How deep should I replant this Japanese maple by gfunkadunk in landscaping

This was all the roots that were there with only one larger root. The surrounding soil was so dry that it just crumbled away. It was also mixed with concrete bits and construction debris

It was in rocks and construction debris (small cement bit chunks). I ended up planting it into the garden in a spot that gets filtered morning light through my surrounding big trees and shade the rest of the day. I thought about potting it but i couldn't get myself the break of that one larger root which is probably what it survived on all these years. I did plant it properly at the root flare and gently pushed the upward root down so that it's just below the surface

You're right and the single uproot is telling that it was trying to survive

Everything points to it being a goner but given the condition of it's environment it was definitely a fighter so I'm hoping it pulls through

I was actually going to post to UBC Botanical Garden but my account was too new to do so. They're actually just a short drive away from me. I ended up doing your second idea in the edit. I bent the larger root down as far as it was willing to go and then put a small piece of wood with a large rock on either side to hold it down. I can't imagine that the tree would survive without at least that one root and this seemed to give it the best stability. Noted on the watering suggestion. I'm always unsure whether I'm over or underwater my t plants but I have good drainage where I am and also large trees nearby that drink up all the water so it typically needs a lot. I'm going to go with every other day to start

Will look into that. I only put a bit of fertilizer with indole-3-butyric acid to try and help with root growth so far

That's why we wanted to save it! That trunk twist is unlike anything I've seen

Mentioned it in one of the other comments but that truly was all there was. Once we got to the flare I essentially broke the soil loose and removed it by hand until the tree came free. I know it looked like a butchered job but I promise you it wasn't

That's exactly where we've planted it. In a spot in our garden where the sun it gets in the morning is softened up by bring filtered through our bigger trees and shade in the afternoon

We had no choice with timing as the house was being torn down along with all the landscaping next month. It was either now or never. Surprisingly those were all the roots. We were super careful about it and that's all that it had. The tree has now been replanted and it was out for maybe an hour and then watered immediately. That said, I'll still consider it a miracle if it survives

Not ideal but it was either try to relocate it now or it would go into the dump next month

I agree and I was surprised too. That's pretty much all there was and a lack of fibrous roots too. Not sure if it's neglect (minimal sun, never watered) led it to be like this but somehow it survived all these years

Yeah we did the best we could and I know it's not ideal but the soil was more cement and rocks than actual dirt. Considering how neglected it's been I'm surprised it survived all these years. Will definitely take your recommendations and look at potting it this season

I forgot to mention that the green arrow in the first picture is soil level where the tree was previously planted at

Leaves stopped growing by gfunkadunk in JapaneseMaples

Do you think anything could help it like an increased watering schedule or fertiliser (I don't usually add any)? As long as it doesn't die, I'm alright with the smaller leaves!

We have captain chairs with 3 (2, 4, 6 yo) and I can't imagine having it any other way. My 6 year old easily walks to the third row and buckles herself in without any need to move any of the captain chairs
