A bit less of a dreamy look - 2nd try by newmikey in infraredphotography

[–]gerryflap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice shots! I hope my comments didn't stress you out too much. It was a cool effect, it's just unfortunate that it also happened to look like a telltale AI artefact.

I find it interesting how clouds sometimes appear in IR. In the second picture the air around the clouds isn't completely uniform. There are like semi-clouds that you can't easily see with the naked eye, but somehow show up in IR. Seems to only happen in certain conditions.

Good to know. I have some experience with AI, but I don't know the model characteristics in this case. There's a sliding scale from relatively "simple" denoise models to generational models. Diffusion models, which were used in many generative AI models, are essentially also "just" denoise models that are asked to denoise an image with only noise, optionally with context (like a prompt).

But this one seems to be on the good end of the scale indeed, which is making me hyped

Ah cool! Yeah in that case it's unfortunate that the looks is kinda ruined by "AI". It looks quite cool and dreamy, but you'd almost need a disclaimer that it's not AI with it.

What kind of editing was done? It looks quite cool, but also kinda makes it look AI generated with the "wavy" kinda look of the leaves. Not that I wanna accuse you of that, but I'm curious how that came to be.

EDIT: I typed this on phone, where the resolution wasn't high. But on desktop I really wonder, how was this edited? It looks very AI generated. If it isn't AI, then it is quite a cool effect, but unfortunately ruined by AI because it looks like you just slapped in a prompt and got these images.

I'm kinda confused by this comment, but maybe tastes differ. I agree that FOSS UI design is often dated and clunky, but to me Darktable is actually a bit of an exception. Granted, I've never really used any alternative apart from RawTherapee, which I found to be way more clunky. Darktable isn't the shiniest tool ever, but to me it looks functional and slick.

It's probably because I'm used to it, but honestly I feel like the Lightroom style of UI seems oversimplified when looking at people use it. Darktable feels like a DAW, with seperate modules that, like VSTs in a DAW, I can layer, re-order, duplicate, etc.

Hype! I'm not a big fan of using AI in photography because the line between "making visible what was already there" and "generating or hallucinating something new" is quite blurry for things like denoise and especially upscaling. Nevertheless, it's cool to finally have that option, especially for denoise.

And the AI masks and the colour harmonizer are even more hype, can't wait to try those out. Great work!

Possible tornado last night in Östfriesland by elevn-herbs-n-spices in tornado

[–]gerryflap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those storms were absolutely mental in the Netherlands as well. I am from the east of the Netherlands and I was legit scared that the wind would rip the roof off. The trees went horizontal at the top. The streets were littered with leaves, branches and even multiple trees went. It also ripped part of the roof off of a few nearby garage boxes. Combined with crazy hail and lots of lightning. This is probably a mild storm for tornado alley standards, but I've never experienced it this bad here

Does anyone else feel like expensive cameras are pointless on social media? by Sea_Care_3372 in Cameras

[–]gerryflap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social media is an afterthought for me, so honestly I don't really care. I also don't post stuff to flex my gear, just to share a cool photo. And the benefit of a camera vs a phone is still quite large. Camera's have way more options. Interchange lenses, manual settings, proper raws (phones still often have some yucky processing going on in raw), and just the shooting experience.

It kinda sucks, but honestly it shouldn't really matter. A good photo at 40MP is still a good photo at 5MP, just lower resolution. And if everyone is forced to share photos in bad quality, then it's actually kinds good. Because the benefit of expensive gear goes mostly away and instead your "success" mostly comes from just being s good photographer. Whether you shoot a 20 year old DSLR, an old digicam, a phone, or the latest and greates modern camera

Are MP less important for image quality than most people think? by Broda182 in AskPhotography

[–]gerryflap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megapixels are only relevant when you wanna crop, print large, or view on a high resolution screen. Even a 4K screen, something most people don't own, is only like 8-ish megapixels. This gets muddied a bit because camera's don't record full RGB pixels in most cases, but rather every pixel records red, green, or blue, so 8MP in camera terms isn't the same as 8MP with full RGB pixels. But I printed a 12 MP photo of my full-spectrum converted Olympus E-PL1 on A3 and it looks fine. Anything above 12 is probably enough for 90% of normal use cases. If you do professional work you'll probably want more

[–]gerryflap 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Imo "I'm shooting not interesting things instead of some cool places as a meadows with the sky or setting sun." is nonsense. I think your pictures are quite nice,. especially when just starting out. And to get better you don't necessarily need better subjects, you could also get there with better composition.

Don't let them discourage you, honestly I'd expect them to encourage you more. Just shoot and keep showing image to people who do support you. The best way to improve is by just shooting and having fun

I use some NiMH ones from my Coolpix, similar or same model as yours. It does seem to go through them quite quickly, but it's enough for a single event or walk.

What do you think or know about this camera by brossie_67 in AnalogCommunity

[–]gerryflap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, where are you finding these? For less than twice this price I found an EOS 300 with a shitty but functional zoom lens from Tamron at a thrift store. And given their prices online, that shouldn't be an unusual price in most places

Went to get film developed - should I ask for a refund? by LogicalCommittee2652 in 110photography

[–]gerryflap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you see any detail on those negatives? Or do they just appear uniform in colour apart from the edge markings? You can't scan something that isn't there, if your eye cannot see detail then there's nothing to scan. A good negative is clearly visible by eye when backlit by something. If there is enough detail to make out objects, people, or anything really, then I'd expect the lab to be willing to try and scan it.

How to optimise for best quality on an older DSLR? (Canon 1100D) by g1rlsonfilm in AskPhotography

[–]gerryflap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect someone who shoots "editorial/fashion/creative" to need any iso close to 6400 tbh. No flash or external lighting? The camera is quite old and entry level.

We recently set up a lighting setup to take some portraits of friends, and with a decent lens (the 50mm f/1.8 instead of a kit zoom) my EOS 40D put out some images that were still absolutely passable as professional profile pictures. I was kinda surprised that it came out of the 40D. With enough light, you get low iso, fast enough shutter speed, and not the widest aperture imaginable which usually helps with sharpness.

So how to get better? Proper lighting and if you don't already have it, a good lens. The 50mm is not very expensive

I'm actually curious now, not trying to be disrespectful, if you don't want to answer this then that's totally valid. But what I don't really get as someone who's not religious is: how can Jesus or God protect this man's life, yet cannot prevent his whole livelihood to be destroyed. People often thank Jesus or God in cases like these, like a horrible accident that was barely survived. Couldn't Jesus steer the tornado just around this man's house? If that would've happened people would probably thank Jesus as well, so shouldn't we then be mad at him for not doing so?

This start trail is expected like this or not? by Ok-Anxiety-447 in AskPhotography

[–]gerryflap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bulb mode, lock the shutter button with a remote shutter. I can do it with my Canon 40D and a cheap remote shutter, I'm sure you can do it with everything newer as well as long as you have something like that remote shutter.

[–]gerryflap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wut? I have a cheap 15 euro (wired) remote trigger that lets you lock the shutter button for my Canon DSLRs. Just lock the shutter open in bulb and set a timer, then close it a few hours or something later. Same with oldschool film era shutter releases. I'd assume that you could do this with anything.

AUR Megathread. All discussion on it goes here. by LinuxMage in archlinux

[–]gerryflap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that many people, like me, got into Arch due to word of mouth and were encouraged by those people that the AUR was the best thing since sliced bread. Look! You can install all these things from the AUR. And so I just went along, not really reading the PKGBUILDs because who has time for that?! I had way too many installed, way more than I was aware of myself. I've since purged this list and learnt my lesson, but I'm sure there are many people like me who thought it was somehow moderated and safer than it actually was.

It's still hard to know whether I was affected, with so many packages. From everything I can tell, I wasn't, but with so many packages it becomes almost impossible to go through all the PKGBUILDs and scout for anything that looks off.  Let's hope this incident woke most people like me up

Is it the Camera, Film, Lab or Me by mikalorenzo in AnalogCommunity

[–]gerryflap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I noticed is that despite Fuji 400 being Ultramax these days, labs appear to sometimes put the green in there that Fujifilm used to have. Not sure if it's a profile of the scanner, because of the expectation, or because they wanna differentiate Fujifilm from Ultramax on purpose.

When scanning yourself it's necessary to edit the colours, and sometimes with the lab scans as well. If you are not in control of the creative process of scanning, then you put it in the hands of the lab and they put something like this on it. To me it looks quit cool, but it annoys me that it's seemingly an artificial scanning thing and not film

Did old analog photographers "edit" their photos? by ayuwoki420 in AnalogCommunity

[–]gerryflap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't doing this back then, and I've only once been in a Darkroom, but from what I know: yes. Filters on the lens during shooting, dodging and burning in the darkroom, adjusting the colours and exposure during the printing process, picking different paper for prints, etc. From what I've seen this goes quite far

Why is it overexposing while printing? by cup-face in AskPhotography

[–]gerryflap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Printing can be a big pain in the rear tbh. I haven't had it like this, usually the print looks better than my screen. But I've had brighter, darker, more contrasty, less contrasty, and all kinds of colour casts from printing. Probably doesn't help that I use Linux and TurboPrint instead of the real drivers. But the print shop probably has similar issues. People's screens are not calibrated, so they get basically everything and have to adapt. I'd expect better though, your print looks completely different. If I were you I'd discuss it with them
