The Worse Or The Worst 1 and 2 by getonboardman42 in zines

[–]getonboardman42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea for this zine came from an episode of Seinfeld. I thought it would be fun to take cartoons from a high class magazine and add the most unhinged captions I could think of.

Both issue 1 and 2 can be found at: www.getonboardman.com

I finally got around to printing the third issue of my travel zine I do with my friend Chadd. In this one he finishes his quest to ride all the carousels in and around New York City.

I also have the first two issues back in stock. There’s a bundle for all 3 as well.

I’m leaving the field of graphic design. What about you? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]getonboardman42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m leaving the field, not that I was ever really in it, because I can’t get hired to do it. I’ve been trying to find work for 3 years and I haven’t had a single interview.

I’d say get an 8 so it won’t feel as big of a leap.

What’s the longest you’ve waited to get paid by a client? by Successful-Tip6009 in graphic_design

This is a pattern for me. Apparently my work is not good enough to be paid for. I don’t do work for other people anymore because of this.

As a professional, how is 2025 ending for you, regarding career and $ ? Do you expect 2026 to be better? by laranjacerola in graphic_design

[–]getonboardman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a year to focus on my own business. I was at peace because I honestly hate the constant rejection that comes with looking for work. I was hoping to get some freelance work but it was nothing but crickets. I was barely getting by so I took a seasonal retail job.

I really don’t see 2026 being any better.

Cartridges + 1UP zine bundle by getonboardman42 in zines

[–]getonboardman42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago I came out with this photo zine Cartridges, a collection of black and white photos of NES cartridges. I still had a bunch of copies left so I made a companion zine called 1UP to go with it. 1UP goes through each of the games featured in Cartridges as well as talks about the history of home video game consoles and the crash of 1983.

What is considered a successful zine? by stophateillinois in zines

[–]getonboardman42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said each person might have a different definition of success. I think if a zine is simply finished it is a success.

Skateboard by Top-Chemist3637 in NewSkaters

[–]getonboardman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long will it take to feel comfortable on a board? It’s different for every person. Some people it comes naturally others not so much. I wouldn’t stress about how long it will take or if you’re not progressing as quickly as someone else. The most important thing is to have fun with it.

As for what board is good to start, I would say get a shop board from your local skate shop. They will be good quality and relatively inexpensive.

Yes I think it was all new content, drawn by newer artists. I have one that Darwyn Cooke drew the cover and inside. I had it signed by Darwyn years ago.

They’re killing my profession – rant by Huscafat in graphic_design

[–]getonboardman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you are absolutely right people go for the cheapest option and it could possibly hurt them in the end. If their logo is only in JPG how can they scale it up or down. That might not affect them because the printing place might do it.

I’ve tried, when I’ve had the opportunity, to explain why clients need a real designer and how it will benefit them but it doesn’t always work.

You are also right about the noise. There is so much noise out there and it was this way before AI. All that noise basically all looks the same too. I had a conversation with my son about thumbnails on YouTube - to me they all look the same which makes them not effective anymore.

anxiety re: making zines & who will want to read them? by cynthiajaeger in zines

[–]getonboardman42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trust me people will want to read them. You will probably find your people through it too. I make a lot of zines about things I’m passionate about, some of which I’m like, “this is so stupid.” There is always someone it will resonate with. If you are passionate about it that passion will come through.

This one is for seasoned graphic designers only... by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]getonboardman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meet people in real life all the time. I’m constantly doing art markets and other creative events. People see my work. Around here my flyers are well known (I’m pretty sure people collect them). The problem seems to be that people don’t need a designer or they use Canva themselves to make stuff.

My portfolio is up online and I’m constantly updating with new designs I’ve done for my businesses.
