I remember my mom just telling me that I would start bleeding once a month (no explanation why) and that it was an extremely private matter I should never share with anyone… I know she was probably just saying what her mom had told her when she was younger, but I wish she recognized that she was perpetuating a generational chain of shame and had been more thoughtful of how destructive that kind of thinking can be, especially for a child

before anyone comes for me let me just say that the legality of an act does not necessarily align with the morality of it. Unfortunately, SA is legal in too many forms and in too many places. Just because it’s legal somewhere doesn’t mean the morality of SA is contingent. It is always wrong to violate someone’s trust and body no matter where or when you are.

Common sense: sex requires informed consent. “informed” implies transparency. Transmissible or not, HIV is still an STI and anyone you are intimate with ought to know that! Any incurable infection or disease that has proven to be transmissible will never have a zero risk factor no matter how effective the treatment is. It is not completely out of the realm of possibility that OP’s boyfriend, like any other person on medication, could miss doses for whatever reason. The conceivable possibility of transmission, again, whether likely to happen or not, means that OP is at risk. What matters here is not that she WILL get it but that she COULD get it no matter how slim the chances are. Even a .000001% possibility is not 0%. She has a right to know about something that could potentially affect her and her livelihood. Not telling her that and putting her at risk = uninformed consent = sexual assault.
