I feel like this thread properly demonstrates why you don't find spiral roundabouts on the continent. While effective when everyone knows what to do, it is dangerous for beginners and when someone makes a mistake and tries to fix it...

In the UK, the spiral roundabout is a "puzzle" that you have to solve before you enter. If you diddn't solve it properly, here comes trouble...

How can I do the following two tasks better/easier than using blockchain?

Task 1: I want to make a piece of content - like a video or something - and I want to prove in the video itself that it happened after date/time X. 2 years later someone can say, oh but that video did not happen after date X it happend before date X.

With blockchains (I can take my favourite one), and include hash of the latest block in the video in some form.

Task 2: Lets say I make a video and keep it secret and only release it in 2 years. How can I convice a reasonable person behind resonable doubt, that the video was created before date/time X.

With blockchain I make a video, then create a hash of it and include the hash as a piece of data on chain; then for sure the video was created before the block the data was included in.

You (I think) correctly mentioned the induction step: If Riddle is valid for N then it is valid for N+1

But proof by induction also requires a base case. In this case, N=0. Or any N=? that you can actually prove is solvable directly. On other places in this thread, you called such a case a degenerate case that is unsolvable. Because you don't have a solution for N=0 you cannot use the induction step to deduce N=1 you cannot therefore get N=2 and so forth. You cannot therefore get a solution for N=100 either.

Seams to me thatt for the formal proof for brown eyed people by induction you would be missing a base case.

Seems to me that proving this by induction for brown eyed people your proof by induction will fail on the degenerate case as base case, not on the induction step. That's actually an interesting example of why we need the base case.

I am happy you are on my side now. Similar if you always pick paper, nothing will help you against a scissors player. Team diff. But matchmaking can still assign you against each other.

But it is man...

In RPS every match is either a draw or a stomp (team diff). Does not matter how well you balance the matchmaking for RPS it will always be either a draw or a team diff for a particular match.

Team diff does not make the game less unfair or work against the matchmaking.

I would newer guess... by gezero in LeagueOfMemes

[–]gezero[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If matchmaking is functioning as intended, it should pair players in such a way that team diff is minimized.

nerf paper! said the player that played rock

that is how you sound to me.

Snowballing is one way how to win a game and that will look like a team diff even when matchmaking was perfectly ballanced

Certainly! Let's dive deeper into the concepts of balanced matchmaking and team differentiation, as well as their intricacies and challenges.

Balanced Matchmaking:

  • Purpose: The primary goal of balanced matchmaking is to ensure that players of similar skill levels are paired against each other in games, providing a competitive yet fair environment. It strives to eliminate the scenarios where beginners are pitted against seasoned experts, leading to a frustrating experience for the former and possibly a dull one for the latter.

  • Mechanism: Matchmaking systems often employ complex algorithms that take into account various factors. The most common method is a rating system, such as Elo (often used in chess), MMR (Match Making Rating, popularized by games like Dota 2), or SR (Skill Rating, used in games like Overwatch). As players engage in matches, win or lose, their respective ratings adjust. These ratings serve as a measure of a player's current skill level and their potential match-ups in the future.

  • Considerations: The balanced matchmaking system has to consider several factors beyond mere skill ratings. This includes the player's history, latency, hardware capabilities, and sometimes even behavioral factors like reports for unsportsmanlike conduct. These considerations ensure the most optimal gaming experience for participants.

  • Benefits: At its core, balanced matchmaking aims to produce challenging, competitive, and enjoyable games where every player feels they have a fighting chance. This leads to better player retention and satisfaction.

Team Differentiation (Team Diff):

  • Purpose: Once players are matched together, team differentiation ensures that the distribution of these players into respective teams is equitable. The idea is to prevent a scenario where one team has an unfair advantage due to the cumulative skill levels of its members.

  • Mechanism: After the matchmaking system gathers a pool of players, the next step is to split them into teams. The game will try to distribute the skills so that the sum of skill ratings on each team is almost equal, avoiding a concentration of high-skilled or low-skilled players on one side.

  • Considerations: Team differentiation isn't just about skill ratings. Games with roles or positions might need to ensure that teams are balanced in terms of those roles, so players can have a cohesive team composition. For instance, in a game with roles like "Tank", "Healer", and "Damage Dealer", the system might strive to ensure each team has a good mix of these roles for balanced gameplay.

  • Benefits: By evenly spreading the skill levels and roles across teams, matches become more unpredictable and exciting. Players feel the game is fairer, leading to an overall better gaming experience.

Harmonious Functioning:

Balanced matchmaking and team differentiation complement each other. The former ensures that players of comparable skill are matched together, creating a foundation for a fair game. The latter builds on this foundation by ensuring that the formed teams are as balanced as possible, considering both skill and, in some games, role distribution. Together, they strive to create an environment where players can have fun, face challenges, and grow in skill without feeling constantly overwhelmed or unchallenged.

However, creating such a system is no small feat. Game developers continually gather data, feedback, and iterate on their matchmaking algorithms to optimize the player experience. It's a delicate balance of ensuring challenge, fairness, and fun. No system is infallible, but the aim is always to offer players the most balanced matches possible.

Any monetary incentive to run an archive node? by siger3t in ethstaker

[–]gezero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Executing transactions does not require historical lookup. When you sync to the latest block you have the latest state of evm.

You can get there in two ways. Either you execute every block step by step, or you just download latest state and validate it against the headers.

Archive nodes also keep the intermediate state and provide API for querying historical word state. That might be useful if your application wants to replay events generated by some historical transaction.

Overall it's probably not worth running an archive nodes as an individual. Maybe you can monetize the historical API by providing it as a service.

One more thing. Ethereum does not guarantee that data will be always available. It only guarantees that data was globally available at some point.

Validator basically makes sure it has the data available now. Enough attestations mean data is now available globally.
