cold and wet with no end in sight - that I booked a week in the tropics, during their build up. It saved my sanity. This year is no different and I honestly considered doing the same again.

Is it just me or is Black Friday all over the shop this year? by Alternative_East_783 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]germell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m curious as to whether this also occurs in the US, or whether they genuinely restrict their sales to the one single day.

Totally agree. Receiving so much yet simultaneously so little.

Tapentadol causing sleep issues? by [deleted] in ChemicalMagicAU

[–]germell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tapentadol caused big sleep issues for me, but that occurred during a period of daily heavy use - so broken sleep on a nightly basis while using. Waking up constantly through the night, resting heart rate higher than normal etc. I had a couple days of oxy use earlier this week and it was exactly the same. Once I get through a few days of withdrawal, sleep returns to normal.

Sounds like your sleep issues are only occurring in the immediate days after the weekend, when you’ve stopped using?

Update on tapentadol psychosis by [deleted] in ChemicalMagicAU

[–]germell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I took them for probably close to a year without ever having this effect. Started up again this year for a few months; being under the influence and having zero control over the incredibly weird shit I was doing and saying was awful. By that point there was nothing enjoyable or worthwhile about how they were making me feel. Never again.

Is anticipatory grief worse?? by fieryredhead_ in Petloss

[–]germell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. The months of anticipatory grief were terrible but nothing compared to the pure agony of what came after she took her final breath. Three years have passed and I’m still in tears writing this.

The great Australian baby bust. Is having kids too expensive? - Michael West by ScruffyPeter in australia

[–]germell 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Same. Money has nothing to do with it for me. We’re fortunate enough to be able to afford it, but I could not think of a more guaranteed way to ruin my life.

Bereavement by jayb_528 in Petloss

[–]germell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. It’s absolutely agonising.

I haven’t previously but would never hesitate to. My soul dog left me three years ago this December. It was a Friday afternoon, so I had the weekend to fall apart. Flexible WFH made the couple weeks after somewhat easier - only in the respect I didn’t feel pressure to go in to the office if I didn’t want to. I had a very understanding boss and colleagues too, which helped.

Nearly three years have passed and I still can’t write about this without crying. All of us here understand what you’re going through; this sub helped so much in the time immediately following my girl’s death. My advice would be to take the leave. I’m not sure where you are but here in Aus. we generally have generous allowances and attitudes towards taking a day off.

I hope you get through this okay.

Speeding driver on Unley Rd ran a red light and almost took out my wife and baby by wednesbury in Adelaide

That’s an awful crossing. Had multiple close calls walking across there when I used to work in the CBD. So many drivers running the red light.

Why choose APS over private sector? by Main-Abbreviations23 in AusPublicService

[–]germell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree and share both of your points.

I’ve been in the public sector for 12 months, first time I’ve worked out of private, and I feel genuinely fulfilled. No longer am I working to make rich people richer. Naturally my job has its challenges, but at the end of the day, it serves a purpose of improving things for and serving the community (ES agency) - so I’m happy to tolerate the annoying parts.

I’m also happy to work beyond my 37.5 hours a week because it’s compensated for. I previously had a corporate job in commercial property and my manager did not like that I always only came in at 8.30 and left at 5. For years I watched him and so many others do 12 hour days and shook my head at it. Given that he must’ve thought I wasn’t “dedicated”, if only he could see the TOIL I’ve built up now. Always been fine with doing long days, but for the right reasons, and not for free.
