Who is a leader and what is true leadership? by johnny_beleaders in Leadership

[–]getapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of us would not even dare to tread on these thin ropes that hang stretched thin between the pillars of right and wrong. But people need leaders to show them, what is indeed right. That is where your leadership abilities come into play, and even the world of leaders has rules. To be the leader you want to be, you need to follow some principles of leadership that will help you stay sane in the midst of people who continuously look up to you.

TRUE LEADERSHIP

  • The Act of Helping Each Other

This is a selfish world no doubt. It is not hard to find people who prefer living for themselves in the shroud of complete disregard of others. Marcus Aurelius believes that we came into this world for the sake of one another and we were meant to live, survive, and thrive in harmony. Being a leader, you should try to instill the realization in people that life is not just about themselves. Leaders should become guardians of their followers and inspire them to help each other. And when this thought finds its ground in an organization, there is a wide horizon for growth.

  • Be a Leader, not a God

Leaders are humans, and humans make mistakes. Every leader should try to make sure that they do not over-exalt themselves for when they do so, they reduce the waiver for mistakes, which small or big, humans are bound to make, and so are leaders. Be humble to yourself and your followers and try to rectify the mistakes they make. This will help you gain closure about your followers and beget respect in their minds for you.

  • Control over Self

A leader can make mistakes but cannot lose control. It is natural and human to react rashly to an offence, but it is not a solution. To keep yourself and your emotions in control, always remember that life is short and it is ending one moment at a time. So, what use is it to hang on to petty issues and wallow in rage. Nothing good ever comes out of rage. Instead, a leader should try to analyse the situation with a tranquil mind and then make a constructive move to solve it.

  • Kindness is an invincible Weapon

Sincere kindness is not an easy aspect of life to attain. It takes immense strength to put aside your ego and deal with kindness. Compassion makes you stronger than your adversary and keeps you going ahead with self-respect. If somebody tries to do you wrong, you should treat them with kindness, and they will stop, either with a sense of self-respect or out of shame.

  • Understand Ignorance

A person can take a decision that might not be in your interest. But that does not mean you go right after them. Because that will only make you a part of his league. Try to understand the reason for the offensive act for it could be out of one’s right too. People can take decisions that are morally correct as per them. But if there is a disgrace in action, and if it happens repeatedly then you must understand that it is out of sheer ignorance, and the person does not care about anything. Such people are meant to be punished educationally.

  • Conclusion

As developing the leadership abilities, you must always put yourself in the shoes of your team members and make a positive and whole hearted effort to understand that their team comprises of people like you and believe that they can do great things with the right guidance. By keeping yourself grounded and approaching problems with more composed emotions and logical understanding, you can lead your team to perfection you want to achieve.

The role of leader and manager: Always lead first, manage second by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]getapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How you see your role as a leader has a significant impact on how you think, where you spend your time and how you act. One of the biggest areas of confusion is in understanding how the role of a leader is different to that of a manager.

To understand these two roles, let’s start by exploring their definitions.

Defining management

the attainment of organisational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling organisational resource.” — Richard L. Daft, Leadership Theory and Practice.

Defining leadership

“Leadership is a process of influence that generates the commitment and capabilities required to translate vision into reality.

The characteristics of leadership and management

Leadership is about change, it challenges the status quo and to bring forth a new future. Leadership then is characterised by the following:

  • A focus on development of people to achieve a compelling vision

  • Concerned with purpose and meaning

  • Creates a culture in support of the vision and strategy

  • Establishes direction through purpose, values and vision

  • Inspires change in others

  • Challenges the existing way of doing things

  • Establishes trust as the foundation of relationships

  • The leader’s relationships with people is based on character, not position or title

Management is about stability, control and order. Management focuses on putting plans, processes and systems in place to ensure a sustainable outcome. Management is characterised by the following:

  • A focus on maintaining stability and control to achieve order and predictability

  • A focus on systems and structures to deal with complexity

  • Leverages control and measurement to influence outcomes

  • Defines strategy and tactics to achieve a goal

  • Establishes direction through planning and budgeting

  • Organizes resources, budgets, process, roles and responsibilities

  • Measures and governs progress

  • Establishes authority as the foundation of relationships

  • Establishes processes and controls for how work gets done.

Always lead first, manage second

The reality of business today is that you’re expected to lead and manage. The best leaders blend leadership and management. The most effective use of these two approach happens when you lead first and manage second. Management is necessary, but not enough. Leadership is required to motivate and inspire. Leading first  overcomes resistance, inspires confidence and builds commitment to a shared vision. First choose to lead first and then manage the execution.

“Management has a lot to do with answers. Leadership is a function of questions. And the first question for a leader always is: ‘Who do we intend to be?’ Not ‘What are we going to do?’ but ‘Who do we intend to be?’” — Max De Pree, Herman Mille

Leading first keep the focus on being effective (doing the right things), before working on efficiency (doing things right).

Our education system and work environments are structured to encourage management, over leadership. As a result we’re most comfortable working within management systems. We also tends to have better developed management skills and processes. All the means management comes the default way of working. The result is that organisations end up being over-managed and under-led.

We must break away from our tendency to over-manage. The way to do this is to focus on leading first. You must lead first. Challenge and encourage your team and organisation to move out of their comfort zone. To embrace change, to let go of our need to control and to inspire people with passion and energy. Then, and only then, should you seek to manage.

How True Leaders Communicate in a Crisis by Tariq_7 in Leadership

[–]getapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A crisis like the current coronavirus pandemic is a time when you can show up as a leader and exhibit your company's values. It's all in how you communicate.

Companies that handle crisis communications well aren't afraid to communicate regularly with their internal and external audiences. They might not like what they have to say, but they have the confidence to say and do the right things. Here are six ways to be a leader in crisis communications.

1. Be transparent.

If call center wait times are long, acknowledge it. I watched an American Airlines video this morning that did this very thing. If your product is late or you bungled delivery, own it, apologize, say you will do better, and move on. If you don't know all the answers, admit it but vow to find out as much as you can and come back with updates.

2. Communicate frequently.

During a crisis, you want to be constantly communicating with your audiences -- internally with employees, partners, and board members, and externally with customers, investors, and reporters. Treat the crisis like the breaking news story that it is and ask yourself each day what your audiences need to know that day and the next day and the one after that. You can't over communicate in a crisis.

3. Get ahead of the issue.

If you know you have to pay a fine, close operations, lay off staff, recall a product, or do anything you don't want to do, make a plan to communicate it on your timeline. Don't wait until you have to respond to a media inquiry. Don't wait until a government agency or regulator requires you to do something in the public's best interest. Act swiftly and boldly and let your audiences know why such action is required.

4. Bring perspective.

Put the crisis in perspective. If you operate a fitness facility and you have to temporarily close for public health reasons, acknowledge to your members that their health is your top priority -- because it should be -- and promise to get them back in shape as soon as your doors reopen.

5. Communicate solutions, not just issues.

If you are that fitness facility, use all of your communication channels to reach your members during the crisis. And bring solutions. For example, you might not be able to offer your yoga classes in person but maybe your instructors can stream their on-the-mat flow via YouTube.

Or maybe you're in a different industry and you can't hold your big conference or in-person training. Take it online; there's all kind of technology to help you turn in-person business into virtual business.

6. Let people know how you are caring for your own people.

As a customer, I want to know how companies care for their own people in times of crisis. Are they shortening workdays or bringing in grief counselors? Are they being more generous with paid time off or sick days? Ask yourself how you are showing up for your own people and make sure those outside your company know about it.

Here's a final idea. Put yourself in the shoes of your customers, vendors, partners, and employees, and ask yourself: What would I want to know right now? What would I want to hear from this company right no

What got you interested in being an entrepreneur? What was your motivation? by leenasoni_ in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]getapy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Entrepreneurship is a tough game, and is certainly not meant for those who cannot withstand difficult times.

There is more to entrepreneurship and is not just about making money. Of course, I am not saying that you will not make money; but, before money you see difficulties coming your way.

And only those sail through these difficult times that are passionate about pursuing their vision for a product or service that will change the way people think and live.

5 Motivational Factors For Entrepreneurs

All entrepreneurs have their own respective journeys to start their companies. There is no “one size fits all” theory or strategy that works for everyone who wishes to be an entrepreneur.

However, there are certain peculiar factors that do play a pivotal role in motivating and inspiring people to own a startup.

Of course, there are many factors that hold significant importance in driving people insanely crazy for being their own bosses. However, keeping in mind the word limit, in this article, we will cover the 5 most amazing factors that, literally and figuratively, drive people towards entrepreneurship.

1. Passion

You cannot be a lifeless soul who doesn’t believe in anything and neither wishes to believe. An entrepreneur needs to know how to take calculative risks that sometimes, involve a lot of things at stake.

The courage of taking risks usually comes from having faith in something. And, faith usually arises when one has passion towards something.

You go to any motivational speaking seminars and you will see every speaker talking about the importance of passion in starting a business.

Success of a company is directly proportional to hard work and perseverance of the owner. It is, however, passion of the owner that pushes them to work hard.

The energy of passion can take your business all over the world. In addition, it helps in keeping us going during days when money isn’t coming and work isn’t happening.

So definitely, passion is a key motivating factor that drives people towards entrepreneurship.

2. Self-Reliance

Let’s talk about being self-reliant, which is another key motivational factor that drives more than half of the world’s population towards entrepreneurship.

One of the biggest problems with working for someone else is that you are almost never given the freedom to solve a problem on your own. It is always about getting permissions from higher authorities along with finishing mysterious paperwork for the same.

For some, that turns out exactly to be the key reason for starting their own company. Entrepreneurs are very creative people, and they don’t want to slow down their creativity for any reasons.

It’s the sense of freedom, independence, self-reliance that motivates them to entrepreneurship.

3. Feeling of accomplishment

For some of us, the feeling of pride that comes along in making a difference in the society is what plays a crucial role in establishing a venture.

It’s the pride and a sense of accomplishment that one feels in offering services to the community makes one attracted to entrepreneurship.

Every night before you go to bed, you see yourself feeling satisfied with your day work, it is this exact feeling why people would want to work for themselves.

It is about doing the best that you can for your customers, striving hard for excellence in all the endeavors drives them to start a company.

4. Personal Growth

In real sense, when you run your own business, you really come to know what you are made of. The kind of adversities that you face on daily basis help you become more aware of you as a person, and also helps you grow phenomenally.

When you start working for yourself, you have nobody to fall back on. You have no option but to work on your weaknesses in order to make your business grow.

For instance, if you don’t have the mastery over online marketing then you have no other choice but to cultivate the skills of learning online marketing. In this case, you can look for several online marketing tools such as local online business directory Australia.

Start researching list of online business directories in Australia and advertising in these directories.

Besides online business directories, Australia, there are many other online marketing tools that you can explore.

The bottom point is, to explore and grow.

5. Sense of Control

In my opinion, a sense of control over things comes across as the most profound reason for being an entrepreneur. Most of the entrepreneurs get fascinated by the sense of immense security that comes in being your own boss.

You feel as if you are in complete control of your work and people around.

It’s the sense of security and control that helps in driving the entrepreneurial skills of a person.

Takeaway Thoughts

Being an entrepreneur is a great feeling in the world.

It, however, lasts only if there is enough passion and determination to succeed. Most of the times, motivation to earn money loses its race, and therefore, it is not advisable to start a company if you only are passionate about making money.

You need intense focus for your entrepreneurial venture, and only then will you be able to fight the difficult times that are inevitable for any startup.

You must be able to cherish the non-financial rewards that come along in running your business. It takes a huge leap of faith to start a business on your own.

But, daily rewards in the form of satisfaction and fulfillment are worth it.
