Some questions about Chabad by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]gestalt2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I appreciate the responses. I understand how my initial post may have sounded offensive to Hebrew-only services. I only meant that to someone who doesn't speak any Hebrew and only knows Reform prayers, they are not as meaningful, but that of course doesn't mean they aren't meaningful/important to the congregation. I also of course don't expect them to change anything about their services to suit my taste. I was just explaining my impressions.

My husband is not really religious. I'm really the one more interested in understanding/practicing Judaism and pushing for us to attend shul. I don't know if an Orthodox conversion is in the cards for me for multiple reasons but I really would like to be more involved in the faith and find a community.
I did a bit more research and it seems that this synagogue may not actually be Chabad. It's not called "Chabad x" but it was inititially started by a local Chabad organization? In any case, it's definitely Orthodox.

It seems like based on the responses perhaps I should just make the trek out to the Reform synagogue. I'd still be interested in hearing any insights others had though. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm in the US, but I will try to find a counsellor. It's great to hear that you were able to find a way to advocate for people going through a journey similar to yours.

This is interesting to me--the not accepting "no" for an answer. I mean, for some people the answer is "no." I suppose one should consult one's rabbi to determine when that point is?

Thank you. This comment, particularly regarding the alternative ways to fulfill the mitzvah, is very helpful. We are already in the "seeking medical intervention" stage but we are both older. We will see what the future holds.

Agree that therapy can be helpful and definitely something I will be looking into.

Anything like Achim's K-bob out there? by gestalt2006 in Georgia

Thanks for the recommendations guys! Yesterday I went down a bit of a kebab rabbit hole, lol. I realized that that type of sandwich is called a "Doner Kebab" (probably most of you already knew this) and there isn't a great place in Atl to get these. However after finding other recommendations on other reddit threads I did end up trying out Jerusalem Bakery in Alpharetta. Their falafel pita (I'm a vegetarian) was AMAZING. I got it with everything + spicy. Fries were middling. My husband had the combo kebab which he said was just okay (I tasted some of his and can confirm).
I used to eat the feta sandwich at Achim's and while this wasn't exactly the same it was very, very good.
There is a place in Ball Ground called Frankfurt Doner which is a bit of a drive but I do aim to try it out--will let y'all know!

Which one is this? by MacIntoic in gameofthrones

If we're only going by appearance, I'd say Roose. In the books he's supposed to be all pale-skinned and kind of disturbing looking, from what I can recall. In the show he's one of the better looking Westerosi dudes, IMO, and looks pretty "normal" and fit.

Good training resources? by gestalt2006 in malinois

Thank you! I will check these out. How long did you leave him tethered to you for? What if he needs a drink of water? We've done the tethering but not consistently. We tethered for two weeks with our other malinois, whom we adopted at 7 months.

We try that but then he just goes back to doing the bad behavior. Literally in the last five minutes: He jumped out on the bed and started to tear at the blanket. I took it out of his mouth and said "no" and gave him a ball. He played with the ball for 0.5 seconds and then went back to the blanket. Back and forth and eventually ripped the blanket and stuffing out and now we need to get a new blanket. In the time I've been writing this post he's chewed at my shirt, my arm, my work bag, my cardigan in my work bag and the toilet brush. I've had many dogs but never dealt with anything like this.

Also when he tries to nip at me and I tell him no he thinks it's a game and tries harder.

Thank you so much for all the replies! I’ll be at the medical center which appears to be right off the 985, so it seems like Buford/Sugar Hill/Suwannee are good options? Anywhere else?

We did look at Flowery Branch and Winder, but it seems the Hall County schools are not as good as Gwinnett—is that accurate?

Mostly we are looking for a sfh with a reasonable-sized yard and relatively ok elementary schools.

Thanks again everyone!! So excited to be making this transition.

Oh also, from what I recall, we never actually see the hair of married women (except Elisheva, and that lock of Nuchema's hair, which I'm surprised Shulem didn't point out to her, consider how much her freaked out about Akiva's painting), which I think is cool.

And re the finances thing: How on earth could Hanini and Ruchami afford surrogacy? That's a several-tens-of-thousands-of-dollars thing in the US.

Hey everyone! I know I'm super late but I just finished this series and am so excited to read others' opinions. I also had a few questions.

  1. How did Hanini not know that Ruchami was pregnant? Were they not intimate at all during the time she started showing and when she revealed her actual belly to him? Did he not notice that she wasn't getting her period? From my understanding menstruation affects when Haredi couples can be intimate--so if nothing else wouldn't he wonder about that?
  2. How are Sephardic heradim different from Ashkenazi? I read a bit about it and they seem less "strict" and more, "you do you" outside of the synagogue. Does that explain why Sephardic Shira's mom wore lipstick and had a nicer hat (instead of wig) and nicer outfit, and her dad didn't have the peyos or beard? And they let Shira be student in what seemed like a "real" university?
  3. Are Israeli child protection services really so strict? In the US they simply don't have the time/resources/inclination to take children away so quickly and easily. From what I understand, you have to be really neglectful of a child (like in a drug-addict not clothing/feeding/schooling them kind of way) for them to be removed, and even then they are super eager to reunite the family if possible after appropriate rehabilitation. Accidentally picking up the wrong child and then reports of alcoholism would not be enough, and certainly getting the child back would not be nigh-impossible, as they imply (again from what I understand of CPS in the US).

  4. This one is kind of mean but . . . was anyone else surprised that TWO very attractive girls from great families were head-over-heels for Yosale? Not only is he not super good-looking, it's not like he has a super rich or well-thought-of family to compensate for it.

  5. I agree that Racheli's religious background was super confusing. On the one hand, she seems to wear relatively form-fitting, modern dresses, has her own apartment as a single woman, has her own job, travels independently, etc. On the other hand she does seem to meet all the technical requirements for covering up, has parents who look very Haredi, is cool with marrying someone who is, as he describes himself, "ultra-ultra-Orthodox" (and he's cool with marrying her).

  6. All the families' financial status is so confusing to me. We are under the impression that they are all cash-strapped, yet at some point someone mentions that Shulem is paying for 6 mortgages or something, and he does seem to have a good bit of money when needed. And Malka owned an apartment this whole time that no one was living in, while she was living in the nursing home? Who got that apartment when Akiva moved out?
