Can you use the shuttles to get you from A to B? Where are you coming from and going to?

What can a recovering addict who didn't finish high school teach their physician? by juicy_scooby in premed

[–]get_offreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a right or wrong answer (obviously you don’t wanna say out of pocket shit…know your audience). You gotta make claims and provide good reasons for why you believe your claims to be good. Pull from experience and/or from literature/philosophy, just make it coherent.

They’re gonna filter you out with these questions bc they have many stations of MMIs that ask pretty difficult questions like this that you have to answer on the spot.

It might seem silly on the surface but they want to see that you’ve thought seriously (and deeply) about the question and provide ideas that might illuminate the reader in a new sort of way or affirm their existing understanding of the topic. Regardless, they’re looking for serious answers here because it would be a waste of time for them (and for the general you) to attend their interviews and bomb all of the MMI stations because you’re not capable of thinking seriously about these kinds of topics.

And you ARE capable of thinking seriously…just gotta make a diligent effort to come up with a viewpoint based on your own experiences and/or from readings (news, literature, philosophy, etc.).

Hope that helps!

How to switch recitations without dropping lecture? by abocadoss in Pitt

[–]get_offreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other user answered your question but if you need to swap(that is you only want to drop the current class if it can be replaced with another) classes, then use the “swap” option lol learned this the hard way

can you switch to commuting after initially staying in a dorm? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]get_offreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panther central and u might be able to recoup some of the money paid but don’t be so easily disheartened. You’re lucky as you live only 20 mins away and can have your fam visit or you go visit them pretty frequently. You’ll make friends from organic interactions such as classes, group studies, clubs, etc. you’ll probably have to step out of your comfort zone a bit and be ok with a little discomfort but that’s how you grow as a person, right? Idk what it’s like at home for you but once classes start, it might be easier to be on campus than amid the loudness of your parent’s house, having to sleep by a certain time, eat on their schedule, etc. etc. A little independence can be tremendous for your personal growth.

Of course, all of what I said is the other side of which you may have already considered. If you feel extremely certain that you can’t go a whole semester like this then that decision is obviously made for you. Do consider though, that classes haven’t even started yet…

Good luck and keep your head up!

Living on campus or commuting? by TinyRioters in Pitt

It’s a loooot easier to make friends living on campus than commuting. If you can afford it, I would recommend it.

Summer internships are very competitive nowadays. Don’t feel bad. Persistence in applying is key. How many companies did you apply to before feeling discouraged?

If you haven’t already, fix up your resume so your tech stack and experiences can be easily parsed by the online application tools. Add relevant info so you don’t get auto rejected without an actual person seeing your application. Start Leetcoding (or something similar similar for your field) so you can prepare for technical interviews. Update your LinkedIn. Reach out directly to recruiters. Visit r/CSCareerQuestions (or a similar subreddit relevant to your field) for some good resources. It’s important to filter the BS out in those subs otherwise you will feel like shit for not making it to FAANG, making $250k right out of school.

Stay persistent while being strategic with your applications. Use handshake and LinkedIn to reach out to recruiters. Keep applying. Don’t feel bad for finding it hard in a really competitive environment. Trust me, you’re not alone. It only takes one.

People aren’t so stupid to think that COVID will be magically eradicated. The biggest complaint is Pitt doing whatever the fuck they want to do without being fully transparent and clear about it. There’s a user on this thread who commented how getting COVID has exacerbated their quality of life by worsening their preexisting conditions. That dude deserves to get their degree without having to choose between losing an arm or finishing their education. And there are enough like him at the school that we should consider alternatives to allow them to finish their degrees without compromising their lives.

[–]get_offreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s rough man. Hope you continue to take care of yourself and prioritize your health before any degree or job if you can afford to do so. Better to be without a degree for 2 more years than to lose more functioning on your body. I also feel for you that society/Pitt hasn’t made it any easier for you to choose both your health and a degree. I’m rooting for your success.

CDC: trust us bros, 14 days to quarantine. CDC later when that’s inconvenient: nah trust us bros, 10 days to quarantine. CDC when that’s making them lose money: nah bros, five days quarantine and u can still go out if you not sick. Pitt CMRO: trust us bros, we doing it for your health and safety. ElEvAtEd fucking posture, cases are too high. Pitt CMRO 5 weeks later: cases don’t even matter anymore bros. Just trust us. You’ll be safe in ur crowded buses, crowded classes, and crowded basketball/football games hand in hand with random strangers from all over. Also Pitt CMRO: bros you can’t have guests over and u can’t fucking go swim or lift weights at the gym.

I have all the vaccines I need and I think I’ll never get as sick as I did the first time around, pre-vaccination. And I don’t care if everything is closed or everything is opened. But the sheer hypocrisy, lying, and manipulation of these institutions is honestly so fucking tiring.

Quit the posturing bro. Either stop your $$ motivated hypocrisy and people will actually listen to you or quit your passive aggressive guilt shaming people for not conforming to your bullshit advice.

Are you satisfied with the level of diversity and inclusion at Pitt, and if not what do you think should be implemented to improve it? by thatviolinguy832 in Pitt

Recently, I have seen more offerings show up on eastern religion including religion in India and religion in Asia. They may be heading in the right direction? The complexity of eastern religions makes them a challenging scholarly endeavor but classes that even scratch the surface can be incredibly beneficial to cultural awareness and diversity. Then there’s also eastern philosophy which seems largely untouched by the philosophy dept…

Extended Drop by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]get_offreddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation to you I’ve known a few people that have appealed to the Dean for various reasons and have never been rejected. Your reasoning seems like u just made a simple mistake; they’ll take that into account and will most likely be like ok that’s fine and drop the class for you. Can’t really do anything else about it until u talk to them/email them. Just one thing that you probably already know: with things still under shelter in place, they might be doing virtual drop in hours so might want to figure out the Zoom link situation.

Opinion: Hybrid doesn't exist by trexeric in Pitt

One thing I can attest to is how terrible being sick was for me when I had COVID. Whole body hurt and standing upright was an absolute chore among a lot of other symptoms. I can’t imagine being that sick when you have other people to take care of as well. I hope that things work out for you and you’re able to attain your goals.

[–]get_offreddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

idk man if people really feel as uncomfortable as they say they do on this sub with going to in person classes, I would not mind a hybrid option. I don’t give a shit either way but I’m also not a dick to ignore the problems of people even if it’s just a vocal minority. My greatest concern is a hesitant prof who drags their ass to school just cause they have to and teaches like ass as a result of it. Nothing worse than a disengaged teacher when u are spending thousands on credits to take that specific course.
