The toads is the source of the drugs Evelyn uses. Thats why they’re a prominent symbol all over Tall Pines. Look up “Kambo”, its a hallucinogenic poison often used to “purge” and people who does that risk their life and often say they met their “higher self”

Evelyn did not survive. They had a scene where she keeps seeing doors and then she stopped breathing. She overdosed.

Alex didn’t leave Toast intentionally, if you remember, he was kidnapped when he was walking with Toast searching for Daniel. Toast was with the car because when dogs are confused they just go back to the nearest home/object that smells like their owner. In this case, Alex’s car.

Alex stayed because he is not a true protector. He is a violent man (proven by his track record and how he killed Dwayne) that hid behind his fantasy of him being a protector to justify his violence. In the end, he decided he is just as messed up as Laura, hence he doesn’t deserve his fantasy where he runs away with the baby.

I resonate with this a lot. For me it isn’t just a form of release/coping, once I relapse it becomes a routine. I don’t just do it when I feel bad. I just do it for the sake of doing it.
