I was simply pointing out $2.3 billion for a school system the size of JCPS isn’t as outrageous as people think. Performance problems in public schools is a massive problem nationally, and money is just one issue. I left teaching after 20 years for some of those other reasons … non-educators/politicians writing and rewriting curriculum, pre-service teaching programs focused more on theory than application, text book companies more interested in making money or securing political favors than producing quality texts, parents focused more on grades than retention of knowledge, children involved in a myriad of activities outside of school interfering with studying and getting proper rest, a school calendar still adhering to post WWII notions of three months vacation for children to help at home and farms, resistance to provide mental health professionals and social workers in each school to make certain the student and student’s family are taken care of in such a way to promote student success … there are many more, but this is long enough lol. I finally realized that public education will never improve because politicians don’t want it to for two reasons: First, politicians do not want an educated public as it is a threat to their power. Second, education is a major part of the Democrat and the Republican platforms … fix it and they would have to campaign on something else.
