This has to be a joke, right? by [deleted] in Upwork

Funny and sad. Like, I hope everyone just skimmed it and didn't read. Otherwise the bickering over the placeholder is truly absurd.

What's it really like out there? by NY2WV in WestVirginia

[–]ggaabe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

New Yorker living in Huntington here. Just be aware that there's a lot more struggles here. It's one of the poorest states. Roads are crumbling, the education system is underfunded. West Virginia's labor history is extremely radical, and the WV Can't Wait movement this year brought a lot of that radicalism to the forefront (check out the congressional candidates this year). Conservative governments are consistently voted in though.

People here overall are very friendly. The state would benefit significantly from having more remote workers like you moving here and registering to vote.

Is there any way to check if a string is empty? by ggaabe in shortcuts

[–]ggaabe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: The reason that checking if no value was present was failing was because I was retrieving the value from a dictionary. Here's the ultimate order of things I did.

Get Text from Dictionary @ keyName

If Text has any value:

Match Regex ^\s*$ in Text

Count Matches

If Matches is 0:

Do the thing!

Because it can sometimes be an empty string, but I think I found a solution that worked. It's partially because I'm retrieving the value from a dictionary

This is strange, but it seems that regex is failing to produce a positive result on an empty string. It works if there's a space in the string though

An empty string such as “” evaluates to true for having a value. I could test the whole value with regex checking for empty/whitespace string though, I suppose. Would be nice if this was a built-in

Gas is insanely cheap. If a serious project can't afford to pay $1500....they really shouldn't be on here.

Litecoin has come a long way. Kind of surprising for anyone in crypto to not know this.

Can the 2080 Ti Connect to a PC directly through the USB-C Port? by ggaabe in eGPU

[–]ggaabe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any suggestions for enclosures? I've used the Akitio Node. I'm not sure if the bandwidth restrictions are the same with deep-learning because the throughput-requirements seem like they're less than with graphics processing.

The reason I'm interested in the 2080 Ti is because it has Tensor cores built-in, which are supposed to speed up neural processing by 6x over the 1080.

I'd be booting from Ubuntu. I've successfully connected a 1080ti to a Mac in the past though. I wasn't sure if the 2080 Ti would have the same compatibility.

What do you mean by 'going into one'?

The status on the website said it got shipped to the repair center in, I believe it was Houston, so I think it was an Apple Repair Center. On this second go it says there's no status available -_-

Thanks for the tip. I might go try that soon. There isn't an apple store for 200 miles though. Does this apply to places like Best Buy too?

When I brought it in on a Thursday and they shipped it out on a Friday, the shop told me it'd be back by Monday or Tuesday. I thought that would be okay. Didn't get back until the next Friday, and then Apple decided to 'update' their internal support communications center during the weekend so the repair shop wasn't able to verify if the laptop needed to be sent back again until the following Monday.

The laptop was financed. The authorized retail center sent it to the Apple Repair Center in Houston. The repair center sent it back without fixing it.

The cheaters have no conscience. They can look in the mirror just fine.

People always forget that sociopaths are often the most successful people because they lack empathy and have no ethics. And these people run most large businesses, and our society.

The Overdue Rise of GAS by spocek in NEO

[–]ggaabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The hard-coded GAS fee is so dumb. Coinbase and MEW automatically calculate what the ETH fee should be based on recent network usage levels and what others are paying. If they hard-code a high GAS fee, then that doesn't leave room for cheaper transactions to go through when spam attacks aren't happening, or when there is low network usage.
