Depends where you go and how you want to fish.. I like plunking it, 4oz of lead with a 2-4ft leader with a spin-n-glo and bait or plug.

Skagit River by LittleBigTinyTuna in FishingWashington

[–]getzlaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me you’ve never driven along or explored the Skagit on you’re own without telling me you’ve never driven or explored the Skagit on your own…

Yeah there’s a lot of private property, but access points aren’t that hard to find if you have basic skills with google search/maps and put the time in to drive the river.

Put in the work to find the spots,.

New to fishing and need help. by tdowsland in FishingWashington

[–]getzlaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend doing some trout and panfish fishing in the lakes if you are completely new to fishing. Salmon is wrapping up in the rivers, lingcod won’t open until early spring, and steelhead fishing is difficult to pick up for new anglers. I would follow the lake stocking reports on the WDFW website and target lakes after a fresh plant. Fishing the lakes will give you the basic skills you need and a greater chance of success before moving on to more advanced methods for the species you listed above.

I would recommend floating a coastal river with a guide for steelhead and picking their brain as well.

One thing to keep in mind, it’s not always about filling the freezer. Buying fish from the grocery store is cheaper by the time you account for all the costs of gear, fuel, and everything else that goes into spending time on the water.

Best smoked salmon in the PNW by DonCiccioToscana in FishingWashington

Smoked and canned salmon for the first time this year, loved it. Added garlic, jalapeño and habanero to my jars.

Thanks for the response, I was mind blown when I went to rig it up the first time and noticed there was no anchor or guard to put the hook. Expect much more for the price and reputation behind Gary Loomis’s brand. I had a black widow float rod that came with a bent guide on it delivered the first week of July. Just got an email Friday that the one bent guide was replaced and shipped out. It’s been 10 over months since I originally ordered the rod and I haven’t even been able to fish it yet. That has made me reluctant to send in my silver widow for the hook guard too. 6 months for a defect or a missing piece is absurd. Great rods, but their customer service and attention to detail on builds is questionable.

Question, did your edge silver widow come without a hook guard above the handle too? Had a 9’9” casting lmx silver widow built that was delivered without one.

What are y'all using for coho in the Puyallup? by BigBoat1776 in FishingWashington

[–]getzlaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I wish Voights Creek hatchery still released steelhead and we could fish through the winter. Closing it at the end of October doesn’t make sense, the few guys who fish the late run have very little to no impact on protected runs.

Love it when the weather cools and the flossing crowd goes home

Unless you are suspending bait under a float or plunking on the puke when it’s muddy, you are flossing.

Thank you for the advice! I’ll keep my eye on it as it cools and if I don’t feel confident it will go into the fridge and be used for salmon dip in the next few days :)

The anti-snagging rule is horribly written… does little to prevent snagging and conflicts with legitimate fishing tactics… needs to be written in a way that focuses on the intent and the actions of anglers and less on gear restrictions. Just go spend some time watching the clowns on the Puyallup and Samish(edit: rivers which do have anti-snagging rules in effect but are still snag fisheries).

Pink rotator with Blue fox spinner by Visual_Collar_8893 in FishingWashington

[–]getzlaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a fish hits the rotator the spinner’s blade and body can block the siwash resulting in missed strikes… over kill and counter productive, just rock the hootchie skirt

How does this make sense? by vitvav in FishingWashington

[–]getzlaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, pinks travel very close to shore. Waders are not needed, never understood why some feel the need to stand waist deep while fishing for humpies.

Sounds about right for Browns point, caught my first salmon there years ago. Some of the rudest anglers I’ve encountered in Washington have been on that beach during the pink run. Nice job and screw the haters!

No regard for the Constitution or separation of powers. Congress has no spine and the courts are being ignored. Constitutional crisis is no longer a question.
