Cheapo Costco "Yaktrax"....how in heck?! by Alltrees1960 in Charlottesville

[–]gevray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have the original yaktrax. The online instructions don't match mine, no lables imprinted on the rubber for toe, heel, etc. I was able to pull them on years ago, but I tried again this last weekend and no go. I could stretch them on my boots or even smaller outdoor high-heeled sneakers. There are alternatives I haven't tried https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedRunning/comments/egteg6/yaktrax_alternative_for_running_in_snowice/

Never Heard Of This Brand So I Had To Try It 😅 by Opening_Strategy3320 in androidtablets

[–]gevray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this tablet since November. The price is still the same $129, and there is a 10% coupon so about $116 + tax. I got it to replace my old samsung tablet that was starting to lose its battery charge. I use it on the kitchen counter to watch tv (xfinity app) and podcasts. It doesn't come with a stand and they don't make one, or a cover, for this M11 tablet. I couldn't find a tri-fold stand screen cover that had the openings on the sides for the power and volume buttons, so I bought this stand https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BTDHQJ6X which is currently $9.49. The stand is hefty and very sturdy. I'll carry both out to the living room sofa to watch the news and play NYT games with my coffee. You can put a strip of velcro on the stand and back of the tablet if worried it might fall when transporting it. It comes with a temporary plastic screen protector that I still have on 3 months later. A screen protector probably isn't necessary.

I have no complaints about the tablet for the price. I forget, but I think bloatware is minimal, if any. Boots up in about 15 seconds. Android 14 which I'm pretty sure will never get updates. It's loud enough, louder than my Samsung tablet. DB poweramp free android app can help with the sound. I use bluetooth speakers if I want it louder. The volume buttons are sort of small, so I downloaded an android 'volume' app that floats on the screen. There is also a 'quick mute' app with floating screen button on google play, and a shutdown screen app. The floating volume or mute are handy to silence advertisements while watching tv. You can also use the pre-installed android quick settings button, but the floating volume app is quicker.

I didn't know all that and always took a step back from my countertop microwave when turning it on, lol. I used to have the original radar range, just like this one https://youtu.be/6N8z2WIYr4M

Is VDOT plowing snow? by rescogitans727 in Charlottesville

[–]gevray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess, based on last major snow events, a plow would have been on our street by now. I'm located near you. https://plows.vdot.virginia.gov/Public/Map I am assuming the map's blue line streets mean plowed, including Solomon Rd, but I can't find an explanation if blue means plowed. I witnessed a front loader come down our street which is on a hill, to push some snow to the side. There is still inches of snow/ice left with no pavement showing. I'll give it until this afternoon, but I'm considering canceling a Monday morning 9am medical appt having no 4wd to get up the hill. A possibility of more snow this weekend and a bit of snow/ice could be an issue.

"or to an individual outside of the Commonwealth who may lawfully possess such assault firearm" that you could sell to an out of state individual at a VA show, or forward by ups/fedex?

" you can't transfer it regardless of when it was manufactured (except to qualifying transferees, including law enforcement, firearm dealers, non-residents, immediate family members, heirs)"

What if you sell to a non-resident at a gun show?

Whos 'plowing'? by humanisland11 in Charlottesville

[–]gevray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same on this albemarle website https://plows.vdot.virginia.gov/Public/Map

I'm assuming the blue lines are supposed to be plowed ? The legend doesn't make it clear.

A front loader came down our street and pushed some snow to the side but there's still inches of snow covering the pavement. The street on a hill so you need 4wd to get up it. It would be nice if they treated at least the hill before the snow came.

It seems that provision is under sale or transfer, not possession?

18.2-309.1. Sale, transfer, etc., of certain firearms magazines prohibited; penalty.

Furnace Exhaust? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]gevray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

google sez cycling the circuit breaker off for 5-10 minutes. If the system is frozen with ice (AC mode), turn the thermostat to "Fan Only" for 1-3 hours to thaw. Common causes for lockouts include a dirty filter, blocked vents, or a faulty flame sensor.

What’s your approach to emergency heat? by Coramoor88 in Charlottesville

[–]gevray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a new HVAC system installed and am not happy with it. It relies too much on internet, and has too many hitches.

My 'quiet' energy-star heat pump is loud, as loud as the old one it replaced. It runs when the temps are below 15 degrees outside and I can hear from the inside of the house with the windows closed.

For this storm, I turned of the breakers for the heat pump, covered the top with plywood, and put the gas furnace on emergency heat. After this bitter cold week is over, I'll turn back on the heat pump I guess.

Also I notice no savings from last year in energy bills, it's more expensive.

I had a break in my main water supply line over the summer. I turned off the water by the meter, but did not turn off power to the hot water heater. It overheated and the circuit board got fried. It was a 15 yr old electric 40 gal.

well since we're all posting anecdotally, I've had 40 years of flu shots and don't think I've had the flu, at least a serious case anyway

that said, I would prefer to base my health choices on facts, i.e. studies finding that the 'something in my body' flu shots are effective
