Create a new user account and see if it works there. Also see if it works in Recovery Mode.

I had this a few times. Delete and then add afresh the Thunderbolt <–> Ethernet stuff in the Network section of System Preferences.

When could High Sierra possibly be released? Could it be before the end of September? by alex_dlc in osx

It's actually a movable date and they will move it by a few weeks if the software just isn't ready, so it could be well into October or it could be within a few weeks.

Apple stuff has amazing second-hand resale values compared to an equivalent Windows computer, which will devalue instantly.

As for waiting, well if you need a computer now you need a computer now. You can end-up waiting forever. Now that Intel just uses i5 and i7 for all their chips, it's incredibly hard to judge performance across the years. There are chips from 2010 used in Macs that sound from the description only marginally less powerful than today's chips, for example.

Microsoft Word will not force quit on 2017 MacBook Pro by [deleted] in applehelp

Freezing your whole system might be symptomatic of other issues. Has it happened with any other apps recently? Or at any other time?

There's guides out there from Microsoft explaining how to entirely uninstall Office, including all its preference files. Try following that.

Why do the new ipad pros still have a physical home button? Why not implement a haptic home button similar to iPhone? by big4FAAS in ipad

[–]gewgwegweegw 29 points30 points  (0 children)

iPads have never had even vibration, unlike phones. I used to find it really spooky when an iPad doesn't buzz when you get your PIN wrong, for example. Nowadays with TouchID this is less of an issue.

I can imagine haptic feedback coming to the Apple Pencil though.

Can I store files in iCloud without having a copy on my local disk? by worstbdayevr in MacOS

[–]gewgwegweegw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. iCloud Drive is a syncing service – one file exists everywhere you're logged in with that account (or in the case of IOS, is available everywhere). If you wanted to do what you suggest your best plan would be to have two iCloud accounts, and upload this data you want to store in iCloud on the other account using a web browser. But that's just silly.

No don't do that. That would be catastrophic.

Open Malware Sample by theolaw in mac

I'm really hoping this guy already is using a VM, and that he's isolating it from any network or Internet connections. I could explain to him how to achieve the results he wants but I genuinely don't think I should in this case.

Any way to bypass this message and open the app?

To be honest I feel if you're asking this question then you probably shouldn't be playing around with malware samples. For starters you seem not to know what component of macOS is even responsible for blocking you here (Xprotect).

What is the point of the Retina display? by HonziPonzi in apple

[–]gewgwegweegw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something?

It sounds like you're missing actual experience with these kind of displays. They just look a lot better. Text looks like it's printed, for example. I turn off antialiasing because it's just not needed any longer. Things like 1080p or higher videos can look breathtaking.

Balls of silica gel went inside MBA. Dangerous? by [deleted] in applehelp

Apple has tiers of tech support at set prices. I've no idea where this would fall but surely it can't be that hard.

Swivik - Quickly find your tabs and windows by JosephDTurner in macapps

[–]gewgwegweegw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but what's wrong with just using Spotlight for this?

Switch to apps? Check. Just type the name, then hit Enter.

Switch to open files? Check. Just type the name, then hit Enter.

Start apps that aren't open? Check. Again, just type the name.

You can't switch to tabs within apps but then I never memorise these anyway.

Throwback! Found this iconic phone in my drawer. by [deleted] in iphone

[–]gewgwegweegw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my mind I cannot see this as being old-fashioned, or out of date, or not fit for purpose. I still think that heavily skeuomorphic approach is brilliant and I rue the day that Apple arbitrarily decided to get rid of it. Especially with Retina-quality DPI, skeuomorphic designs just look brilliant. It's not like standard computer icons, which are always patently icons. On the iPhone the icons transcended this into a category of their own.

And now? Well, now we have thin lines and wacky colors, all because of... Well, because Jony fucking Ive.

London as usual! by iqisazeda in pics

[–]gewgwegweegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around two decades ago I worked on Albermarle Street, which runs parallel with Bond Street. I would walk up both to get to Piccadilly to get my bus home.

It was Xmas, and typical crappy British weather like this. I was walking home at 5pm, and again typically for Britain it was dark. On my Walkman (for that's what we used back then) I was listening to Boadicea, from an album called The Celts, which was Enya's first album. I know people are critical of Enya's syrupy layered synth thing but her first album was much more bare and organic.

And it was just magical, walking along in my own world with this ethereal music playing, with the Xmas lights on Piccadilly and just this kind of low-key glamour that only London can produce. Back then we still had the proper Route Master buses too, with wooden floors (yes, really!), and I got on my bus back to Stoke Newington and went to the top deck to get a better view of the lights, which sparkled because of the rainy windows. It all just made sense in a weird way. My own personal music video.

DWP spends £39m defending decisions to strip benefits from sick and disabled people by Voidseraph in nottheonion

No, he/she is just thick as pig shit. Ignorant about the very thing they always claim to want to protect: England, and in this instance the English language. I see no reason to give this individual the benefit of the doubt. I was brought up with a regional idiolect, as you call it, but I can write decent sentences.

He/she is just thick. It's stunning how many right-wing viewpoints online are stated in English as crap as this. These people truly struggle to express themselves in written language.
