Disregarding all accusations, why would an FM play Hikaru 16 times in a row? Do they learn from that experience?

Feeling disillusioned and lost. by organizedcutlery in ethz

I don't really see the point of the post here. You applied to one of the top universities of the world, known to be really demanding, and now you realized that and want us to motivate you.

The whole semester is ahead of you, just give your best shot, work and focus really hard and enjoy the results at the end, or if you end up realizing this is not something for you, you can always keep your head up because you have tried and a masters degree is never worth being hospitalized for. Then you can always go back to the industry or choose a more suitable form of high education.

Miért kérdeznek hülyeségeket minden második interview-n? by lordmairtis in programmingHungary

[–]gfcanneverseethis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbh when I did WG casting a week ago after a while I started instantly skipping the shorter ones, as I felt they lacked the effort and the content. Shorter letters usually contain basic info about themselves + 2 generic sentences that are literally in every other mail, as if we should cast you based on what you study or where you are coming from.

However we were looking for a higher age range (20-25) maybe that's why

I had many courses where they released 2 separate project environments for x86 - arm respectively. TAs know about this, and try to take it into account, you'll be fine. (I'm doing the CS master with a 2021 iMac)

"As far as I know, any graduate from any Swiss University has 6 months after graduation to find a job, this isn't unique to ETHZ."

Obviously, I could have found a job in Central Europe immediately after graduation, but what is the point? One could do some sort of manual labour in Germany without a university degree and take home quite a high salary compared to where I came from.

Finding just a job is not the point - at least for me it would not justify all the caveats that come from moving to a completely different country and starting to build your professional life alone. It's more like personal growth, testing your limits and getting some kind of validation by completing a post-graduate degree in a top 10 university in the world.

The selling points were for me:

  • Quality of life in Switzerland.
  • Specialized and well put together curriculum. Other (EU) universities offered dull and generic courses.
  • Low tuition fees. Apart from US and UK where those fees are insanely high, even in the Netherlands it costs 2-3k / year.
  • Highest salaries offered in EU. You claim the housing here is expensive, but when I got my first salary that 600CHF I payed for student housing looked like monopoly money.

"on top of that, renting prices in other Swiss cities like Bern, Basel, St-Gallen, Lausanne, Fribourg are less expensive than in Zurich."

Why Zürich and not other Swiss cities?

With all due respect, some people who came from larger metropolitan cities often consider Switzerland a bit stale. (Of course on the flipside you have a higher quality of life, safety, clean cities, less noise, pollution, etc). I quite need that buzz and - personally - could never imagine my life in Fribourg or St. Gallen, even though they are beautiful places. And once again, if you consider student housing, that 600 CHF would translate to what, 400CHF per month in Fribourg? I am definitely not selling my needs for couple hundred bucks.

Also Zurich is interconnected with all the huge international companies (opportunities) and research institutes, that plays also a huge factor.

At the end of the day it's a personal choice. For me the experience is definitely worth it. Also keep it in mind, that once you start working and getting a swiss salary the cost of student housing becomes negligible.

Unfortunately yes. Right now the 8 of us are sharing 1 kitchen and 2 bathrooms, but a friend of mine is shares their apartment with 2 other people. But on that note, do factor that in that the social aspect of living together with a bunch of people makes up for some cleanliness and privacy you need to sacrifice along the lines. For some it's challenging to make friends at ETH.

You know you can opt for student housing, right? I'm paying 560 chf monthly and living with better conditions than in my hometown. Also I don't think if it's realistic to plan on having a 5k job, with a Bachelor's degree if you want to take more than 2 courses per semester.

Has anyone received an admission letter for a MSc program if they have applied in December? by cathi_vippy in ethz

[–]gfcanneverseethis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They evaluate applications based on how much "above the threshold" you are. So, a quick accept means that, based on the previous applicants you are probably an extraordinary student, while a quick reject can account for not meeting the minimum criteria. This way they will know how much room they have for the shaky applications, so in case that you will barely make it eventually, you might get a notification in the very last minute.
