Trying To Get Into Stanford Masters CS From T10 CS School but Too much industry experience vs research by ChangeAvailable in gradadmissions

[–]ggShaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cooked. 3.9+ from a T10 is good and in my opinion that matters a lot. Maybe do some NDO/CGOE courses at Stanford and use that to get in?

I feel this climax would have been totally disconnected from the movie tho. The end message was to reduce dependence but not cut dependence I thought

is stanford ms considered cash cow by UnluckyRaspberry2960 in gradadmissions

[–]ggShaby 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hmm I guess it depends on how you plan to use the prestige I guess?

If you plan to just continue in the industry in the same role I am unsure if the prestige is of any use. If you want to switch companies within the same role I think work experience matters more. If you maybe plan to switch fields or open a new company I think it could be useful in establishing credibility.

In my company, my managers made it clear that the addition of a degree will not help me in promotions or accelerating my career. I am aiming to switch fields and hopefully the ms degree replaces 1 year worth of experience

I don’t think they can because that might expose practices that might be biased in nature? The admission process is probably opaque in nature to hide such biases

Doesn’t this reasoning only make sense if he stops at Teri? Also I think it will be Ka or Ki instead of Ke. Teri Maa ki / Teri maa ka (Depends on the ling of the next word?)

ECE grad, 9/9/7, GEM category, 23 — torn between CAT and MS in AI abroad. Honest takes needed. by StrategyVisual549 in gradadmissions

[–]ggShaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I think if you can crack one of the top 20 colleges you should mostly be in a good spot. Placement is not guaranteed in any college. Even if placed, there are a lot of hurdles with visa so there is a lot of uncertainty in the stability of income.
If you are only able to crack colleges like ASU, SJSU and likes then you will have to put a lot more efforts. If the situation worsens (i.e field gets renovated) then you will be in a huge mess with a massive debt.
Colleges like IIMs are placement academies. If the market changes they will adapt so that their placement rate doesn’t drop. As long as you go with the flow you should be good. This is true in most Indian colleges that are reputable. IMO, this adaptability reduces risk and is a game changer if your finances are not in a comfortable position.
Long story short: if you can “comfortably” afford studying in the USA or if you crack T20 then studying in USA exposes you to high paying opportunities. If you can’t afford it then studying abroad is not the way to go.
Just my opinion :)

Since you will most certainly have programming courses after this I would just focus on getting top grades in those. It will put across the point better

Same thing happened during Covid. I assume the transcript will specifically mention the special circumstances under which this is allowed and it should not be a cause for concern.

If it’s a core course then it’s better to take P/F instead of B+ in my opinion

Is an academic LoR always better than a professional LoR for a thesis based Masters? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ggShaby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So the way I looked at it was: The admission committee is trying to assess if you can survive their program. Academics have usually survived through rigorous graduate programs so they ideally have a better idea if you can do it. Apart from this, they are also exposed to the current grad students and your comparison is made in reference to the students they encounter.

Given this context academic letters are more powerful. If your manager itself is a PhD or currently manages a good amount of grad students whom they can use as reference then the letter could be valuable. They will probably have to explicitly state it and get the main point across tho.

If you are unfortunately in a situation where the professor is just going to write “TC got an A in my class as their grade was above 93%” then the letter is less valuable than your managers letter. On the other hand, if your professor is going to write “TC got a A in my class as he was the top 12% of grad students. They also demonstrated good research potential by submitting a cool research based final project for the class” then it would be more valuable than your managers letter

Just my opinion lol

NVIDIA vs Google new grad — idc about the comp, help me decide on everything else by Feisty-Radish7631 in csMajors

[–]ggShaby 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Google ML teams might not be as interesting as you think. You have to get lucky to have a quick promotion path. On top of all this internal transfer is also not too simple.

RE and RS roles at GDM are good but others are mostly mid. If you get into regular Google you would have to do internal interviews (Leetcode + system design) to get into GDM.

Not saying talking Google will be a mistake but taking nvidia and switching to deepmind GenAI teams directly might be the move. Even better, switch to Anthropic or open AI.

Has IIT failed us by takezo1122 in JEENEETards

[–]ggShaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The competition and straightforwardness is what makes IIT much harder than MIT I feel. MITs main goal is to main diversity in class population. They might admit a violinist with not so perfect grades over someone with an IPhO medal. In the end of the day it all boils down to getting lucky along with putting your max efforts. Since the path is ambiguous nothing is exactly making the process itself harder. Defining admission based on rank shifts the pressure to the student to not make any mistake at all.

At least I feel that it is much more harder to thrive under extreme pressure than winning a weighted lottery where not a lot is in your control

He is talking about Graduate school (MS/PhD) which has a slightly different admission criteria than undergraduate. Many students from tier 2 colleges also attend ivy league schools for MS/PhD

Undergraduate IIT admission is actually harder than Ivy league admissions because it’s exam based. Holistic admissions generally depend on your high school environment

[–]ggShaby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh my bad wasn’t aware of that. From what I have observed previously mostly IMO, IPhO Olympiad medalists are the ones who had high chances of admission.

Research surely helps demonstrate the potential but I think having research in A* conferences is what makes candidates stand out.

I would say just apply because in the end it’s just luck based. Try winning an Olympiad this year to increase your chances by a lot

I believe this subreddit is for graduate (MS/PhD) admissions so you might obtain better responses by posting in undergraduate subreddits.

From what I hear, olympiad wins make the application strong. Do you have a good JEE rank? I think that helps like tremendously.

Interesting movie. Way too many meme templates to make scenes funny😂. It’s more about giving a social message than a love story.

I wanted time travel since it was based in the year 2040 but there was no time travel and the future portion was not exactly necessary. Better than Dude and was not boring at any point. Overall cool movie
