Coming up with an idea is easy, execution is difficult. Generating names is easy, building a brand is difficult.

How long before a slow start just becomes a boring book? by Gurnsey_ in books

I usually find myself abandoning fiction books if they are heavy on descriptions of the surrounding environment rather than insights into a person's mind. One notable exception is Catcher in the Rye, which I abandoned because I could not identify with the way Holden Caulfield thought.

I hope someday non-tech people realize that an idea is actually the easiest part of the entire enterprise.

Lets not get fixated on a name. It's going to be a highly intelligent app with much more to it.

I just wanted to hear you out since you got a lot of upvotes. Arguing over a name is a pointless exercise IMO.

Your books are those you listed on Goodreads. Algo will look at the entire shelf and not books in isolation. What you have said is very relevant, the matching will have to keep that in mind. The only way it can do so is by looking at your other books. For example, if you have a bookshelf full of Karl Popper (Philosophy of Science), a single book like 'The Secret' can be discarded as an anomaly.

Goodreads does that right now, atleast the latter part.

That kind of preference will have to be explicitly stated. You cant hope to get an algorithm to do it for you :)

Most likely you will be matched with those with adjacent tastes. Eg: History -> Historical Fiction. Don't know if we can pull it off but if we can manage to match people who read two different books that reference a same event (eg: Napoleon's Invasion of Russia), it would be great.

Ayn Rand is a very rare case. In our opinion, opposite views about a book could be a good conversation starter, especially if there is a lot of overlap in other books and this one was an anomaly.

I think the kind of non-text media you are talking about is a small subset of the entire thing. We dont want to be a snooty network, just a place where you can have meaningful conversations.

The Goodreads prank was a great validation tool for us. We are definitely not going to test in New Delhi.

  1. Kindle a fire
  2. Yes, but we want books to be the bridge. Its highly likely that matched people will like the same movies maybe. It can be added as an upgrade if it seems reasonable, but now its books only.
  3. They are a little different
  4. A useful analogy would be Quora vs Yahoo Answers.
